sax + drums

scored a copy of real deal by david murray & milford graves today and have been luxuriating in the potent blow-out combo/potential of their chosen instruments - thinking duo exchange by rashied ali and frank lowe (poss my all-time no holds barred firebreathing free jazz alb), or brotzmann and bennink, or interstellar space by jc and ra - love the way that the relative purity of this kind of hook-up results in lots of mutual ass-kicing and general hardcore chops display

so, more of yr examples, pl

how about 'Birth and Rebirth' by Max Roach & Anthony Braxton. So many great little uses of silent space punctuating it. Srsly good. Although, this may not comply fully with the thread as Braxton uses clarinet a lot throughout this.

siskin/skulls, Friday, 7 November 2008 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

Well, that, uh, half fits the thread (xpost)

Tyrone Quattlebaum (Hurting 2), Friday, 7 November 2008 18:25 (seventeen years ago)

i think we can be pretty loose with our 'thread fits', here (murray digs out the bass clarinet for a bit of real deal)

i don't know the jones/davis alb, looks a goodun - is it an impulse alb - has it been reissued on disc, ever?

Ward Fowler, Friday, 7 November 2008 18:38 (seventeen years ago)

Great cover.

I recall only good things when I think of Frank Wright + Muhammad Ali's 'Adieu Little Man'

xyzzzz__, Friday, 7 November 2008 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

That Wright & Ali is brilliant. Way underrated, too. I generally enjoy the Murray & Graves, but having seen Graves with Charles Gayle (and heard Graves' Babi LP, which defines "energy music"), it kinda falls short. I mean, not really a fair comparison, but still.

How is this people? Opinions please:

Yeah Babi is terrific (two reed players instead of one, but still).

I've heard a cut or two of Zorn's duo with Graves and I couldn't quite get into it.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 7 November 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man, I didn't even know that Abe disc existed. He can do no wrong.

I couldn't get into the Zorn/Graves either, but I've never been much of a Zorn fan.

FTW, if you can find it.

That record's the shit. And if you hear Mateen live and up-close, your face will melt. It's totally worth it, though.

i've been digging this record a lot this year:

1977. alex foster on sax and john lewis on drums. totally cool freaky funky improv action.

Peter Brotzmann & Hamid Drake's The Dried Rat Dog is worth looking for.

If you're willing to add a piano into the mix, the Fieldwork album When Your Life Flashes, has still got that spare, bass-less energy and freedom.

Joe Maneri gets some drum action - http://www.atavistic.com/albums.php?id=468

Really up for this.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

^^like that one already

there was a piece on Mat Maneri in the Wire a while back, he's done some duos with a supposedly terrific drummer (can't remember his name), anyone heard it?

ettrick! bay area noise rock improv sax+drums

Dominique, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

Cool. Someone just sold me a used copy of a Sabir Mateen/Sunny Murray CD called We Are Not at the Opera. First track is flute and drums (lots and lots of drums) but Mateen does get his saxophone on later.
