Keith Hudson - Old Fashion Way /The Hudson Affair, etc THERE IS NO GENERAL PURPOSE KEITH HUDSON THREAD HERE

This song "Old Fashion Way" has suddenly become my fave song in the world right now. I thought we had a general Keith Hudson thread but there isn't one that I can find.

What I love about this song is that it's so upbeat and happy, musically, but the words and vocals could make me cry. In fact, I almost cried today at the gym. It's such a sad song!!! And yet you can dance to it! I love it.

Yeah, I saw those. What's your point?

Your Head Is Full of Diamonds & Lice (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Saturday, 15 November 2008 08:18 (sixteen years ago)

those are general keith hudson threads, despite their titles. also u r still more goth than me

eman, Saturday, 15 November 2008 09:00 (sixteen years ago)

bimble, calm the fuck down

jaxon, Saturday, 15 November 2008 19:20 (sixteen years ago)

The thread titles mention specific releases. Therefore, they are not "general". We can sit here all day and call a rabbit a dog, but a rabbit is still not a dog.

I wanted to post about this song. Which one of those "general" threads would have been most appropriate for me to post on about this song?

ya i wasn't saying 'don't make this thread', just pointing out that those other threads despite their titles diverge into general discussion if you read them.

the hudson affair is one of his that i still haven't heard

eman, Sunday, 16 November 2008 23:12 (sixteen years ago)

I've fallen in love with Keith Hudson's "Pick A Dub" - further listening suggestions?

^^ LOL ... this thread gets about five posts in before someone links a mess of old threads

"the hudson affair is one of his that i still haven't heard"

The Hudson Affair is just the expanded Keith Hudson & Friends, right?

Alex in SF, Monday, 17 November 2008 01:28 (sixteen years ago)

eman, Monday, 17 November 2008 05:31 (sixteen years ago)

So like um...*politely raising his hand* no one has anyting (mispelling intentional) to say about this one little tiny song "Old Fashion Way"? Ah, hell...I've failed. This whole thread has failed. Fuck it.

I'll do a search for this song on the other threads later. Can't be arsed at the moment.

it's a Ken Boothe song, no?

Granny Dainger, Monday, 17 November 2008 14:23 (sixteen years ago)

ken boothe sings yes. was the first Keith Hudson produced track when KH was only 16? i know he was young. i too love this song and i also love Dynamic Fashion with the classic spoken intro "Studio kinda real cloudy as i would say". I love a bunch of his stuff but Blood Eyes / My Eyes Are Red has been the song i've been going back to recently.

That 2 CD Keith Hudson and Friends reissue is wonderful. Essential reggae selection for your collection, as i would say!

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 17 November 2008 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

My Eyes Are Red is my favorite KH tune, and the album From One Extreme to Another is full of similar productions.

Granny Dainger, Monday, 17 November 2008 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

is this it

eman, Monday, 17 November 2008 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

yes, that's it. not too much info about KH on the internet but this site has a couple good stories: http://www.firecorner.com/magazine/hudson/

Old Fashion Way the second song on this mix linked to on one of those other threads:

I like it, "hook line and sinker".

Jamie T Smith, Monday, 17 November 2008 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

And it goes straight into Dynamic Fashion, as discussed above.

ten months pass...

Keith Hudson is my favorite figure in Jamaican music history. Thought you all should know.

two months pass...

He may be mine, too. Every thing I come across by him is, if not outright fanstastic, at least filled with interesting textures and lil bits of goodness. I'd never even heard of Torch of Freedom until the other day when I thought "hm wonder if there's some Hudson stuff out there I've overlooked." It's great!

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Friday, 4 December 2009 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

Not really familiar with him as a vocalist, but love his dubbed work, e.g., Pick A Dub.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 4 December 2009 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

His vocals are an acquired taste, but the music is good enough to make up for it. I'd recommend checking out Nuh Skin Up, which is all dubs.

Brand is probably my favorite Hudson record.

I'll put you all on the guest list for my festival

In heaven.

Got it; love it. Maybe more than Pick-A-Dub.

just heard Steaming Jungle for the first time. Man, this needs a reissue BAD. What a great record

Wimmels, Sunday, 6 November 2016 19:51 (eight years ago)

seven years pass...

i was just about to post to ask if anyone has any thoughts on Steaming Jungle. It and his debut are the only ones i have still to hear. Wimmelsm, can you tell me more?

As an aside, while not his very best album, I have been caning Rasta Communication all this year and it is so good. What a mood. Side 1 in particular is just perfect.

stirmonster, Saturday, 28 September 2024 21:24 (seven months ago)

i found the RC reissue cd a few months ago in a charity shop, (tis very rare to find any decent reggae cds in charity shops in the uk), and had forgotten about it.
so ta for the nudge.
will dig it out and give it some love this week.

mark e, Saturday, 28 September 2024 21:35 (seven months ago)

Keith did no wrong and Pick a Dub is his high mark. Playing it Cool is closer (chronologically) to Steaming Jungle and maybe more in line. But again, perfect artist and everything is a must.

avoid boring people, Sunday, 29 September 2024 00:37 (seven months ago)

Thanks. Playing it Cool is my favourite closely folllowed by Flesh Of My Skin Blood Of My Blood. Pick a Dub is all time great but I think I'd actually prefer it if it featured his voice.

thank you

This looks fabulous!

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Friday, 2 May 2025 16:16 (four days ago)

loving the pedal steel on "musicology" is great -- there should be more in reggae

budo jeru, Friday, 2 May 2025 16:20 (four days ago)

it's on other tracks on Rasta Communication (and probably its preceding dub Brand too, though I can't remember), but I haven't ever noticed it on any other reggae songs, sadly

rob, Friday, 2 May 2025 17:06 (four days ago)

There's this eccentric tune by Hawick's own Champion Doug Veitch, a Mad Professor production. As far as I'm aware the steel didn't make it onto any of the Mad Professor's dub LPs, though Doug's yodels can be heard of Dub Me Crazy vol 5 IIRC.

(There's a dub, Guilt Edged, on the b-side, but I can't find it on the internet)
