deej, Thursday, 27 November 2008 04:34 (seventeen years ago)

should have just called it 'd'angepoll,' since there's an o in poll

deej, Thursday, 27 November 2008 04:35 (seventeen years ago)

no, "d'angepollo" is definitely the lesser of two evils here.

dumb pseud (some dude), Thursday, 27 November 2008 04:44 (seventeen years ago)

The grooves are good, but it's rather uneventful.

WE DO THIS FOR THE GHETTO! (The Reverend), Thursday, 27 November 2008 05:02 (seventeen years ago)

u dont 'get it'

deej, Thursday, 27 November 2008 05:05 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know. I want more, no matter the outcome. The lack of giant D'angelo catalog is what brought me to Dwele, Darien Brockington, etc.

Speaking of:

And shortly after Brown Sugar, got me on the lookout for Chico Debarge's post-lockdown comeback!

(Chico and D'angelo, along with Erykah Badu, were all managed by Kedar Massenburg in 96/97)

I'm well past giving it the benefit of the doubt. So at this point I just say there isn't much to get.

I can't get into Dwele (for perhaps some of the same reasons I can't dig "Voodoo"). Dude has a nice voice, and interesting production, but what the fuck is with his absolute refusal to write songs? He's like the Fleet Foxes of r&b. The cover of "Open Your Eyes" on his latest stands out so much just by dint of having a tune.

Chico is the man. I've been on the lookout for that album for years.

I love Brown Sugar, but it's a hell of a lot slighter than Voodoo, which I'm surprised isn't getting much love here. BS is a total apprentice record, where it feels like he's trying to show off to the record company all that he can do--it's really good, but it's like the short stories of an exceptional student writer.

Voodoo is the big, sprawling, 900 page novel that writer churns out in 11 months after he graduates. Totally on his own, he rejoices in the absence of teachers, rules, limits. Sure it's overblown, overlong, undisciplined. But what a record! It's nuts! There's so much good stuff in there!

Voted Voodoo because i've spent the past week listening to How Does It Feel on repeat. Iggin Me is a classic too, thank you for reminding me of its existence.

i skip no traxxx on brown sugar

but that said i totally understand preferring voodoo and think it is a gr8 incredible album as well -- im just not mad at a trad nusoul r&b record, and think its a particularly great one

deej, Thursday, 27 November 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

deej as a genuinely curious dude who doesn't 'get' voodoo--what am i missing? all i'm hearing are long slick funk workouts which hey i'm all for it, but is there more to it than that?
