the real way to do this is have everyone vote off one track, then do another poll minus that track, and so on

sofa king (deej), Friday, 14 November 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

i arbitrarily voted halftime

sofa king (deej), Friday, 14 November 2008 22:33 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i'm actually thinking of boycotting the poll myself because it's too hard

I know this is some corny shit to say, but "Illmatic" is one of the few albums I can't listen to individual tracks from. If I wanna listen to it, I need to put 42 minutes to one side to do it.

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Friday, 14 November 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

what is your favorite 3-5 minute section of that 42 minutes of great music then? ;)

Best rap album ever.

Life's a Bitch.

ablaeser, Saturday, 15 November 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

this is one of those albums that is so praised you wanna challops and say it's not all that but you look at the tracklisting again and it's just like...holy fuck i can't believe this album ever happened.

any major some dude will tell you (M@tt He1ges0n), Saturday, 15 November 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)

i don't know if anything this awesome could exist now.

any major some dude will tell you (M@tt He1ges0n), Saturday, 15 November 2008 02:19 (seventeen years ago)

i hope something this good happens again!

anyway, choosing one of these is like choosing my favorite child, but I'll go with "it aint hard to tell" because it's been my ringtone since high school

Kevin Keller, Saturday, 15 November 2008 03:07 (seventeen years ago)

No Genesis no credibility.

Moka, Saturday, 15 November 2008 08:37 (seventeen years ago)

Even though the whole alb is incredible and all that, this is so obv NYSoM

and somewhat dude (The Reverend), Saturday, 15 November 2008 09:28 (seventeen years ago)

memory lane. but the only song i really listen to on its own outside of the album that regularly is it aint hard to tell.

they really messed up the chance to do a good double-disc version of this by leaving off the remixes.

titchyschneiderMk2, Saturday, 15 November 2008 10:21 (seventeen years ago)

'Halftime' although it could easily have been 'One Love' or 'It Ain't Hard To Tell' on a different day.

Gavin in Leeds, Saturday, 15 November 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

NYSOM

Neil S, Saturday, 15 November 2008 11:46 (seventeen years ago)

Meant to vote "New York", assumed "Genesis" would be at the top of the list and ended up voting for "Life's a Bitch". But "NY" is the best track, great and perfect as the album is. It feels kinda different to the rest of the alb, I'd love a record of tracks like it.

Oreo SB'd Wagon (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 15 November 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

I love NYSOM but if I put it on I have to hear the whole record. There were a few months in high school where I was taking the bus to school in another town and my copy of Illmatic skipped crazy bad except for "Memory Lane," so I'd just listen to it over and over, and it's the only one I can hear in isolation from the others.

it's so perfect. AZ's a pretty talented dude himself, but imagine if you're him, trying to convince people that you can do something half as good as that verse. it's one of the best verses in all of rap as far as I'm concerned.
