50% of these dudes are dead, btw.

'Size Of A Cow' ruined 'sound effect to match word being sung' for everyone else

Strange poll options. They released a lot more singles than this, didn't they?

A few good songs, a few more shit songs, Circlesquare ftw.

nate woolls, Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:37 (seventeen years ago)

Top 40 singles only bub.

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:42 (seventeen years ago)

I loved 'Size of a Cow' at the time :-(

baaderonixx, Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:45 (seventeen years ago)

Horrible band

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:46 (seventeen years ago)

I really like The Wonderstuff as a singles band, for my sins. Voted for On The Ropes.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

I voted "Unbearable". Because they were unbearable.

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

Horrible band

Yes. But, given all the energy I expended loathing them at the time, I can't remember very much about them at all. I know "Miles Hunt" is still synonymous with "twat" in my mind, but ... why?

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

That's pretty bleak, actually. The only thing worse than being a twat is being a forgettable twat.

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

Miles Hunt, big fat ... as the old saying goes.

Neil S, Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

What, no I Didn'ty Like You Very Much When I Met You (And Now I Like You Even Less)?

(which should really be the theme music to ILM)

Carrot Kate (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 13 November 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

Kate: That's "Unbearable" innit?

anatol_merklich, Thursday, 13 November 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

Argh! is it? I never remember the names of things! Can I change my vote, then?

Carrot Kate (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 13 November 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

Still the theme music to ILM?

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 13 November 2008 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

"Don't Let Me Down Gently". A few decent singles, really, for a hateful cockrattler and his anonymous stooges.

Good Luck, Lewis J! (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 13 November 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

EVEN MORESO.

Carrot Kate (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 13 November 2008 14:09 (seventeen years ago)

Thank god for sock puppets!

kate, Thursday, 13 November 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

'A Wish Away' was alright, most of their songs were pretty irritating though.

Didn't they have one called 'Astley In The Noose' or something?

NickB, Thursday, 13 November 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

Yes they did. But where is Miles Hunt's Best Act nomination for the 2008 MTV European Music Awards? Nowhere, that's where.

Good Luck, Lewis J! (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 13 November 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

1991 now seems to be the most embarassing year of the 90s

baaderonixx, Thursday, 13 November 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

depends what you liked at the time eh?

Thematically it's like a queer-Pipecock (blueski), Thursday, 13 November 2008 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

I'm glad that Rick's up for that award after living undercover all these years with a grebo fatwa on his head.

The British. In 1991 we had Nirvana, Anthrax, and the Puke Squad. You guys had some fruity castrated pasty face in a frilly shirt prancing around on stage.

Most of these early 90s evening session bands were not any better than britpop bands. I suppose the reason that they're not as hated is because
A) they weren't as well known.
B) some ilxors were sad enough to be into them.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 13 November 2008 15:33 (seventeen years ago)

Who is more hated than who? What were the Wonder Stuff?

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Thursday, 13 November 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

Wonderstuff,Kingmaker, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Carter USM et al. All shite and every bit as bad as the worst britpop bands.

"Size Of A Cow" has the best bong samples outside of Cypress Hill.

They really were a grotty bunch of fuckers though, weren't they?

Sven Hassel Schmuck, Thursday, 13 November 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

I'd just like to point out that at this moment in time, the most popular thread on ILx is about The Wonder Stuff.

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Thursday, 13 November 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

And you have made it more popular.

And so have I.

Sven Hassel Schmuck, Thursday, 13 November 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

we need to have a Neds vs Wonder Stuff vs Carter (bless their souls) vs Jesus Jones vs EMF poll

baaderonixx, Thursday, 13 November 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

what was the one about someone wearing a dress?

It's sad that I know the answer to this is "Welcome To The Cheap Seats".

First saw them supporting the Darling Buds in Leeds, when they only had 6 songs and performed them all twice. It was the first and last time I thought they were anything other than horrible. I knew a pile of people who loved them, unfortunately.

But if there's knocking down early 90s music press heroes to be done here, it's really not complete without mention of Wayne Hussey's solo album which may be available on major t0rr3nt sites (OK, is, because I wasn't going to pay for it). It's even worse than you could ever think it is.

straight outta Easter Compton (aldo), Thursday, 13 November 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

haha - I also discovered that Hussey thingy while googling for WS pix

baaderonixx, Thursday, 13 November 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

No. Absolutely not.

bands really did/do this?? why didn't they just stretch each track out to twice it's original length?

baaderonixx, Thursday, 13 November 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

bands really did/do this??

They definitely did that night. They may even have done "Merry-Go-Round" 3 times, because it had just come out as a single. I don't think any of the songs reached the two minute mark. Maybe "Unbearable" just about did.

I'd love to YOUESSEYE the Hussey album, really I would.

straight outta Easter Compton (aldo), Thursday, 13 November 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

Each two minute song no doubt seemed like it lasted longer though.

Pashmina, Thursday, 13 November 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

Not really, IIRC they were all verse-chorus-verse-chorus-end.

straight outta Easter Compton (aldo), Thursday, 13 November 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

Wayne Hussey looks like Ian Hislop dressed as Bono. I like the way he's holding his head like that so you can't see his wrinkly tortoise-like neck.

NickB, Thursday, 13 November 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

i don't geddit, wots with all the hate? first three wonderstuff albums are great, maybe being in the us meant he wasn't overexposed vs england.

Carter USM were an entertaining live proposition.

Live from the Witch Trials (SeekAltRoute), Thursday, 13 November 2008 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

Jesus, I had completely forgotten about these guys. I loved 'em for about 6 months. Maybe 8. It's hard to remember a time when we thought we needed a band that was exactly at the three-way crossroads between the Smiths, the Waterboys, and the Bay City Rollers, innit?

V. sorry I killed Jimmy Carl Black (the Indian of the group) (staggerlee), Friday, 14 November 2008 00:20 (seventeen years ago)

― burt_stanton, Thursday, November 13, 2008 7:45 AM

I've been thinking about this one. For the past 15+ years rock radio (here in Canada, anyway) has been stuck in some very deep post-grunge mud, and lemme tellya, if I had the choice between the bunch of grade-10-girl-angst-poetry-spoutin', cock-rock-guitar-wieldin', tattoo-and-goatee-sportin' hitmakers of today (as influenced by ... the puke squad?) or a bunch of fruity castrated pasty faces in frilly shirts with melodies and lefthanded lyrics and accordions, I'd probably choose the latter.

I wonder if the spleen directed the way of the Wonder Stuff would be nearly so bilious if they hadn't been huge in the UK. The music in and of itself isn't that bad - it's mostly the singer's unbearable poncing.

Loved The Wonder Stuff in the '90s. Cannot stand the music now. Apart from parts of Construction for the Modern Idiot, which was far less novelty-fecker and far more an attempt to just do some music, but comes off sounding a bit like Boom Crash Opera in places.
