My god, he was proto-Slash. RIP.

(Er, I mean based on that picture. Not in terms of the influence of his drumming style on GnR's guitar. Although who knows?)
one of my first favorite drummers, brilliant player, I hope he had a happy life.

aw man dude was wicked
― Manchego Bay (G00blar), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:34 (seventeen years ago)
hell of a drummer -- extremely distinctive, too. those rolls of his are as much a part of the Hendrix sound as Jimi's guitar. What else did he do, other than the Experience?
― tylerw, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)
Wow, the Experience is over. RIP.
― Thus Sang Freud, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:44 (seventeen years ago)
Great drummer! RIP

Unbelievably sad.
― Sara Sara Sara, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)
wow... RIP.
The Experience must now be the first group of that era where all members have passed on...

What else did he do, other than the Experience?
Dunno about post-Jimi, but in 1964 he tried out for, and was turned down by, the Who.

RIP. He was the perfect complement to Hendrix' style.
― dad a, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 22:00 (seventeen years ago)
yeah. i know some people who think hendrix traded up with buddy miles, who maybe gave him more wallop, but mitchell's drumming on the experience albums is so wide-open, expansive. they wouldn't have that pulsating, visionary vibe without him.
― tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)
RIP. The Experience tour with Soft Machine would have been mindboggling for drumming fans.
― Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)
yes it would. sadly not much drumming from any of them any longer.
― sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)
Got to see him play once - backing up Stevie Ray Vaughn on "Voodoo Child" and was knocked out by just how tremendous of a player he was. RIP

he totally pioneered the "lead drums" style that Moon ran with - all fill no filler!

I know triplets are a part of any drummer's repertoire, but damn if that clip doesn't sound like 'Moby Dick.'
― calstars, Thursday, 13 November 2008 02:24 (seventeen years ago)
Isn't an Elvin Jones album one of the few possessions Jimi took to England the first time?

Fucking great clip. If there's a rock and roll heaven then you know they got a hell of etc.

Mitch Mitchell was one of the all-time greats. I learned how to play the drums thanks to Are You Experienced. He had such an amazing style. Like how the hi-hat would stay open 7/8ths of the time in "Hey Joe." Or how he would be playing a simple basic rock beat and then it would be time for the fill and he would just go completely crazy, hit the one square on the dot and it would be back to the basic rock beat again. And as "Third Stone From the Sun" shows, he was every bit as good at jazz as he was at rock. RIP.
― Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 13 November 2008 03:38 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, and crazy that he was basically 20 when cutting that stuff.

i hear a l'il mitch miller in Deerhoof's drummer... forget his name...
― nerve_pylon, Thursday, 13 November 2008 03:50 (seventeen years ago)
xp: er... mitch mitchell that is!
― nerve_pylon, Thursday, 13 November 2008 03:51 (seventeen years ago)
Listening to "Third Stone from the Sun" right now. Just ridiculous how he he's playing that jazz beat and then right at 4:48 he just goes nuts on the toms and snare. And then he plays those four whole notes on the tom/bass and then it's back to the jazz beat again. I tried to play this song when I was a kid. Oh Lordy how I tried.

This is odd cos Saturday night I played Axis Bold As Love out of nowhere. It's still one of my favorite albums.
Mitch is in my mind in a class of those elite British art school jazz drummers that ended up in mindblowing psychedelic pop bands that made me fall in love with music as a child. Will be replaying "If 6 Was 9" in his honor.

Aw shit man, another legend gone. I second everything Mr. Snrub said (except I don't play drums myself.)
Nothing could be more appropriate to play right now than "I Don't Live Today".

I learned to appreciate Mitch (not his birth name) watching my friend Joel imitate him on drums (or actually a couch, at the time) down to the slightest tap. So tough to do. Mitchell was an amazing funk filler, so light and agile and subtle. Those records are still astounding.
