...I'm talking about albums that you would normally describe to others as "absolutely flawless". I mean, let's be honest -- every album must have imperfections; some albums are just so ridiculously amazing that it's extremely difficult to notice them. I guess I'll start.

  • Loveless is, of course, epic, but, as much as I hate to admit it, the songs do start to sort of run together by the end. It might have been better if it were a bit shorter, or perhaps had more variation. (I'm not saying it's the production style per se that gets monotonous, but rather it would be nice if the songs structures were a bit more varied -- i.e. if there there were a few more songs like "Soon" or "To Here Knows When", say.)
  • I like the first track on Super AE, but it's sort of weak compared to the rest of the album, and not good as an opening track anyway. Eliminating it and making "Super Are" the opener might actually work better, and allow us to get to the joy-rush that is "Super Going" all the sooner.

the beginning of Super AE is HILARIOUS though!

Replace "Black Diamond" with their cover of "Temptation Eyes" on the Replacements' Let It Be.

Make 'On Some Faraway Beach' the last track on Brian Eno's Here Come The Warm Jets.

Popture, Friday, 28 November 2008 05:35 (seventeen years ago)

Double Nickels On The Dime should fit on one CD without cutting tracks :/

Loveless sucks ass. What a zzZZZzz album. Isn't Anything, on the other hand, perfectufkingection. Buzzy fuzzy guitars, young and rough melodic vocals (and it has been shown us whitey northern europeans enjoyed music with a raspy and imperfect sound), this dreamy hazy slacker vibe. very cool.

Loveless? Sub-Kranky nonsense.

burt_stanton, Friday, 28 November 2008 05:41 (seventeen years ago)

Sticky Fingers should have the opening part of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" come back in after the long instrumental part.

james k polk, Friday, 28 November 2008 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

'Friends' is my favorite Beach Boys album...replace "Transcendental Meditation" with "I Went to Sleep" from 20/20 and it's perfect.

iatee, Friday, 28 November 2008 05:59 (seventeen years ago)

niiceonne . although I am starting to think 20/20 is my favourite beach boys album

▧_▨ (wilter), Friday, 28 November 2008 06:03 (seventeen years ago)

I say just ADD about 1/3 of 20/20 to Friends...but then again, they added all of it, so, you know.

Remove Party for Your Right to Fight from Nation of Millions.

Hampton Grease Band's Music To Eat really coulda used a lyric sheet. Many times, I can't make out what Hampton's hollering at all - and the lyrics themselves are cryptic enough as it is. (Even after desert scream/Canadian stamp and asses ream, wtf?)

Also, I'd re-sequence Side One of Maggot Brain, placing the title cut AFTER the openers "Hit It and Quit It" / "Can You Get To That?" rather than opening with it.

Remove skits from [Pick hiphop album at random].

a hoy hoy, Friday, 28 November 2008 11:07 (seventeen years ago)

More BB pick n' mix
Student Demonstration Time in the dustbin
California Saga Pt I+II also......... although I'd miss the fit of giggles I get at 'the she-eagle was old.....'

sonofstan, Friday, 28 November 2008 11:54 (seventeen years ago)

Revolver: I'd soften up 'Taxman' somehow, add tape hiss or giggles or something, or replace it with a half-assed live version. I've always found it too cold and jarring as an opener

Ismael Klata, Friday, 28 November 2008 12:17 (seventeen years ago)

Make "Wish I Was Skinny" and "Barney & Me" more crazy on the Boo Radleys' Giant Steps. They just seem too straight-up and acousticy compared to the mondo ambient dub shoegaze of the rest of the album.

the next grozart, Friday, 28 November 2008 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

Drop Liars Tears off Drawn From Memory and stick in Get On Board, and stick Brothers & Sisters on as a hidden track.

Extend Black Like Me off Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga by 2 or 3 minutes.

nate woolls, Friday, 28 November 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think I'd describe many of my favourite albums as flawless. The flaws can be part of the charm.

I reckon there are parts of The Ninth Wave on Hounds Of Love that I'd remove - but, depending on what mood I'm in, they would be different parts every time.

hobart paving, Friday, 28 November 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

Amnesiac: Remove the completely unnecesary and awful revamp of Morning Bell, perhaps drop the filler of 'hunting bears' and change the twitched 'like a spinning plates' album version for the real song with piano that thom performed live and you got an almost decent companion to 'kid a'.

Perhaps substitute those two songs I mentioned for a couple of a more crafted version of their b-sides like 'fog' or 'worrywort' which are times better than those two that made it to the album cut.

Blood On The Tracks: Replace Meet Me In The Morning with Call Letter Blues, and Lily Rosemary & The Jack of Hearts with Up To Me

kornrulez6969, Friday, 28 November 2008 17:52 (seventeen years ago)

pet sounds - replace 'i know there's an answer' with 'hang on to your ego'

Darkness on the Edge of Town + 'The Promise'

iatee, Saturday, 29 November 2008 08:36 (seventeen years ago)

"Selling England By The Pound". The finishing instrumental sections of "Dancing With The Moonlight Knight" and "The Cinema Show" both appear a bit too long, or, that is, the songs would have been better if they had gotten back and done more vocal parts towards the end, simply added a couple more vocal sections at the end of both.

noooo!! You can't take Meet Me In The Morning off! That's one of the quiet, understated tracks of the album, that you expect to be a lull between the better songs but actually ends up being one of the ones you like most.
Or is that just me?
Could probably cope without Lily, Rosemary etc.. but its got a superficial instant charm that works, even if it doesn't last.

hobart paving, Saturday, 29 November 2008 12:07 (seventeen years ago)

Call Letter Blues is Meet Me In The Morning. Same song, except with lyrics that directly referece his divorce.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 29 November 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

brian wilson does not go mad and finishes smile with the beach boys back in the late 60s

Dr X O'Skeleton, Saturday, 29 November 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

I would shorten the instrumental ending from "The Concept" on Bandwagonesque.

Vision, Saturday, 29 November 2008 21:26 (seventeen years ago)

The only album I would call "flawless" is the first Ramones album. And the only thing I could do to make it better would be go back in time and make them not use "Blitzkreig Bop" in beer commercials and baseball games so the album wouldn't be kicked off by a fucking Jock Jam

I support this. That track would have worked better if the A side and B side were switched like they originally had it.

Depeche Mode: "Construction Time Again". Should have had "Fools" on it instead of "Pipeline". I mean, in spite of the ping pong and all....

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 30 November 2008 00:26 (seventeen years ago)

The whole Birthday Party discography would be better split up into four-to-six song 12" EPs along the lines of Hee Haw, Bad Seed, Mutiny, and the one with "Release the Bats." One of my favorite bands ever, but their intensity is most overwhelming in 20 minute chunks.
