Anybody heard Every Day yet? It is wicked. Mellow jazz funk fusion, with some nice guest spots by Fontella Bass and Roots Manuva ("All things to all men" is a really heartfelt piece of rapping).

A lot of the jazz crossover stuff can be really dull, and sometimes painful in it's lameness. This isn't though. There are some great tunes on here, and even though most of the tracks are 7+ minutes, they don't outstay their welcome.

... and are they any good live?

Rick, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i have the 12" of the Fontella Bass one, which has two nice Matthew Herbert mixes. how different is the album as a whole to the last one?

also recommended: O.H.Krill 'The Krill Papers' LP which is in a similar vein (looped electronic jazz stuff) but a bit lighter and not so doomy

I don't think I've ever seen anything positive on ILM about them. I heard part of "Motion" when I was in what I quaintly call a record store, and ended up buying it (the CD, not the store). Haven't wanted to listen to it for a while, but I basically like it. There is something about it that makes me a little queasy at times, however. I liked their idea of doing acousitc remixes of electronic tracks, though I never bought that CD.

Well, this album is still pretty dark, but no harm there. But i found it to be much more cohesive than their other record proper, and is less boring than the 1998 - 2000 remix.

i thought they were pretty good live.

yeah, I got Every Day in the mail last week and it is truly a wonderful album. My favorite track has to be 'Everyday' because it reminds me of the Zero 7 song Likunafel (must be the chorus towards the middle of the song). Very melancholic indeed.

I finally got around to getting this album, and I really didn't expect it to be this good, but it is. There are so many ways that it could have slipped into being cheesy or banal or boring, but it really holds it together perfectly. Didn't expect so much live instrumentation either (I thought the "not jazzy but jazz" stuff that people were saying when this came out was kinda sketchy, but I can dig it now, definitely).

Have any of you shovers and makers heard A Man with a Camera yet? I listened to some sample clips. The cover of "Theme of the Yo-Yo" seems irrelevant. From what I heard in a brief sound clip, it was close to the original, but not nearly as energetic.

i haven't listened to "Ma Fleur" fully enough to judge it, it seems well made, of course, but i just can't get past that stunning first track.

i'm here to TESTIFY! that "to build a home" is one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard. jaw dropping.

shovers and makers

I don't know where I got this, unless it's something out of Whitman. I am curious about the new CD anyway.

The new songs on their myspace page sound kinda boring? No drums at all?

Jordan, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

it is a very very mellow album.
haven't really been in the mood for such a low lkey album recently so not really fallen for its charms yet.
