Okay, what records did you love so much that you went out and bought another copy in a different format (such as liking the CD so much you had to hear how it sounded on vinyl.) Or so much that you went out and bought the 24-bit mastered Gold Ultradisk muckity muck audiophile version, just so you enjoy THAT...MUCH...MORE!

Lord Custos 2.0 beta, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Quadruple mystery bonus points to anyone who went out and bought it on 8-track after already owning the vinyl, casette or cd version.

Lord Custos 2.0 beta, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Shellac "At Action Park" on CD. I liked the fact that they went ahead and threw a CD in with the new one on vinyl.

I have an 8 track of Captain Beefheart "Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)", which I bought just because it was weird find at a flea market.

earlnash, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This may not count - but I bought Revolver (my first ever record) and wore it out - then I replaced it - then I bought the UK release with extra tracks - then I bought the CD.

But I hardly ever listen to it anymore. (You know, after 30 years...)

Dave225, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I Heard You the First Time, by The Razorcuts - I bought the 7", followed by the 12" which, for some reason, didn't sound quite as punchy as the single...odd.

Jez, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There are certain LPs I own two copies of, just in case something happens to one (I'm not joking). The hardcore comp Let Them Eat Jellybeans springs to mind.

Lee G, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

LP, CD and cassette of every Roxy Music album, plus the box set. LP, CD and cassette of Breeders' 'Last Splash', CD replaced three times. All formats of Bowie's 'Diamond Dogs', Stones''Black and Blue', Motley Crue's 'Shout at the Devil'. Most frequent r-purchase is 'Hounds of Love', which is weird because I don't listen to it very much. Most of these re-purchases occured while drunk, and intense need to listen to certain tracks combined with impatience with looking for old copy. ("What, so buying another one is easier?" Welcome to the wonderful world of alcoholism)

dave q, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the Zombies 'Odessy and Oracle' thrice, BUT :

1) Big Beat CD with stereo + mono mixes

2) CD of Stereo version with about 15 extra tracks (singles+ sessions from before O+O)

3) As part of the Zombie Heaven box-set.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only upgraded from cassette to CD in 1997! So my upgrade list reads like my best of the early 90s.

Bally Sagoo : Bollywood Flashback

Digable Planets : Blowout Comb

Method Man : Tical

mu-ziq : Tango 'n' Vectif

er ... that's it.

phil, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We have done that already. Where are the search hounds and archivists when you need them? I bought Giant Sand's wonderful "Chore of Enchantment" on CD and vinyl. Though the vinyl version includes an extra side with a different session with some of the songs which is at least as good as the one on CD.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

lp and cd bought twice for joy div "closer", also "ziggy stardust", "diamond dogs" as well, "low", and "lodger". a friend of mine had to replace his gold copy of low after blowing lines off it. "lust for life" after i spilled beer and glitter on it (see crackly records thread), "here come the warm jets", cd rereleases of "electric warrior" and "raw power", "red medicine", duplicate nina hagen LPs as i was briefly in love

geeta, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some more in the series "absolute classic masterpieces" which have worn out on record:

Joni Mitchell-Hejira
Joni Mitchell- Blue
Joni Mitchell-The Hissing of Summer Lawns
Keith Jarrett- Sun Bear Concerts
Brian Eno-Before and After Science
Nick Drake- Five Leaves Left
Nick Drake-Pink Moon

I will definitely buy Neil Young's "Zuma" and "Harvest" on CD one day.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Strange, I was thinking about this on the train into work this morning, how I ended up with various OMD and Jean Michel Jarre LPs on CD, cassette and vinyl at the same time. Not something I've done recently, unless you count all the Sarah Records piled up in my attic on every format possible. I've been through a few different versions of "Odessy and oracle" too, oddly enough. And two different CDs of "WIlder" and "Blonde on Blonde" (the gold CD is superb...)

Ron, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i've lost count how many times i've bought loveless. i lost it at least twice in college, loaned it to a friend over a summer break and realized i couldn't go that long without it, my sister stole a copy, etc. and then of course i've given it as a gift many times over. now i own it on vinyl and two cd's -- one for home, one for my car/work. over ten years later and i'm still obsessed.

dave, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I believe NOTHING'S SHOCKING by Jane's Addiction was the first album I eventually owned on all three formats (LP, cassette, CD), followed swiftly by....er...THE WALL by Pink Floyd and SINGLES GOING STEADY by Buzzcocks.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You know. The usual suspects: Yes, Stereolab, ACR

Jeff W, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have been known to buy things a second forgetting that I already had them. Prime examples that spring to mind: Spirit of Eden - Talk Talk; Dare - The human League; Remain In Light - Talking heads. There's an element of bargain hunter's delight in these purchases. If I'm able to feel the frisson afresh of finding a copy of something then why not enjoy my forgetfulness?

