"Only the Lonely" is just really, really good.

...if not totally CLASSIC. You WILL agree with me! Or die!

Sinatra? CLASSIC. Especially 'Goodbye'.

A great song, but not a patch on "In Dreams"

Baxter Wingnut, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the big E, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, love Roy, not Sinatra (or at least not as much, that lovable punchy fuck.)

Dan I., Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Man, and here I was thinking nobody had any love for the Motels any more! Right on, you guys. Right on.

John Darnielle, Tuesday, 28 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

tom west (thomp), Saturday, 1 May 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

That Motels song is freakin' amazing. I mean, I would hear it in my head, at least once a year, for no apparent reason.

The Motels' song is stone cold classic

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 1 May 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i was just about to post the same sentiment.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 1 May 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Dyson, was this inspired by the recent MMM-aired special? Cuz that got me a-listenin' too. I think "Running Scared" is pretty damn hot shit. Just weird songs, weird structures, weird arrangements, but wholly unforgettable. Sometimes.

Huck, Sunday, 2 May 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

what abt the four tops version then??

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 2 May 2004 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

That's "Ask the Lonely." Not that I love it any less.

As for Orbison, S/D "It's Over."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 2 May 2004 06:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't hear that song playing without thinking of that John Candy movie.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 2 May 2004 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

how many orbison songs have become movie titles?

Huck, Sunday, 2 May 2004 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Blue Bayou

sexyDancer, Sunday, 2 May 2004 06:51 (twenty-one years ago)

You know what really gets my goat!!! Is how in 'Working for the Man' it sounds like a sort of quasi-folk protest song, - but it turns out in the end to be a Shangri-La style story song in which the narrator marries the bosses daughter and becomes the man, with little subsequent analysis of the hypocrisy of his position!

. (...), Sunday, 2 May 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, in "Leah" he doesn't really drown, either.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 2 May 2004 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

He did have a heart attack on his mom's front lawn, though.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 2 May 2004 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No song, though.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 2 May 2004 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

huck - i saw no special. i only get 5 channels.
should tvo have anything on him - i'm on it like a fat kid on twinkies¡

dyson (dyson), Sunday, 2 May 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

like the Royster, but not this song.

uh, Monday, 3 May 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"Only the Lonely" (esp. the very last "you-hooo gotta ta-ay-ay-ake") is one of the greatest songs ever.

How about this -- I say "(Anything you want)You Got It" has more pathos than any other Roy song, even though it is ostensibly happy.

Truman Capote (Truman Capote), Monday, 3 May 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

(and even though the production is silly)

Truman Capote (Truman Capote), Monday, 3 May 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

:-(

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 3 May 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

gimme "Cryin'"

(the version in Mulholland Drive ruled, too)

uh, Monday, 3 May 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the plethora of Roy Orbison stuff on cable TV nearly justifies the exorbitant rates. No, not really. But there are few things that show up on PBS, Bravo and MuchMoreMusic with surprising regularity.
Best is the one with footage of this weird tv special he did in the 70s where he's slighty paunchy and wearing a very unflattering sequined jumpsuit. But the music, the music.

Also, for some reason, perhaps the k.d. lang duet, I thought Roy Orbison was Canadian until as few as three years ago.
