parts of timbalands albums. missys albums. erick sermons solo albums (god some of his rapping back then was poor). the black milk albums dont have bad rapping by any means but the beats do help a lot. answers to this thread = basically any album from a producer-turned-rapper.

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 23 November 2008 19:05 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Timbaland's first two albums def.

They sound alright but dear god I wish Jaylib's Champion Sound was given to a real, focused MC.

a hoy hoy, Sunday, 23 November 2008 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

champion sound would have been okay if it was just dilla and his boys rapping on it rather than madlib.

I think the beats on Beastie Boys' To The Five Boroughs are pretty dope in comparison to the pisspoor rapping

I gotta say, Jermaine Dupri's production on the first Kriss Kross album is pretty solid.

makeitpop, Monday, 24 November 2008 06:06 (seventeen years ago)

I'd feel sort of bad for saying Blowout Comb, since I do kind of like their vocals, but it's hard to imagine their rapping standing that strongly on its own.

I gotta say, Jermaine Dupri's production on the first Kriss Kross album is pretty solid.

OTM! "Warm it up Kris" is one of my perennial go-to jams. How old was Dupri when that shit came out. Couldn't have been much past high school.

Wearing ones jeans and/or baseball jersey backward, ala DM & MD, actually became a popular fashion choice for some of my fellow 9th graders back then. For about two weeks or so, at least.

The Most Photographed Barn on the Internet (Pillbox), Monday, 24 November 2008 09:08 (seventeen years ago)

Quasimoto, or whathever that thing was called. Mainly, the nice beats kinda make up for the irritating gimmick of the chipmunk raps.

Tuomas, Monday, 24 November 2008 09:33 (seventeen years ago)

Anything by Gang Starr! Sorry Guru...

Stew, Monday, 24 November 2008 10:09 (seventeen years ago)

Definitely Gang Starr. I was just about to suggest Step in the Arena.

Dorianlynskey, Monday, 24 November 2008 10:45 (seventeen years ago)

Guru's best raps are a huge part of what makes Gang Starr ace. When he's boring or stupid the beats don't often save the track.

Me and Ruth Lorenzo, Rollin' in the Benzo (Noodle Vague), Monday, 24 November 2008 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

Quasimoto is great, although I can understand it might not be to everyone's taste.

is that my man hannity?? (deej), Monday, 24 November 2008 10:53 (seventeen years ago)

To be fair, he's gotten a lot better since Step In The Arena, it's just that his flow can be a bit monotonous. He can make a virtue of that sometimes...

see, my brain suppresses most of my memories of the rapping on this album, so I never actually remember why it's so bad. but then every time I start to think that I might be selling it short, I throw it on and within seconds hear shit like:

Nutcracker doin' hits by the dozen
when I make moves, I ride the train with my cousin
nowhere near simple; my mental
flex more complex than Mozart's instrumental

I'ma have to disagree with this though, because A.) I don't really think the shit Doseone's doing with his voice at this point is 'rapping', and B.) I really like it. a lot.

With a little bit of gold and a Peja (bernard snowy), Monday, 24 November 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

so you're the one

Granny Dainger, Monday, 24 November 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

"All Eyez On Me" is amazingly produced and almost makes up for the fact that it does contain rapping at all.

Geir, when you see the phrase "Hip-Hop albums" in the new answers que, what inspires you to open the thread?

The lyrics on Licensed to Ill are great.

The lyrics on Paul's Boutique vary. Car Thief, et al, are fantastic narratives. Mike D already proves the weak link. Yauch proves to be in his own world, which was a plus at that time.

The lyrics on Pass da Mic (and nearly all from this point) are atrocious.

i am truley sorry for your lots (PappaWheelie V), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

(the fact that Run-DMC wrote Paul Revere and Slow & Low is not immediately noticeable says something about Licensed)

Some Kanye - for me, specifically "Diamonds in Sierra Leone." The production is so bombastic and serious (as well as the video) that it even drowns out his verse sometimes. Later, when I heard the line about the "fat friend, her nickname is minivan" I looked up the lyrics and they're pretty asinine.

skygreenleopard, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

Also, RZA is my xp in the thread.

skygreenleopard, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

there are many many Kanye songs that belong in this thread, "Diamonds" is not one of them.
