"Better" is best.

dumb pseud (some dude), Friday, 28 November 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

title track, then "if the world," then "better."

J0hn D., Friday, 28 November 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

bridge of "there was a time" sound so bowie it's bizarre tho

J0hn D., Friday, 28 November 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't know anyone liked the title track! And I like a fair amount of songs on here.

Better

The only songs I don't like are "Catcher In The Rye," "This I Love" and "Sorry," but "Better," the title track and "Riad N' The Bedouins" are my top three.

I'll vote for "Sorry," as in, I feel sorry for anyone who willingly listens to any of these tracks.

ilxor, Thursday, 4 December 2008 07:31 (seventeen years ago)

I don't buy CDs anymore.

I voted for "Shackler's Revenge" because this album Axl's revenge on the shackles of public expectations.

I voted for "I.R.S." because I'm claiming this purchase on my tax return as a business expense, because it sure as hell wasn't for pleasure.

I voted for "Madagascar" because I decided to spend my money on a ticket to a fun-filled animated sequel starring Ben Stiller instead.

I voted for "There Was A Time" because there was a time when people would've cared about this album, and that time was 1994.

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all night.

There Was a Time -- do the mnemonic on that one

mottdeterre, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

dad a, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

pretty fitting that a dude named "dad a" shows up to do dad jokes w/ alex

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

in my head is was like the easy/bad joke showdowns they do on Weekend Update sometimes

Leaning toward "If the World" so far (for the high register singing, dubbish use of space, jazzy parts), but I've only been playing the album in the background, in my CD changer, and see what hits me by accident. No plans to listen especially close to the thing, or to try to play it from beginning to end in one sitting, at least not this year. That would just feel like work.

I would like to respectfully request that a moderator rename this thread to "The Chinese Democracy Poll" so that people like myself won't be fooled into clicking on a thread they have absolutely no interest in. I would also like to respectfully request that anyone who considers starting a thread or poll put a little bit of thought into exactly what they are communicating with the title they choose. For example, mentioning a mere album title or song title and assuming everyone else in the universe is aware of the particular artist you're speaking of is another pet peeve of mine around here.

It's also worth noting that being specific in your thread title means folks can find your thread more easily in the search engine later.

if i'm not mistaken, there are other easily searchable 'chinese democracy' discussions. the putative vagueness of this thread title was meant 1) to protest britney on the cover of 'rolling stone' instead of axl by way of mirroring the underwhelming media reception for what one might have expected, at the first mention of this album 17 years ago, to be quite the opposite, and 2) to highlight what 17 years ago might have passed as a clever p.i.l.-esque acronym for a newly dominant music listening technology and has since become a standard, generic term, like "record" and "lp"
