Sour vs. slick? Cavemen vs. showmen? Etc.

Def Leppard's backing vocals are the best thing about the entire band. Absolutely classy.
AC/DC have better riffs, but Def Leppard have way better songs and harmonies.

AC/DC even HAVE backing vocals?? All I can think of is that "Oi! Oi! Oi" chant in "TNT". I've never much liked that sort of Slade/Mott/Clash-style barroom-braying-in-unison, so I'm glad that AC/DC keep that to a minimum.
Anyway, Leppard takes this one, though AC/DC would win probably every other poll between these two.

There are some relatively lush multi-tracked backing vocals on the Highway to Hell album, probably mostly provided by producer Mutt Lange.

def leppard's backing vocals are the ONLY good thing about them
phil collen and rick savage are better singers than joe elliot

okay i take back the "ONLY good thing" part, that druggie guitarist was pretty cool

oh god, no. of all the many, many terrible things about def leppard, the backing vocals are the absolute worst. so shrill, so reedy, so cheap- and nasty-sounding despite being so expensive.
similarly, for me it's those relatively lush multi-tracked backing vocals that mar 'highway to hell'.
― m the g, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:31 (seventeen years ago)
I think they sounded fantastic. Almost something Queen/10cc-like about it. Which is of course not what hard rock fans would be looking for, but for me as a pop fan, that is absolute perfection.

I like the ACDC backing vocals on shit like "Go Down" and "Dirty Deeds". Whoever's doing them sounds kind of maniacal.
