Isn't it amazing how hip-hop has got indian music. Is it just Timbland or does this mean they're all at it? I recently discovered Petey Pablo's Raise Up with another great bit of indian / bhangra theft? And Oochy Wally?

What I love about the use of Indian/Middle Eastern music on "Addictive" (see also: Foxy Brown's "Hood Scriptures") is how it steals not just from the specific sonics of the source, but also its fundamental performative alienness - the shivery drone of the sampled sigh and incomprehensible catewauling (at least from a Western perspective) are actually much more compelling in the service of POP than the by now familiar banghra riddims and flutes.
Plus, TRUTH HURTS! Did she listen to Latrelle's "Dirty Girl (Remix)" and love it as much as I did, or is this just a pure co- incidence, a separately concocted revival of trashy pop-soul?

What appeals to me more is how *natural* it sounds - the slow- mo backing achieves a sort of reflected swagger (ricocheting off Truth Hurts' performance) that reminds me of that sultry trumpet on TLC's "Creep", although clearly it's very different. It doesn't sound at all like a revolutionary single, but a confident, sexy record, which is why I like it. In comparison all of the big recent Timba singles - with the notable exception of "Oops (Oh My)" - sound a bit too self-consciously like "the future"; "Addictive" is what happens when the future actually arrives and everybody gets used to it (or: it's clear that Destiny's Child singing about pagers is cool but *not* sci-fi. This is the same, musically). Truth Hurts herself isn't as good as Latrelle is on the Dirty Girl Remix, but I like the idea that the vocal/performance approach Blu Cantrell, Latrelle and Tweet have hatched up between them (reclaiming "soulfulness" from the purist bores in the service of pop and adding some trashy spice, or maybe dareisayit obviousness) is catching on. The problem with this approach: it only works with da pop production, and is harder to distinguish when there's actually "soulful" backing/ content (see Cantrelle's ballads). Maybe this new quasi- movement is purely contextual (this is why Tweet going almost totally acoustic on her ballads is classic: she neatly sidesteps the pitfalls... or rather, jumps over them to the other side). How Truth Hurts deals with it remains to be seen, obv.

Anyway, I didn't get any definitive information for my review, so I just called the thing a Bollywood sample. Someone at Interscope told me that he'd heard a rumor that DJ Quik got the sample off a TV show, which means that Quik himself might not have known who did it. I decided not to try to track him down; I thought it might be kind of insulting to ask him about Truth Hurts when his own album is coming out.
I'm confused by all the references to bhangra, since not only isn't this track bhangra, I don't think that "Raise Up" or "Get Ur Freak On" are either, though I wouldn't know. Or is "bhangra" becoming the general word for something that mixes any Indian music into western dance pop? For practical purposes the sitar - if that's what it is - on "Get Ur Freak On" might as well be a guitar; it's used just like an r&b/rock riff, like Hubert Sumlin's on "Smokestack Lightning" or James Burton's on "Susie Q".

The UK folks could help me here -- first I heard the term was about nine years back thanks to Melody Maker, of all things, with a couple of cool articles discussing what sounded like a thriving Anglo-Indian dance/pop scene. My sense of the context was that 'bhangra' had somehow evolved into a catch-all term to describe the resultant fusions. Perhaps this is very wrong? Anyone? I still have a few discs from acts and labels featured in that article that came out in America due to a licensing deal -- some of them are great listens still.

i feel quite proud of the fact that all the indian beats are becoming extremely mainstream now, its fun and it's about time, but if it's over exposed, it'll get real old real fast. as for bhangra, it is a very ambigous term now, but it's rudimentary aspect is the dance beat.
ok jus felt like voicin an opinion -

The name of the morning show is called The Mad Hatta Morning show and they were talking about the new controversy that is surrounding Truth Hurt's "Addictive" song. And the controversy has to do with the background beat of the desi lyrics "kithna sona hai, etc. etc."
Personally speaking, the song took a long time for it to grow on me because the desi lyrics didn't seem to mesh in well with the English lyrics, but I digress.
The desi lyrics in the song are from a song by Lata Mangashker (having the DJ's trying to pronounce that name was a trip in itself) and the rights to Lata Mangashkar and her songs are all owned by an Indian company by the name of Samajal or Samagal. Anyways, one of their representatives was in the US and heard the song "Addictive" and noticed the desi lyrics and suspected they were Lata Mangeshkar's. So, he looked up the song which he thought it was, and lo and behold, it was Lata Mangeshkar's song "Kaliyon Ka Chaman" (as stated earlier).
So this representative fella somehow "out of the blue" called up a lawyer in Houston and asked to help him sue Dr. Dre, DJ Quick and Truth Hurts, which she (the lawyer) is now doing. How the lawyer chose her, I have no clue and the lawyer wouldn't provide any more information regarding the method of contact on air. Funny thing is that the lawyer is a self-proclaimed fan of Dr. Dre and DJ Quick but said after hearing Lata's song, DJ Quick had completely ripped off the Lata song and only sped up the track. Usually when DJ's sample music, they change it around so its not exactly the same way it was in its original form (according to the lawyer). And, yes, once again, it was funny trying to hear the lawyer pronounce "Lata Mangashker" and the name of the movie that song was from (after a while, the radio station's DJ's gave up and just started to spell the names...L- A-T-A).
The best part of this whole experience was that for about 1.5 minutes, 97.9 The Box let the listeners hear the original desi song that was sung by Lata. The first desi song (almost in its entirety) being played on a famous Hip Hop and R & B station in a major city! It would have been funny if some uncle desi dude was flippin through radio stations and began to jam to Lata only to be followed up by Master P.
Btw, the term "desi" refers to anything that is of Southeast Asian nature.