Daniel, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Vinyl and CD of the bananna album. Tape dub & orig. vinyl of metal machine music. Accidentally got 2 LPs of Reed's "Rock & Roll Heart". Numerous copies of Lotion's "Nobody's Cool".

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not counting CD's that I've had to buy to replace lost/stolen/vanished copies, I haven't bought too many records more than once. The only one I can think of at the moment is Monk's Music, which I bought in both the regular CD and limited 20-bit remaster edition CD (which sounds much better and is well worth the extra expense, esp. if you're buying it for the first time).

o. nate, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Relayer- Yes [have bought it on LP, cassette, original issue CD, domestic remastered CD, and Japanese import HDCD]

Joe, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Joe is my new hero.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but Joe doesn't have the limited Wax Cylinder Edition yet, does he?

Lord Custos 2.0 beta, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can recall buying "Ziggy Stardust" 5 times (sealed early 80's copy, original pressing with inner sleeve, Japanese pressing, RCA CD, Ryko CD).

Sean, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

MBV - Loveless - LP, CD, CS

http://gygax.pitas.com, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bought the first Throwing Muses album first on cassette, then CD, then again on CD (incl. in _In a Doghouse_).
Unrest: _imperial f.f.r.r._ on CD (No. 6), again on CD (Guernica/4AD), and probably again on CD later this year when it is reissued.
His Name Is Alive: _Stars on ESP_. First on CD, then on vinyl because the vinyl version is in mono (I suppose as an homage to the Beach Boys).
Perrey and Kingsley: _Kaleidoscopic Vibrations_. First on vinyl, then on CD (incl. in _The Essential P & K_ minus 1 song), then again on CD (incl. in _The Out Sound from Way In!_). The vinyl sounds great, but the CD versions suffer from degraded master tapes (to my ears).
The Magnetic Fields: _69 Love Songs_. Bought four sets of the first pressing (gave away two). One is to remain unopened and unplayed, a la Nigel Tufnel's guitar with the tagger still on it ("Don't touch it! Don't point even!"). Also bought the UK re-release on Circus Records, just because. (Saw the live "All 69 Songs" revue three different times. I kinda sorta like the Magnetic Fields).
I am aware of the fact that I need professional help.

Ernest, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not quite the same, but I've bought James Brown's Star Time twice, after receiving a cassette version for my 17th birthday in 1992, getting it stolen the next day at school, picking up a used CD copy two years later, and finally buying it new when it turned out the 3rd disc was all scratched up to fuck and wouldn't play.

M Matos, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"don't stand me down" by dexy's midnight runners

despite seeing the horrible reading kevin in a dress fiasco, i love him and this record more than is healthy. bought it first on tape, which i play to DEATH for weeks on end, then found the vinyl, then bought the creation reissue, and am waiting for enough pennies to buy "the director's cut". i don;t care. it's a thing of absolute beauty and loveliness to sunny up your world forever. if anyone sees a copy of the original cd issue i'll have that as well please!

oh and "bryter layter" and various xtc albums on cd and vinyl...

commonswings, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

12 Hour Turn--Victory of Flight because someone gave me the cd with no cover and it was so good that I had to own int on vinyl.

Kate, Thursday, 23 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I second Don't Stand Me Down . I bought it four times. First I bought it on vinyl in college, which disappeared during several moves immediately following graduation. Then I bought a CD which I lent to my brother and he lost (!). Then I bought some weird re-issue which was supposed to have bonus tracks but, instead, quite crappily contained trincated versions of "What She's Like" and resequenced the album. (The heresey!) Mostly I listened to a home made tape copy I had made for a cross-county drive and only just last year bought a replacement CD. Hooray. It is one of my favorites ever.

I own most Primal Scream singles on vinyl and a white label "Higher Than the Sun" which I purchased specifically to hear if it sounded different on that format.

I am less proud to admit that I bought the vinyl of Second Coming by the Stone Roses in addition to the CD, but mostly to hear the John Leckie-produced track.

felicity, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You should get the Director's Cut too, felicity. The first track is ace - the missing link* between DSMD and Shut Up And Dance's "Autobiography of a Crackhead (Acoustic mix)"

*all right, the song was not exactly "missing" (or even unavailable) before, but you know what I mean...

Jeff W, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You ought to read Marcello's piece on Don't Stand Me Down. It's on his blog - the link is in the list somewhere in FT.

Dr. C, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SWEET VINDICATION after 12 years of snide Come-on-Eileen-related comments by unenlightened friends. (sometimes it is hard to be American.) I love you all.

Not yet. (YET.)
