looking through the reinforced discography online i realised i have very few of the releases. manix feel real good, and oblivion are good, the heading to the light rmx 12 is fantastic, especially the warping druggyness of the tek 9 rmx of alright wid me. nebula IIs seance/anthema isn't bad (its the lfo sampling one isn't it?), but much of the rest of the discography i don't really know

obviously one of the main labels to bridge the hardcore-jungle time period, i'm interested in this particularly, esp because alright wid me, like house crews euphoria, seems to be part of that seam of very london viby stuff that is neither hardcore or jungle, but sort of both. do you know what i mean?

gareth, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eight months pass...

I found this in LA this weekend for 12 bucks...

"Callin For Reinforcements" (Rivet LP002)

MANIX - Feel Good
SUDDEN DEF - Madness To My Method
TEK 9 - Kingdom Of Dub
4 HERO - Cookin` Up Yer Brain
R SOLUTION - Skinny Long Gitt
NICK O.D - Have You Got Any More Spam
NEBULA II - Anthema
ONE II ONE - I Want You
CODE 071 - London Sumtin
MANIX - Oblivion (Head In The Clouds)
RUFIGE CRU - Killa Muffin
4 HERO - Mr. Kirks Nightmare

Maybe I'll post on it later but if anybody wants a copy they can email me. Yeah, this stuff is revelatory. I can only imagine hearing it in 1994.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

aw why isn't the pic of hunta-d's bedroom wall showing up anymore?!

zemko (bob), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

i have the 'Enforcers' LP but have never listened to it properly. i have a couple of Manix 12's and a couple of Nookie 12s too (Give A Little love, Return Of Nookie EP) - Manix WAS 4 Hero if i remember rightly, they also recorded as Tek 9, Dollis Hill, Maximum Style and Jacob's Optical Stairway of course (tho never on Reinforced i believe)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

amnix was mark, tek 9 was dego...who, yes are 4hero

i like the definition of hardcore lp...that final track (by 4hero i think) is one of the most frightening songs i've ever heard

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I love that Tek9 LP which came out with a brilliant free CD of collected works. I bought it in Hebden Bridge. "A London Sumtin" is one of the most London-sounding records this side of "Waterloo Sunset".

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

that should be i like definition of hardcore MORE than enforcers, but then i'm a moody fellow

the whole vibe is so relentlessly, well, fucked...i remember playing tek9' "you've got to slow down" and the aforementioned 4hero track* for nancy and she just sort of looked at me cockeyed and said "people used to dance to this??" umm...

*(it's the one with screeching, vertiginous choral sample, cosmic "door slam" noise followed by the harp/guitar part and the chipmunk clip of don macclean goin "this'll be the day that I die..." does anyone know the name of this? everyone must go download it.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

tracklist!:

4 HERO - Journey From The Light
SCOTT & KEITH - Get Busy Cru
NICK-O-D - Distance (I Need You)
NOOKIE - Gonna Be Alright
PRIMARY SOURCE - Loving You
UNDERGROUND SOFTWARE - Different Ting
MANIX - Alright Wid Me
RUFIGE CRU - Terminator 2
NASTY HABITS - Dark Angel
NEBULA II - X-Plore H-Core
TEK 9 - Slow Down
4 HERO - The Elements Remix

that nebula II track sounds like daft punk gone darkcore; gareth you should def download that if you havent heard it...if you cant find it lemme know and i'll rip it to mp3

and check out this great cover:

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

SCOTT & KEITH - Get Busy Cru

is that Doc Scott and Ray Keith?

NASTY HABITS - Dark Angel

also Doc Scott right? but 'Dark Angel' was also a Rufige Kru track which is confusing

i'd like to hear this CD!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

right on both counts.

steve yr on slsk right? i'll rip it tonight (username: dubplatestyle, obv)

(it's a copy from an LP so there's a bit of vinyl crackle on the fade in/out of each track but the quality of the tracks themselves is excellent.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Rufige Kru did Angel and Dark Metal, but no Dark Angel... (they're all remixes of the same shit tho)

Ben Williams, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i have 2 nebula II 12s including that one jess yeah,

the "thatll be the day i die" sampling track i also have, but cant remember name at minute. it'll come to me...

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I just want to know why Soul Jazz or someone hasn't started compiling hardcore. Surely the day cannot be too far off...

Ben Williams, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
i just found a copy of the ARCON 2 album used for 5 bucks!!

IT STARTS ON TRACK 2!!!

is that because track 1 was so heavy it fell into a BLACK HOLE???