http://www.muchmusic.com/muchnews/page.asp?thedate=7/12/2002#7 --- The Truth Really Does Hurt Rapper Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment is in settlement talks in regards to a song by his protégé Truth Hurts. Apparently the song ‘Addictive’ illegally used parts of an Indian movie soundtrack. The song that was sampled was, “Thoda Resham Lagta Hai,” by Hindu singer Lata Mangeshkar, from the movie “Jyoti.” Dre’s lawyers have said that at the time they couldn’t find the original copyright holders. Well, I guess they’ve found them now. We’ll keep you updated on how this legal battle plays out.

JYOTI(1981) Flame[jyoti]
KALIYON=Flower KA=of CHAMAN=flowery area TAB=Then BANTA=Made HAI=Is
THODA=A Little RESHAM=Silk LAGTA=Used HAI=Is
THODA=A Little SHISHA=Glass LAGTA=Used HAI=Is
HIREY=Diamonds MOTI=Pearls JADTE=Fit,Join,Inlay HAI=Is
THODA=A little SONA=Gold LAGTA=Used HAI=Is
KALI is a type of white half inch round flower worn on the back of the head by southindian woman. KALIYON=flower of. CHAMAN is a flowery area with flowers everywhere, sayon a hilly mountainus area, like in Kashmir Valley, with grass and other greenery.A `garden of flowers` doesn`t do justice to a lovely three letter word C+M+N.
LAGTA translated as `feels or looks like` is an obvious answer but when the next four linesare taken into consideration with the first then the meaning becomes obvious. Like in manylanguages this is one of those words which has different meaning in different sentences.LAGTA means `costs` too. (Ek rupiya lagta hai, It costs one rupee). Here the poet istrying to explain as to what is needed or used to make `Kaliyon ka chaman`. I`ve alsotranslated SHISHA as glass not mirror. i know `kaanch` is glass.
All of you also believe that after HIREY MOTI comes LADTE and not JADTE. I originallythought its JADTE but after reading earlier posts i began to believe its LADTE too. After repeatedly listening i couldn`t tell one way or the other. My other half had no doubtthat its JADTE. It is difficult when the song is playing in the background but now thati`ve got the original song i can sincerely say it`s JADTE(Join,Inlay) and not LADTE(Clash).
KALI`S COME INTO EXISTANCE WHEN A LITTLE SILK IS USED, A LITTLE GLASSIS USED. DIAMONDS AND PEARLS ARE INLAYED AND A LITTLE GOLD IS USED.
(It is then that the buds bloom when glass,gold and silk are mixed together and diamondsand pearls are inlayed into it.)
The poet has given a lot of importance to the flowers of KALI. They don`t grow that easily.A little horse dung from the local farm won`t do. :)
The following are additional verses as sung by the `20 years old chick` (Jenn) on a newcd/tape called UMI 10 vol 3 `kaliyon ka chaman` and the following verses are not partof the original song. I doubt the actress on the screen is the actual singer.

Apparently, no one remembered music composer Bappi Lahiri until one of his myriad songs from the 1970s sung by the immortal Lata Mangeshkar suddenly hit the international charts.
The song Thoda resham lagta hai thoda sheesha lagta hai was a mujra sung by the Nightingale and filmed on Aruna Irani and Vijayendra Ghatge in a Jeetendra-Hema Malini starrer Jyoti released in 1977.
The song was not a success on release. It came and faded quickly. No one had any recollection of it until the American rap group Truth Hurts used it as the basic loop in their chartbuster Addictive. Suddenly, the song was big news in India.
Says Lata Mangeshkar, "Quite frankly, I didn't remember this number at all. When I heard it in the number by Truth Hurts, I asked my family where it was from. They told me I had sung it in a film called Jyoti. I don't mind it being used in the American song because the band Truth Hurts hasn't tampered with my voice or the composition in any way. It is far more preferable to the remixes in our country. But I wish they would have credited me and Bappi in the song."
Lahiri who dropped into complete oblivion in the 1990s after scoring immitative hits in scores of films in the 1980s is suddenly in the limelight. And he isn't willing to let go of it that easily. His decision to sue the people behind the track Addictive for using his song without consent has caused delighted humour in the Mumbai film industry.

Indian composer Bappi Lahiri has won an injunction preventing further sales of the Truth Hurts smash 'Addictive' which features hip-hop legend Rakim.
A Los Angeles judge ruled that the hit single, excecutive produced by Dr. Dre, be removed from shops in response to Lahiri's insistence that it lifts four minutes of his original composition, 'Thoda Resham Lagta Hai'.
Bappi Lahiri accuses Interscope Records, Dre and producer DJ Quik of "cultural imperialism".
Anthony Kornarens, Lahiri's attorney said, "The judge took the matter quite seriously and felt as though, from what I could tell, the defendants had not acted appropriately."
The Top 10 U.S. hit was featured on Truth Hurts' 600,000 selling debut album.

had never heard of this artist before, but I found this single in a bargain bin and was drawn by the quik credit…actually pretty good? she’s not given a ton to do vocally but looking at the production credits on the rest of the album, I find it hard to imagine it’s not worth a listen
