Free Music C/D?

File sharing is a wonderful thing, but it has obscured another interesting feature of the web. In many fields, the web is enabling *amateurs* to communicate more effectively and interestingly than the professionals. Amateur writing from weblogs to discussions like I Love Music are often proving more compelling than professional media.

In music, we haven't seen the explosion in amateurism because the file sharing networks make it as easy to copy and distribute music which was intended to be released professionally. So MP3.com etc. which are phenomenally succesful in getting people to give away music are eclipsed, and still seen as a lesser option, for failures who can't get a publishing deal.

The one good thing that might come out of the clampdown and destruction of *illegal* file sharing, is a resurgence of interest in music from amateurs, shared legally.

So, just to kick off. Where is the good amateur music? What are your recommendations from MP3.com and equivalents? I'm looking here for genuinely free music, in the sense of amateurs who give the majority of their music away, even if they hope, one day, to be signed-up by a label. But NOT bands who use MP3.com to give away a taster of their already commercially released albums.

IUMA (Independent Underground Music Archive) is OK. Similar to mp3.com, it's basically a refuge for anyone that wants to post their stuff in the hopes of garnering attention and a record deal. You can buy CDs there, if the artists choose to sell something, though I'm not sure if there are people who have already released something with a label.

IUMA is free, and that's a major advantage for struggling musicians.

>Where is the good amateur music?

Well, I could always be so immodest to recommend my own music here... It's late '60s soft pop/psychedelic Beach Boys-inspired stuff. But nah, I wouldn't ever do that. :-)

Also, there's some artists on my links page who happen to fall into the category you're describing.

You should check out my brother's group, Poem-Cees.

A couple days ago, completely by accident, I Audiogalaxied an mp3 of someone with a heavy European accent (Spanish? Greek?) and a mangled voice doing the Strokes' "Hard to Explain" on acoustic guitar. It was terrible, but fascinating.

Hello! I am looking to retrieve free music c.d.'s from new musicians. My roommate is in a Detroit, Michigan band; and I directly will be giving them to the band Broadzilla. Any c.d.'s will be greatly appreciated.

Threads like this (and other discussions, like email lists and things) give me plenty to seek out and find. As I have a painfully slow and not very reliable internet connection at home, it's easier for me to buy CDs, so if I download something it's usually something I don't know.

Y'can hear some of one of my bands here: stylaga.rocks.it
