"Don't Fence Me In." Like the Ink Spots/Ella and Mills Brothers too.

Matos W.K., Friday, 7 November 2008 08:33 (seventeen years ago)

"Swinging on a Star," possibly my fave ever by Bing.

Ioannis, Friday, 7 November 2008 10:33 (seventeen years ago)

I just saw Elvis Costello and Madeline Albright sing a duet of "Don't Fence Me In" on Conan last night (?!?!?!) so it's on my mind and, thus, gets my vote.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 7 November 2008 10:52 (seventeen years ago)

Voted Don't fence me in.

Sven Hassel Schmuck, Friday, 7 November 2008 11:47 (seventeen years ago)

According to the internet, this was only the second year in which a black artist had a #1. 1943 was the first -- it was The Mills Bros' "Paper Doll."

Tyrone Quattlebaum (Hurting 2), Friday, 7 November 2008 12:16 (seventeen years ago)

"Besame Mucho". Because it's a nice song. Never heard Tommy Dorsey's version though. :)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 7 November 2008 13:03 (seventeen years ago)

Jimmy Dorsey's, I mean

Geir Hongro, Friday, 7 November 2008 13:03 (seventeen years ago)

but they're all 'nice' songs, Geir. that was the whole point in 1944.

Ioannis, Friday, 7 November 2008 13:32 (seventeen years ago)

Only eleven songs total - I'm presuming that the charts were only compiled monthly, not weekly, in those days? I think I know four of these, maybe as many as five. Mills Brothers get my vote.

I'm mystified: What possible reason would Lex have for clicking on this thread, much less replying?!

"I'll Get By" though it's the Ink Spots version I love.

dad a, Friday, 7 November 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

Wasn't Paper Doll by the Mills Brothers number one in this year?

For quite a few weeks as well I reckon?

I like how the song titles read in sequence trace the arc of a relationship.

dad a, Friday, 7 November 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

You missed off Guy Mitchell's "I'm off down the boozer"

Mark G, Friday, 7 November 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

if only it was the Spike Jones "You Always Hurt the One You Love." Kee-RUNCH!

Dr Morbius, Friday, 7 November 2008 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

Hahaha excellent, all three of you!

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 7 November 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

I have so much love for the Andrews Sisters, I need more!

skeletal lexing (Finefinemusic), Friday, 7 November 2008 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

Nope, weekly. The country and R&B charts of the '40s through the early '60s had even less turnover: there were only four (4) country No. 1s in 1961.

I'm mystified: What possible reason would Lex have for clicking on this thread, much less replying?!

(insert punchline here)

Matos W.K., Saturday, 8 November 2008 02:05 (seventeen years ago)

Sven, "Paper Doll" will be included in the 1943 poll, because I am only including songs in the year they first reached the top spot.
