The Kinks Pye Albums Box Set (10 CDs) : POLL

So, no "People take POLLage of each other" amusing title, just a straight question:

Because, I got one of these, kicked off with "Village Green" and find it is the 'rare' 12 track version, to represent the italian version/sleeve. Yep, you can get this set for £30 or so, a bargain in anyone's eyes, and there is controversy about "hey, this is in mono, dammit" or "Hooray, it's the rare mono mix" and so on...

So, which/what/how?

I like Something Else da bestest.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 November 2008 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

I prefer "Something Else". It has "Waterloo Sunset", their best ever moment, and also a lot of amazing album tracks.

AFTERNOON TEA

Fox Force Five Punchline (sexyDancer), Monday, 17 November 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, that is one of the other main reasons why I went for "Something Else".

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 01:40 (seventeen years ago)

Is the 12 track village green the one sans "Big Sky" "Last of The..." "Sitting By The Riverside" That's the bonus set on the single disc reissue. Not as good in that arrangement.

Me too. Something else.

Just done "Something Else", it's OK. "HarryRag", "two sisters", "Waterloo Sunset" and "Afternoon Tea" particularly with the lines about Madonna, which seem to make more sense now than then!

I dunno, both albums so far 'have their moments' but nothing is saying "this album is great!"

Where to go next?

Arthur Arthur Arthur!

Manchego Bay (G00blar), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

Live at Kelvin Hall is easily their most underrated, and everybody's gonna be voting for the usual choices, so I'll be different and vote for that one. Love it love it love it.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 17:43 (seventeen years ago)

Arthur then.

Hmm, interesting...

I went for "Live at Kelvin Hall" next rather than Arthur (which will be the next one)..

basically, crowd goes apeshit like it was the beatles, while a band plays pop hits and gentle blues like they weren't there.

Best bit: Getting the crowd to sing along about having "a big black momma"...

Mark G, Monday, 24 November 2008 09:46 (seventeen years ago)

Kicked off "Arthur" today.

First track up, "Victoria", always loved this one, way before the Fall's version, bought in a jumble sale in 1974 or so.

This could be the one...

Mark G, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

.. and so it is!

This one seems way better than all the rest (so far), assuming that "Lola vs" doesn't emerge as a forgotten classic when I sticks it on.

I saw a 'sessionography' wheich seems to suggest that this was the first album to be created 'at the time' as a unified whole. ("Village green" off "Village Green Pres" was recorded in 1966, about 3 years prev to the last track off it, which is a long time in 60's beat history)

It does seem, however, that the 12 track PresSoc version is woefully wrong: "Days" a single, wonderful as it is, and at least two? other tracks would be dropped and many other tracks added to make it what it should be. Guess I'm going to have to shell out for that 'deluxe' edition then.

Still, "Arthur" seems the one that makes sense when described as a 'britpop source', it has horn sections tightly controlled, and songs that unravel smartly. This is the classic one, I reckons.

Moved onto "Face to Face", and that's damn good too! Much more 'in the room' than the others I've played so far.

one month passes...

Hello this thread.

So, went back to Village Green, and it sounded way better the second time.

"Percy" was a bit of a surprise, lots of instrumental tracks by the band (The "Lola" instrumental is groovy, and is not just the single's backing track), and a bunch of great songs with orchestral backings of the sympathetic kind.

Right, now I'm starting into the early albums. "Kinks" was OK but I have the original Pye album so know it already. "Kink Kontroversy" is up now, and it's OK in a sort of "blues/beatles" style ...

But, albums were expensive things in those days, did people really have the money for two albums a year of "more of the same"? No they did not.

Been a lot of kinks threadage lately.

Still, this box was cunning, in having a 'short' version of Village Green in it, so you'd have to get the 3CD edition to be fair to it.

hey, I'm wasted on you guys!

No votes for Face to Face, no credibility

sonofstan, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 17:30 (sixteen years ago)

Oy vey, Village Green is so overrated! Nice to see Something Else get love but Face To Face, Kontroversy, Kinda, Lola Vs. Moneygoround, and Arthur are all much better records than Village Green in my humble opinion.

I see the first three albums will get the deluxe treatment this spring. Hopefully, "Face To Face" and "Something Else" (including the stereo mixes) will follow.

eight years pass...

I just got an original "Something Else" for £20, the sleeve has been mucked about but the stereo LP inside is fine.

Just played it again, side 1 is OK but side 2 has some interesting things!

A bit of a shame that it's the final charting LP in the UK, bar "Greatest Hits" collections.
