Definitely Mavis Staples!!!! Oh my god, some of the live stuff with just her and Pops and her sisters is just spine-tinglingly amazing.

Nice choice Chaki - almost makes up for your love of Oingo Boingo ;P

Actually, he's the only one I was serious about, Dan! I don't know, he sounds so sexy on "Amos Moses". So, yeah, him. And Randy Travis, believe it or not. And Al Green. And Mitch Ryder.

Ronnie Spector - same BUT I have to say have you heard her version of 'Silhouettes' where at the end she does this voiceover in a 'throaty' style like: 'You and me baby, silhouettes, yeah, come on baby, against the shades' - it is so silly.

I just read in the paper that in some BBC poll sexiest voices were: Sean Connery, Joanna Lumley, Honor Blackman. And that made me crack up because I saw Blackman on Graham Norton for the first time just before I read that - haven't seen any of her movies - and when she opened her mouth and talked, it made me laugh! It was like there was a dragon roaring inside her!

But anyway, at least no-one chose Melanie Griffith.

I think Iggy Pop's voice is kind of sexy - but I hate to say that. It's not like I would want to have sex with him. I suppose I find anyone sarcastic kind of sexy. I was thinking about that yesterday, it's like I can't identify with someone who isn't disgruntled.

Bo Diddley's laugh is really cool. It's goofy but so warm, that's pretty sexy I suppose. Who else laughs a lot on their records?

Wanda Jackson - I mean that's pretty corny and obvious, but still, she really sounds like she's going crazy on 'Fujiyama Mama'! Maybe she was just on speed.

And getting even more corny, Elvis, on 'I've been stung' and things like that. That whole fifties sexy style. Hey! I saw Fonzie SINGING on Happy Days last night and it was actually him - like he was a 'bad singer' - and it was great! His voice sounded like it was breaking, and he was really screaming. Did anyone else see that?

Yeah but Wanda Jackson - doesn't she sing, 'I never kissed a black, I never kissed a gook, but I can shake a --- in the middle of the room' and 'I've been to Nagasaki - Hiroshima too - the same thing I did to them baby, I can do to you' - in a SQUEAL?

I guess Toya is pretty sexy, 'come on shorty if you think you can roll ...' etc. And least sexiest recently, not counting Blue, is that fucking stupid thing 'oops, there goes my shirt, up over my head.' Why on earth would anyone think that is what anything is really like ever?

maryann, Friday, 24 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought it was "I never kissed a bear, never kissed a goon, but I can shake a chickin in the middle of the room."? Great choice, though, the cornier the better for me.

minna, Sunday, 26 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Harriet Wheeler of the Sundays, periodically. She occasionally sounds like a prim, twee schoolgirl, but is also capable of reaching that point where even the Rollins-est of hearts would melt - cf: "My Finest Hour", "Love" and that bit in "I Feel" when the chorus starts.

Also Dusty's version of "If You Go Away".

Darren, Sunday, 26 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay for Wanda Jackson!

Rachael Nagy from the Detroit Cobras 'does it for me' too.
