Polyrock & Model Citizens are great.

Nervus Rex & The Laughing Dogs are great.

The Marbles & Gary Valentine were fun at times.

Had to go w/ Lance Loud & The Mumps though.

Student Teachers were a great pop band.

Model Citizens became the Dance.

dan selzer, Friday, 28 November 2008 02:07 (seventeen years ago)

There really is a lot of underrated pop gems that got left out of the Sire (et al) scoopup.

Lance Loud's quote of "The Mumps were one blow job away from fame" is always priceless.

As is Albert Brooks's (and Harry Shearer's) parody of An American Family.

Voted for the only one of those I've seen live, the Fleshtones.

How come Speedies but no Comateens?

Nervus Rex!

did i see US Ape on the Uncle Floyd Show?

Dr Morbius, Friday, 28 November 2008 05:04 (seventeen years ago)

Speedies are there.

I knew I'd forget someone though.

Comateens are noted as your write in candidate.

Did the Speedies get lots of new fans when they were used in that hp commercial and that album was released in the past year or two?

You could have seen anybody on the Uncle Floyd show. Until recently I didn't realize he was brothers with that guy who plays with Max Weinberg. Actually I didn't realize that he was brothers with the two guys who play with Max Weinberg, I thought they were one and the same guy.

Today I drove by place where I went to high school with Eric of the Speedies and Oliver of the Comateens. I would have reminisced, but I already did that here

Mink DeVille, for the tragically underrated first album. "The boys, they talkin' 'bout cha, say 'Yeah.'"

It's all in the delivery.

So many great artists and so many good songs its almost impossible to choose.
I'll go with Mumps.

Marco Damiani, Friday, 9 January 2009 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

do you know if there is any other good comp collecting these artists besides "the great new york singles scene", "live at cbgb's" and "max's 1976"?

Marco Damiani, Friday, 9 January 2009 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

never heard of any of these guys so i voted the shirts cause i enjoy their name

what, no red transistor?

Edward III, Friday, 9 January 2009 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

there was a later CD comp that Marty put out with some Red Transistor tracks but I don't remember if they were proper Red Transistor tracks w/ Rudolf Grey or later stuff without Grey. But they're more grouped in with the No Wave scene.

dan selzer, Friday, 9 January 2009 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

i used to have that criminals 45. syl's post-dolls group. it was okay, but not great.

i used to have two shirts albums when i was a kid, but i could never get into them. seemed kinda boring on record. i knew about annie golden cuz she was in the hair movie that i loved.

i'm guessing the major label polyrock stuff sounds different from their early days. they plugged that polyrock debut to DEATH back then. full page ads in all the rock mags for a solid year, i swear.

i think my brother had the tuff darts album. i know he had the first couple robert gordon albums when they came out.

I always thought The Shirts were basically an old school bar band in sound that got lumped in with the rest by being at the same place at the same time. Cf The Good Rats.

ilx chilton (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 9 January 2009 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

my boss at the deli was always going on about the good rats

Edward III, Friday, 9 January 2009 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

greg the bassist from the speedies is now a world famous art photographer, and the head of the photo dept at yale. pretty coincidental (he didn't write "let me take your foto"). he's also a swell dude, and loves dancing to blondie.

okamax, Friday, 9 January 2009 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

between the speedies and the marbles, i went with the speedies because they just had so many hits. the know and nervus rex rank up there for me too...

okamax, Friday, 9 January 2009 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I haven't seen Eric from the Speedies since high school but I understand he did pretty well at Apple and has some patents to his credit.

Annie was my intro to any and all of non-radio cbgb alumni thanks to the incredible Hang Up the Phone being featured in Sixteen Candles:

Jake: Yes, hello sir... Um

Howard: Are you the little bugger that's been calling up here all night and then hanging up?

Jake: Would it be possible for you to tell me if there is a Samantha Baker there and if so may I converse with her briefly?

Howard: Yes there is and NO you may not.

Jake: Might I leave a message sir?

Howard: He wants to leave a message for Sam.

I still say is a ________________ there and if so may I converse with her/him briefly? regularly.

Transatlantic Dementia (PappaWheelie V), Friday, 9 January 2009 21:03 (seventeen years ago)

Annie was my intro to any and all of non-radio cbgb alumni

They sometimes appeared on the radio on live broadcasts from, um, CBGBs I think.

