In Istanbul they were talking about these guys, sounded interesting, described as Tuvan throat punk with wild live shows. Are they actually any good, and if so, on what records?

Yat-Kha are top notch. Even before they hit the covers-of-western-pop-music thing that got them noticed here, they were modernizing. They also do the pure Tuvan folk music thing pretty well (though Huun-Huur-Tu are definitely the masters on that front). My favorite Yat-Kha record is 'Dalai Beldiri', especially the track 'Ydyk Buura' where the electric rhythm guitarist is using his feedback squelch to mimic the overtone scales of the throat singing. The last half-minute of that song is what I wished La Monte Young's blues band had sounded like.
