The Pixies, natch.

SJ, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Samples (a jam/fratboy easy listening group rather than a hiphop or electronic act).

Would it be ageist to say that the "youth" part of Sonic Youth no longer applies?

j.lu, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, But Sonic Middle Aged sounds even more ageist.

Lord Custos 2.0 beta, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How are the Pixies ironic?

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Joy Division

Baxter Wingnut, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 22 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dave q, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Who? ...one of the most famous bands on the planet

Jez, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dr Mix and the Remix! Is their name ironic or just funny? Who cares, I have to mention them. And I actually like them too! Anyone else?

maryann, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Adverts - could any of their tunes ever be used in a commercial?

Justyn Dillingham, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not at all ironic but the fact that there is band called Anal Beard and a band called the Anal Beard Barbers has to be mentioned again.

Alex in SF, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Love - hate 'em.

Jeff W, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Pretty Things. Pink Fairies.

There are surely many dark or heavy bands with ironically cuddly names (Lemon Kittens, Skinny Puppy), but the world may still be waiting for a whispy, fey pop group that calls itself, say, "Iron Phallus".

briania, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Skinny Puppy wasn't an intentionally ironic name. The name is derived from their adopted perspective on life: that of a neglected, wounded animal, a proverbial skinny puppy. The Cure were originally the Easy Cure, and I don't really see any irony there. Milli Vanilli chose the name in homage to Scritti Politti.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Superstar Barenaked Ladies Fabolous (least, I hope he is)

Mr Swygart, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

True BNL fact: I was once looking through a book detailing how bands got their names. The entry for Barenaked Ladies: "Slang for nude women".

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dead Kennedys

Queens Of The Stone Age

Mr Swygart, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Daft Punk (and yes I know they were named after a critical slam on a previous musical project that actually might've been punk but hey)

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Guided by Voices Beer

cuba libre (nathalie), Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