Wayne County. Saw her a couple of times in nineties, playing with pick-up bands of local musician. Uprorious banter and very rocking, though the records I've heard don't really capture it,

Auotobiography "Man enough to be a woman" is a great punk rock read.

Soukesian, Friday, 9 January 2009 21:16 (seventeen years ago)

The Fast were pretty great though:

I imagine I still would've voted Mumps even if they weren't the only band on here that I've heard.

Vaguely Threatening CAPTCHAs, Friday, 9 January 2009 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

i was looking for that goofy interview footage of mumps and fast, but i got stuck watching night at harrah instead. i could watch all night long!!! (i wish there was a 70's disco footage cable channel)

Soukesian, Friday, 9 January 2009 23:40 (seventeen years ago)

i don't know if I'm the only one who has trouble with this, but there's a UK power-pop band called Fast Cars from Manchester who appeared on the Manchester Collection comp on Object Music who have a song called The Kids Just Wanna Dance, that has nothing in common with the song above.

The Fast also featured Ian North of Milk-n-Cookies who'd go onto to do this:

dan selzer, Saturday, 10 January 2009 03:33 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to resist posting Shox Lumania, Richard Bone and Man Parrish videos...

dan selzer, Saturday, 10 January 2009 03:37 (seventeen years ago)

Milk 'n Cookies! Dan, were you at Radio Heartbeat? So fucking brilliant. "10 girls 20 girls, i want more/ 40 girls 50 girls, just because!"

okamax, Saturday, 10 January 2009 03:38 (seventeen years ago)

Also, Fast Cars were fantastic... that song was also on 100% British Mod, which features the song Blood Splattered with Guitars by the Accidents, which may be my favorite song ever, and has that one brilliant part where it goes dub even though it's this crunchy mod song. But that's for another thread.

okamax, Saturday, 10 January 2009 03:45 (seventeen years ago)

I have never been to or been involved with Radio Heartbeat.

dan selzer, Saturday, 10 January 2009 06:04 (seventeen years ago)

it's a powerpop night in williamsburg (now at the charleston) that spun into a festival at Southpaw for four glorious days in 2007. milk 'n cookies, the speedies, pointed sticks, 20/20, nikki corvette, the neighborhoods all played--sort of an old fogies kind of thing, but they all really got into it--a bunch of younger powerpop bands played as well. lots of shout along choruses.

the record label re-issues a bunch of awesome stuff--including milk n cookies http://radioheartbeat.net/

okamax, Saturday, 10 January 2009 06:32 (seventeen years ago)

I know what it is, just saying I've never been and wasn't involved!

dan selzer, Saturday, 10 January 2009 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

"There's that Marty Thau comp...2x5, should be pretty easy to find, I think I have 2!"

Thanks as usual, Dan.
I think this compilation (or part of it) was released on cd with a different title, something like "Naked City Stories". I tried to find it but it is out of print.

Bloodless Pharaohs = Brian Setzer's contribution to art rock.

sonderangerbot, Friday, 6 February 2009 01:54 (seventeen years ago)

five years pass...

As I understand it, Marty Thau - a fixture on the CBGBs scene who most notably managed the New York Dolls and released the "Marty Thau Presents 2x5" that is referenced above, passed away.

I was introduced to him by David Scharff - a former member of The Student Teachers who worked with me at TVT Records who knew Thau from his time during the halcyon days of CBGBs. He came around a bit because he brought the label the "Groups Of Wrath" compilation featuring old tracks from The Ramones, New York Dolls, Suicide and others while I worked there.

He was a joy to talk to - he didn't care that I was just a kid in the warehouse, he spoke with me about the old days while I listened intently - and he recently friended me on Facebook where I enjoyed reading his thoughts on politics and pop culture. He was a very interesting guy who led an enviable life in so many ways. I wish I knew him better and am jealous of those who did.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 17 February 2014 05:19 (twelve years ago)

I mentioned his passing on the ILE obit thread and others talked about him on a NY Dolls thread I think. I didn't realize till now the range of things the guy did, or the respect and love he received. RIP

I do have stuff to say about the Speedies. One of them used to live a block away from me on University Place. I accosted him, about six or seven years ago, saying "Hey, ... you were in the Speedies!" and he practically started crying. It was a bit awkward.
