Defend the Indefensible: "Who sucked out the feeling?"

I woke up with this song in my head this morning, so I will try.

1. Actual song title is the less-awful "Sucked Out."
2. The fact that I woke up with the chorus of this song in my head indicates that some sound principles of songwriting were involved.
3. Probably blocked the creation of many future songs on the theme of "When I was in high school thought rock was transgressive and deep but now that I play in a band I realize it's just a business, maaaaaan."

This is topical, by the way, because there is apparently a new Superdrag record due in March.

akm, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 05:39 (seventeen years ago)

I like Superdrag.

Both these songs're good.

Niles Caulder, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 05:49 (seventeen years ago)

Citroens in that video, tasty

Niles Caulder, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 05:50 (seventeen years ago)

it's got the same chords as "Basket Case", "Ballad of El Goodo", and 500 million other songs (yes, the infamous Pachelbel's Canon chords).

Pantheism F. Mohair (res), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 06:16 (seventeen years ago)

i saw these guys open for big star back in 96 or so. they were ok. they gave out the destination ursa major single for free, pretty good song.

velko, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 07:00 (seventeen years ago)

i love this song and i remember waiting for mtv to play it (i think it was the same summer i waited for mtv to play "are you that somebody" (not as long a wait))

What the fuck is indefensible about this song? This is a great song!

I used to like this song.I have not heard it in years but I think I would still like it.

Pinto Basin, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

can't get down with this at all. destination ursa major is definitely better. I'm about 94.7% certain I plowed into the main dude coming out of the men's room at Spaceland a few years ago.

twss

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)

I remember a girlfriend in high school actually called the radio station and requested this song every day.

Apparently, these guys are still like The Beatles in Knoxville.

Aren't they Christian?

Anyway, nothing indefensible about the song. Everyone who clicked on it was singing it immediately. Admit it. There are worse songs that stick to your brain like peanut butter - "Lovefool," anyone?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

This song is VERY indefensible. The annoying tone in his voice when he singa "who sucked out the feelIIIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGGGG" f'rinstance.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

(x-post)

The band themselves aren't Christian, but lead singer John Davis became born-again and left the band to pursue a solo career as a more Christian-oriented musician.

I'm actually really excited to hear they have a new album coming out, they've put out some fantastic power pop.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

This has been very educational for me -- I seriously had no idea anyone remembered this song with fondness. I'm with Snrubbo on the irritating phoniness of the scream at the end of "feeling," which to me ENDS the era in which you could credibly scream out the end of your title line. But the song itself, to be fair, isn't as bad as that one syllable I objected to. I think I would be reasonably interested in hearing the orchestral album that sunk them commercially.

You peeps is crazy.

Moka, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

(i think it was the same summer i waited for mtv to play "are you that somebody" (not as long a wait))

Nah dude, it predated Aaliyah by two years.

jaymc, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

I used to associate this song with Nada Surf's "Popular" -- both alt-rock hits in the summer of 1996.

jaymc, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

I associate it with "Radiation Vibe," another contemporary, which I like about 100x more, but which I have to concede has a similiar gratuitous scream at the end of the "Shine on shine on shine on" business.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

I love how at the end of "Destination Ursa Major" the lead singer lights a cigarette off a burning map, and at the end of "Sucked Out" he uses flaming currency. That's his "thing," apparently.

I once saw Superdrag, Apples in Stereo and Tuscadero play a small bar in Milwaukee. I miss the '90s.

lindseykai, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

jesus christ that grating overly-emotive "FEEEEEELING" part of the chorus is painful and embarrassing to listen to

Pantheism F. Mohair (res), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)

man is this horrifying

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

this band has the absolute worst lyrics but big kickass riffs.... "regretfully yours", the album with "sucked out" and "ursa major" on it is super righteous; big big guitars

winston, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 01:28 (seventeen years ago)

that chorus almost seems like a parody... and the album title, i must admit, seemed remarkably apt after I purchased this album in 1996

Pantheism F. Mohair (res), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

You peeps is crazy.

He is right about the chords!

Sundar, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 02:24 (seventeen years ago)

I used to own this record. I was amazed at how blatantly derivative a lot of it was. There was a sex pistols song, a CCR song, and a few others I don't remember at the moment.

I kind of like how the lead singer dude looks sort of like Jack White's suburban cousin.

that song on a freebie compilation I got when I ordered a pizza. (Display Name), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 03:34 (seventeen years ago)

On second thought, the opening of this sounds a lot like "Mammal," by They Might Be Giants, to me.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 03:45 (seventeen years ago)

seven years pass...

Eight years later, I'll concede only that this is a terrible song that kind of SOUNDS like a great song.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 1 November 2016 18:34 (nine years ago)

The '45 minutes a side' part always reminds me of the King Of The Hill theme song, that staccato guitar part is exactly the same (possibly the same chords). No idea which came first

did we ever find out who sucked out the feeling

tylerw, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 20:11 (nine years ago)

it's like the "you're so vain" of the 90s

Who sucked out the feeling, what totally sold out, and I don't know played Derlicts of Dialect.

chr1sb3singer, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 20:21 (nine years ago)

This song came out in 1996!? Oh my god I seriously was just thinking like 2007.

chr1sb3singer, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 20:23 (nine years ago)

Dude is Xtian rock dude now (or was) which makes sense I guess

chr1sb3singer, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 20:29 (nine years ago)

Dude may still be Xtian, not sure, but he's definitely making good shoegaze w/ 1 or 2 of his ex-Superdrag mates under the name The Lees of Memory: https://theleesofmemory.bandcamp.com/

Superdrag rules. Terrible thread title.

This song by Bachelor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQihAil8-s0

doesn't really sound like Sucked Out as a whole, but the opening 4 seconds ago sounds just like the "45 seconds a side" part of that song, which, 13 years after I started this thread, has transitioned from being a song I hate for being corny to being a song I like for being corny -- middle age, I guess.