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 7 July 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

every single track has that effect during the drum breakdown where the drums are timestretched to the point where the sample starts to "strobe".

is this because TIME FLOWS LIKE SYRUP AT THE EDGE OF THE BLACK HOLE?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 7 July 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

o man.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 7 July 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 7 July 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

"you're caught inside binaural metamorphosis, all caught up in what producer S Gachet terms the audiomaze. beats split and launch themselves in parallel flightpaths ... at this level altered beats trigger what Method Man terms subcraziness. [dego] mcfarlane recalls 'kids coming up to you talking about The Paranormal, saying how they saw things coming out the lights and trying to grab them' ... rhythmic psychedelia activates new kinds of dermal thought, 3rd ear hearing ... the ear's powers to locate the sound in time - what audiovisual theorist michael chion terms "temporal resolving powers" - are sped up and involuted, baffling the body's perception of time ... titles [on reinforced releases] suggest breaking down standard speeds into molecular plastic, into stuff you play with, is the aural equivalent of going through the Star Gate in 2001" - more brilliant than the sun, pp 69-72

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 7 July 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

wahey!\\

thnx

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 7 July 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

i need intelligence on:

g-force & seiji - just another number LP
nucleus & paradox - esoteric funk LP
sonar circle - radius LP
alpha & omega - journey to the 9th level LP

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 7 July 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

esotetic funk = not great

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 7 July 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

well, it's pretty much just drums and echo, right? i listened to some samples and was struck by the spareness. not even any strings! also the breaks are sort of loopy, huh?

how about paradox's "musician as outsider"??

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 7 July 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

Just Another Number is kind of lacklustre too from memory though I no longer have it - a sort of awkward mid-point between the cyber-klinikalism of Reinforced c. 98 and what would later become broken beat.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 8 July 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

i had a dream last night i found a detroit techno album i'd never heard before! it was called ... ok i forget already what it was called but the cover was a photo of the moonscape with a green filter, and it was a collaboration between dego and ... someone from detroit. also several of the tracks had morgan geist co-production. i really miss finding new detroit techno.
-- vahid (vfoz...), July 8th, 2005

this needs to exist!!

-- strng hlkngtn (hm...), July 8th, 2005 2:45 PM.

ok this is almost certainly nubian mindz' "new world chaos" - the most outer detroity-edge of post-d&b pre-broken beat. pure madness. yes, it's on archive and not reinforced but he records for reinforced as alpha omega so there.

i will post some tracks from this album tomorrow, maybe.

strongo tell me more about "esoteric funk".

can i get 2nd opinions on "radius" and "journey to the 9th level"??

vahid (vahid), Monday, 11 July 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

'esoteric funk' is quintessential Paradox. i love it, it's the purest distillation of the drumfunk concept and still drips with atmosphere. these new Source Direct-ish tracks he's been doing are almost a diversion compared to this.

'musician as outsider' is even more minimal, just bare breaks, an occasional sample and hardly any bass. it can be very dry, but great from a dj standpoint. lots of insider references to funk drummers and what have you. at the time i think Bad Company were having their heyday, so this felt really cathartic.

"life without drums" = pretty classic though

i've never been a huge 'radius' fan. i find Sonar Circle's output especially clinical because it tends to sound like a mathematician trying to play rhodes or something.

'journey to the 9th level' has some great post-techstep and post-Detroit moments! my fave of all the recent artist albums. but i think his 'word of mouth' LP due later this year is going to be better still.

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Friday, 22 July 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

i just won a copy of "radius" on ebay - the seller is dev@paradoxmusic.com!!!!

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 1 September 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
dev sent me a 2nd copy of "radius" free of charge when the 1st copy i had cracked a few hours after i got it in the mail!! what a guy!!

i really really enjoy the sounds of "a mathematician trying to play rhodes".

still looking for a copy of "journey to the 9th level" ...

vahid (vahid), Monday, 5 December 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
i picked this up this weekend

the middle stretch that runs private productions (dego/mark mac alias?) / peshay / gerald + goldie / project a-ko (def dego + mark) is just ... beyond!

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:44 (twenty years ago)

in case you can't tell, the cover art features some sort of post-industrial cityscape in the background, a stretch of desert leading up the foreground, with some sort of black stone jutting out of the ground. you can't really tell, but there are big 12" speaker cones growing out of the rock, just above the word "minds" ... some sort of primitive bassbin?

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:47 (twenty years ago)

I've always wanted this despite the truly lame title.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 23:46 (twenty years ago)
