Best "Intro-ish song" -> "Big Song" segue to open an album

Okay, similar threads have been done, but this is a little different. The first song has to be an "intro"-type song, and then a big, normal second song. Think the new deerhunter record for an example.

my picks, and sorry to go all corny indie with this but:
Destroyer - City of Daughters ("comments on the world at will" -> "no cease fires")
Home - XIV ("aguirre (shelter)" -> "burden")

heh, the new Deerhunter record was one of the first things I thought of! probably because I've been listening to it nonstop. I wouldn't call "Agoraphobia" a 'big song', tho -- after the big dramatic intro, it comes across as just a pleasant little pop song.

cpost: actually, on further reflection, I think Cryptograms fits this mold much better: 3 minutes of "Intro" droning away aimlessly, starting to fade out, and then suddenly it all comes rushing back and the beat kicks in and the vocals and oh shit, it's a song now! that one's in my all-time top 5 of this kind of thing, certainly.

With a little bit of gold and a Peja (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

"cpost", wtf

With a little bit of gold and a Peja (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

yeah "big" was a dumb word choice, i think i meant length-wise in relation to the intro (the intro's supposed to be kinda short)

I was about to say Wowee Zowee but then I checked and apparently "We Dance" is over 3 minutes long?! I think my memory of it cuts off after "Check that expiration date, man / It's later than you think", cuz I've always thought of it as just this pointless little 90-second foot-shuffling intro before "Rattled by the Rush" kicks things off.

With a little bit of gold and a Peja (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 04:17 (seventeen years ago)

hah, wowee actually came to mind for me too (as it often does, being my favorite album). it would work very nicely here if "we dance" was about 50% shorter and a little less fully-realized. obv it's a perfect song so i wouldnt want to change it a bit.
but yeah, the idea is a shorter, more subdued opener

What exactly qualifies as an "intro" type song? I'm instinctively thinking of albums where the first song is quiet and thoughtful and then they hit you with their biggest rocker (like No Code or The Colour and the Shape) - but is there something more to being an intro song? Like do you need a Parliament-esque spoken word part, or a guy proclaiming "Welcome to the carnival!"?

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 04:43 (seventeen years ago)

hm, spoken word definitely helps
and again it doesnt have to be the biggest song or anything
think "abstractish, shorter" song followed by a more straightforward type
if you're familiar with the three examples i gave those are pretty much archetypes

I like the idea of starting a record this way, it's very theatrical.

The car jams that open each side of Double Nickels on the Dime kind of fit the bill, if you can call any Minutemen song a "big, normal second song."

winner by a mile. Transition from "A.D. 1928" to "Rockin' the Paradise" was, to, 12-year-old me, the definition of rock majesty (though to be fair I didn't strongly distinguish it from the transition between the quiet part of "Come Sail Away" to the loud part, equally majestic and later to be a plot point in the Freaks and Geeks pilot.)

TMBG, "Flood," another worthy example ("It's a brand new album / for 1990...") though crushed by Styx like everyone else.
