My first single

If you skip past this Andy Gill article (already linked on NYLPM) to the end, there's a semi-amusing bit where celebs identify the first single they bought. Lots of Cliff hurrah! The Congregation! (I've got that on a K-Tel comp!)

So what was the first single YOU paid cash money for? (No "albums" please).

Or talk about the article if you like (I haven't read it yet).

I bought Lieutenant Pigeon 'Mouldy Old Dough', Slade 'Coz I Love You' and a T-Rex single together.

The T-Rex single was possibly 'Solid Gold, Easy Action'.

"Kate" by Ben Folds Five.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i only ever bought one cassingle and it was john farnham's 'chain reaction'. i can't even remember liking it back then! i think i was trying to be grown up by buying old fogey music. i will be forever jealous of my sister's first cassingle, kylie's 'what do i have to do'... she was younger and wiser.

Hot Chocolate - Girl Crazy. Still WUV it. Never was much of a singles fan though, always opted for records.

cuba libre (nathalie), Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"It's A Sin" - Pet Shop Boys.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Simon Says" by the 1910 Fruitgum Company. (Hell, I was 4!)

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...

"Earth Song".

thom, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

GETTING AWAY WITH IT - ELECTRONIC

Chris, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably "Born in the USA." I still have it. "Shut Out the Light," what a B-side. One of his best songs for sure.

Mark, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that the same Andy Gill as in guitar terrorist of Gang of Four?

First single I bought? Hmmmm. I believe I bought an LP first (Kiss' DRESSED TO KILL), but the first single was probably "We Will Rock You"/"We Are the Champions" by Queen.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aerosmith's "Walk This Way."

Curiously, I haven't bought any Aerosmith records since then.

Douglas, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it may have been "Spies Like Us", by Paul McCartney. This is probably why I can never have anything more than a love/hate attitude about him.

dleone, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tryouts For The Human Race - Sparks. Although I had been buying tapes for a while before then.

Daniel, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

True that 'Shut Out The Light' is good - but the Boss's B-sides are underrated in fact. What about 'Car Wash' or loads of others or... or... the magnificent 'Sad Eyes'???

the pinefox, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New Order - "Blue Monday (1988)". I think I still have this cassette floating around somewhere, though haven't listened to it in years.

o. nate, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sebadoh's "Willing To Wait" or perhaps Wilco's "Outtasite" or perhaps The Primitive's "Crash"

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bad by Michael Jackson.

Nick Southall, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't for the life of me remember, then again I was always mostly after albums. I think the first 12" single I bought with intent was a-ha's "The Sun Always Shines on TV" (which is arguably even more perfectly brilliant than the album mix).

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

>Kung Fu Fighting-Carl Douglas
>ABBA-Dancing Queen
>Andrea True Connection-More More More
>Queen-We Are The Champions/We Will Rock You

All in one go.What an old fogey.

IL M Snapshot: first 5 records you bought

N., Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, N.

People who mentioned singles on that thread are excused, but nobody else is! :-)

Jeff W, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I had a few Abba singles, but the first one I consciously went out to search for was Gary Numan's "Cars".

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jeff you rascal! you have almost stolen the idea of the - as yet unnamed - (paper) zine i am putting together with a clutch of ilx regulars and attendant hangers on! naughty!

(if anyone wants to contribute who i haven't spoken to yet, get in touch.)

oh, and the first single: the goonies theme song as sung by mizz cyndi lauper. good enough...foooooooooor me....gooonies are...goooooood enough... (etc.)

jess, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

roland rat "rat rapping". though mock me not when i tell you that little reggie's "great here innit" on "the cassette of the album" - the album wot it comes from - is about the best ramones parody i have ever heard. certainly the best one to mention wee....

commonswings, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Continuing the rodent theme - my first single was 'Rat Trap' by the Boomtown Rats.

Andrew L, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably "Crimson and Clover" by Tommy James or "More Today Than Yesterday" by the Spiral Staircase. I got "Sugar Sugar" off the back of a cereal box, so I guess that doesn't count.

Arthur, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The first I bought (not used) was Morning Musume's "Happy Summer Wedding."

A Nairn, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ride A White Swan by T. Rex. I am an old person.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never been a singles person. But it was "Time has Come Today" by the Chambers Brothers. I bought it after I heard the Ramones version.

Dave225, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the first 12" single I bought was "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" by Pet Shop Boys. The first CD single I bought may have been Candy Flip's "Strawberry Fields Forever" but I'm not sure.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Steve Martin - King Tut

Break It Down Again - Tears For Fears

Vinnie, Thursday, 23 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some Snoopy and the Red Barron 7", I was 4, I made my mom leave the room to listen to it. But if you're asking real music, I guess it was Soft Cell, Tainted Love, also a 7". I still have it, even though it looks like I played air hockey with it.

Kate, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Answering this will show you just how young I am... "Candy" by Iggy Pop.

Jody Beth Rosen, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

See My Baby Jive, by Wizzard & Daytona Demon - Suzi Quattro.

Jez, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I managed to work out while greenspun was down what my own first was:

"The Spirit of Radio" by Rush - the full-length version on 12", natch.

Jeff W, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

*cough*
too shy - kajagoogoo

...that took some courage (to write down)

willem, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you for the laugh, Willem (not at your expense).

kate, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Belle and Sebastian - Jonathan David

Chupa-Cabra, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ice ice baby.

Wyndham Earl, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Too Shy's great, nothing to be ashamed of there. Mine is Prince Charming by Adam and the Ants, or possibly OMD's Souvenir. Thinking about it, I had a much higher good-buy to bad-buy ratio as a youngster than more recently. I mean Roni Size, what was I thinking? My 12 year old self would have seen right through that clattery bollocks.

Mike Ratford, Saturday, 25 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Art Of Driving" by Black Box Recorder.
