dubmill, Monday, 17 November 2008 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

Hard to beat "Life On Mars" here.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 01:39 (seventeen years ago)

lotsa great songs - but "i saw the light" wins.

nonightsweats, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 06:36 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Todd Rundgren - I Saw The Light

Lasers of the New School (PappaWheelie V), Tuesday, 18 November 2008 06:50 (seventeen years ago)

My shortlist: Life On Mars, Live And Let Die, Honaloochie Boogie, Touch Me In The Morning, I Saw The Light. Has to be Todd, though.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

Hellova great chart list though!

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 11:29 (seventeen years ago)

Agree. Without wishing to sound like an old get, how many of this week's chart will be this memorable 35 years on, even to one of a more impressionable age than me?

Went for Life on Mars. Second place a tie between Suzi Quattro and Free.

Sven Hassel Schmuck, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 11:46 (seventeen years ago)

You sound like an old get.

Manchego Bay (G00blar), Tuesday, 18 November 2008 11:47 (seventeen years ago)

Nice chart, with a Stroke's dad at number 28 too! Went for Free.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

The complete absence of props for "Finders Keepers" is distressing.

CHAIRMEN:

William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 12:30 (seventeen years ago)

Kinda long after the fact for "Life On Mars" to have been a single, wasn't it? I've only heard barely half of these...the very idea of a band actually covering "Snoopy vs. The Red Baron" and having an actual hit with it, blows my mind.

My choice: "Pillow Talk"

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

Between Clifford T, Todd R & Mott The H for me. As I'm feeling slightly melancholic today, we'll go with Gaye. A tray of nice things I upset.

harveyw, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

why is albatross on the charts in 73?

creator of 2008's most successful meme (velko), Tuesday, 18 November 2008 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

And why is "All Right Now"? Didn't that come out in 1970?

Voting for Mott.

Sara Sara Sara, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

and WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK WITH THAT FUCKING GARY GLITTER AD? THAT SHIT'S CREEPING ME OUT.

Sara Sara Sara, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

no King Harvest - Dancing In The Moonlight included :-(

Lasers of the New School (PappaWheelie V), Tuesday, 18 November 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

The bonus re: "Life On Mars?" was that it was b/w "The Man Who Sold The World". I think this is the first single I ever bought (although in my memory -- and I can't confirm this online anywhere -- the bizarre "Laughing Gnome" was also on the B-side). Anyway, voted for it, but what a lot of good stuff that year!

And this: WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK WITH THAT FUCKING GARY GLITTER AD? THAT SHIT'S CREEPING ME OUT.

Anyone?

Lostandfound, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

Well, Gary Glitter was fairly famously old for a pop star by the standards of those days (pushing 30 in 1973). The offer cut-off age was 23.

dubmill, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

And the ad in question is from the 1980s...

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

1. David Bowie - Life On Mars
2. Elton John - Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting
3. Todd Rundgren - I Saw The Light

Yes, but reverse 2 & 3 !!

billstevejim, Thursday, 20 November 2008 02:09 (seventeen years ago)

Also Hunky Dory was released in '71.. wtf.

billstevejim, Thursday, 20 November 2008 02:10 (seventeen years ago)

Were any charting singles in 1973 actually from that year?

billstevejim, Thursday, 20 November 2008 02:11 (seventeen years ago)

Well, Gary Glitter was fairly famously old for a pop star by the standards of those days (pushing 30 in 1973). The offer cut-off age was 23.

I know...it's the fact that he's a known/convicted pedophile that raises the WTF?! factor for that ad (but yeah, he wasn't a convicted pedophile at the time of the ad).

Sara Sara Sara, Thursday, 20 November 2008 03:31 (seventeen years ago)

Life On Mars

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 20 November 2008 04:27 (seventeen years ago)

I Saw the Light >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anything else on here

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 20 November 2008 04:36 (seventeen years ago)

I'd never heard Todd Rundgren before, but I've just heard that tune and it's smashing. I'd've gone for that had I known. Should I check out his other stuff now?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 23 November 2008 11:10 (seventeen years ago)

Junior Campbell's "Sweet Illusion" is a total banger, by the way.

Ismael, you should definitely hear Something/Anything?, the album "I Saw the Light" is from.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:28 (seventeen years ago)

On reflection I'd still probably have gone for Free, but thanks for the tip, I shall check it out

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)
