It's easier to hear things than say them. So a lot of things don't sound very tongue-twisting but probably are. The only thing I've ever tried to rap (cf karaoke thread) is "The Real Slim Shady" which was fucking difficult. The half-rhymes he puts in - "furniture" / "return of the" - really threw me. I'm pretty sure all rap would be really difficult though. Except maybe DMX.

it's impossible to sing along with any das efx song. and, although they suck, ditto for bone thugs n harmony.

Check out Sir Mallick (i think that's his name) on Dr. Octagon's 'Biology 101' (it's on Ecologyst - album of the year 1996). Sounds if he's reading alound and really fast from a biology textbook. Which of course is very cool.

it's 'sir menelik'.

Go here. Listen to "Sha Sha" on the audio page. Marvel.

Thanks Ethan, I must have been thinking of Mr.Mallick (or Mr. Maleek), not the ace director but someone who gets name-checked on Warren G's 1st album, yes?

Omar, Friday, 20 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

well, malik is a very common hiphop artist name already, it's the government name of phife ('by the way my name's malik, the five-foot freak/ let's say we get together by the end of the week') and malik b. from the roots (duh). i believe it's islamic in origin. i remember a while back there being a basketball player named malik sealy as well. never heard the warren g. album though.

I always thought Snow was singing "a leaky bum bum now"...sorry :)! Also, I heard Shaggy do a slow version of the "It Wasn't Me" rap...and I still didn't get a word of it...I'm lame!

james edmund L, Friday, 20 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

most DISAPPOINTING line in rap?: When I first heard it, I tht Shaggy was singing "if seeing is believing then you better change your sex", a mindfuck non-sequitur of titanic proportions/implications etc (it's "specs", which is hohum indeed).

All that tickety-tickety tongue-twisting shit don't impress me.

Everyone should read Dr Seuss -'FOX IN SOCKS'

damn you greg, i was going to use that beatnuts quote in my positive k review. ack.

ethan, Friday, 20 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

art of origin's _un-ration-al_. chino XL before he went solo does some of the most ridiculous post DAS-EFX shit i've ever heard, with lines like "straight from the fires of hell/in the bottomless pit i spit hate from my tongue/i'm throwin' that ass out the window like eric clapton's son" delivered in double or quadruple time. unfortunately i don't think it ever received a proper release... but i've seen it used a number of times.

massive attack - daydreaming - best rap ever

ivan mandic, Friday, 10 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I deleted a post and some stray attendant 'wtf?' posts at Tracer's request. It was an old post, sorry I didn't notice it before or I would've deleted it right away. Though it could've been a lyrical reference, it directly referred to an ILM poster in an obscene manner.

It was an old post, before I made a later gripe to the poster about posting abusive and pointless things on ILM. (Not doompatrol/paul related, I'll note.) I appreciate that that poster (who knows who he is) seems to have stopped, though, so consider this just some spring (er summer) cleaning.

Thanks Josh.

Tho now I need to repost the first part of my complaint: Massive Attack can't rap for shit.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i think tricky sounds okay.

ethan, Saturday, 11 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

can the nu-Wild Bunch crew be credited with bringing what cd be called "cabaret style" rap? i like their breathiness and low-key urgency, i just don't think they do it very well.

I'm suprised no one mentioned this classic line:

Dead in the middle of Little Italy, little did we know
that we riddled some middleman who didn't do diddily.

Though I guess it sounds more tongue-twisting when Pun says it than written down like that.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 11:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I was always impressed with the way Ice Cube phrased "...you should hear how she sounds with a cock in her / boots get knocked from here to Czechoslovakia."
