This song was pleasant enough back in the 70s, but why is it at #21 on the UK singles chart this week?
― Maltodextrin, Sunday, 23 November 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)
It's been permanently on R2 for the past few months
― Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 23 November 2008 22:30 (seventeen years ago)
And I'd be lying if I didn't say I enjoyed it the 1st few times it was on.
― Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 23 November 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)
It's on an advert for credit cards or something.
― Sven Hassel Schmuck, Monday, 24 November 2008 10:49 (seventeen years ago)
Cool record. Where's Chuck?

BECAUSE IT'S DOPE AS FUCK
― Me and Ruth Lorenzo, Rollin' in the Benzo (Noodle Vague), Monday, 24 November 2008 10:56 (seventeen years ago)
these guys made some really good country/pop records after "Let Your Love Flow" if you like that song check their first greatest hits
― m coleman, Monday, 24 November 2008 10:57 (seventeen years ago)
though their attempts at reggae/country fusion, however well intended, were seriously misguided
― m coleman, Monday, 24 November 2008 10:58 (seventeen years ago)
My dad played this shit in the car all the time when we were kids. B/W Sutherland Brothers and Quiver.

"ein bett im kornfeld". it was a huge hit in 76 and it made jürgen drews famous (only in deutschland, i suppose).

another try:
― alex in mainhattan, Monday, 24 November 2008 11:18 (seventeen years ago)
It's on the Barclaycard advert with the water flume going through the city
― caek, Monday, 24 November 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)
When Big & Rich first hit, I was convinced that if they covered this song, they'd sell a million singles.
― Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 09:53 (seventeen years ago)
Seriously catchy
― Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 09:55 (seventeen years ago)
Even the verse melody, yeah.

What an absolutely glorious record. I've loved it since I can remember. The Bellamys also occasioned one of my favorite Christgau lines: "Shameless, hooky, and slick, their country is about as pure as Mike Curb, who signed them, but if you can resist 'If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me' you don't eat fried food, and I say the hell with you."
― Matos W.K., Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:57 (seventeen years ago)
I downloaded it off Amazon; thanks be to this thread for prompting it. (Though I look at the UK Top 40 every week and was surprised to see this there, too; I've been thinking about it anyway.)
― Matos W.K., Tuesday, 25 November 2008 11:04 (seventeen years ago)
I don't know if this has any real meaning anymore, but it did once, so I'll say it anyway: This is really one of the most ILM singles ever made.
― Matos W.K., Tuesday, 25 November 2008 11:09 (seventeen years ago)
I am dying to see what Tracer has to say about this song.
This was on a list Dave Edmunds made once of his 10 favorite summer tracks.
― If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 11:11 (seventeen years ago)
Where was that list published? Rolling Stone, by chance?
― Matos W.K., Tuesday, 25 November 2008 11:14 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah.

I've seen the issue. Marshall Crenshaw did one too; this was all right around the time of Field Day. MC listed "Could You Be Loved" and "Baby Come to Me," among others.
― If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 11:16 (seventeen years ago)
I have the DVD set, I'll check it out sometime. Thanks.
― Matos W.K., Tuesday, 25 November 2008 11:21 (seventeen years ago)
I love the way the lead vocal is kind of buried in the mix--because he's at one with his surroundings!
― Matos W.K., Tuesday, 25 November 2008 11:22 (seventeen years ago)
Hookiest thing in this ridiculous hookfest of a record: the acoustic guitar strumming on the verses. It's what I always, always, always remember.
― Matos W.K., Tuesday, 25 November 2008 11:23 (seventeen years ago)
it's one of those songs i would give a lot for to listen to for the first time again. not only because i was young (13 in 1976) but because it was so unbelievably great and full of sparkling energy. it has that summer song vibe and it was played on german radio a lot in the summer of 1976 which was a perfect, very hot summer iirc. it didn't rain for six weeks or something like that.
― alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 11:30 (seventeen years ago)
It sounds like the label looks.

I just heard this song in a Safeway ad here in California.
― Maltodextrin, Thursday, 11 December 2008 06:51 (seventeen years ago)
Nostalgia will always cloud objectivity for me, but yeah, love this song.
The only 70s crossover-country song I love more is Pure Prarie League's Amie (providing Glen Campbell's cover of Southern Nights doesn't count).
― my name is crap jones (PappaWheelie V), Thursday, 11 December 2008 07:02 (seventeen years ago)
I just heard Petra Haden covering this song in a Toyota Prius commercial.

good version but doesn't really open any new doors in the song, despite being recorded at Muscle Shoals with the studio band.
wonder if Joan wanted to forefront the hippie vibe by opening her album with this song?
― droit au butt (Euler), Thursday, 31 December 2015 16:41 (ten years ago)
Love it. I don't think the song needs any new doors to be opened!
― timellison, Thursday, 31 December 2015 17:26 (ten years ago)
yeah of course I agree
