Can you give me any examples of 'virtuoso' musicians who REALLY suck when they play other instruments.

e.g. Yngwie's bass playing is dreadful

Ornette on violin comes immediately to mind, though I kind of like it anyway...

Fela playing organ/piano but everybody just kind of let him do it because he's Fela.

Sting's sax playing is none too remarkable, as I recall. (Not that he's supposed to be a "virtuoso" on the bass, but he's a fusion player, at least.)

Miles' electric organ on Pangaea is pretty primitive, but I kind of like it, just as I like Fela's keyboard solos.

There are stories about Jaco Pastorius showing up to a bass clinic in the mid-eighties -- completely fucked up on something-or-other -- and refusing to play bass, choosing instead to noodle around on the piano, playing gospel licks and hoarsely singing along with himself. The issue there, of course, isn't really bad piano playing per se...

Slash on vocals.

Actually, I think most virtuosi tend to sound a bit strange on other instruments. Except for Arturo Sandoval. I heard him play piano, and he was just as good as when he plays trumpet. I couldn't believe it.

What abt Braxton on piano? Haven't picked up any of those yet. Any opinions?

Jeff Healey has picked up the trumpet...but he actually sounds not too bad on that, so.

I have a Braxton album where he plays piano, and stanards, with a standard quartet.

He isn't exactly a brilliant pianist, but the music works out, and his version of 'Brilliant Corners' has a lot of passion, still not as good as his actual saxophone playing by any means.

Bob Dylan's FUCKING BLOODY AWFUL harmonica playing ("the longest running joke in pop music but no less cringeworthy for that" - Creem)

It's amazing how many people have ripped off Dylan's harp style and Al Kooper's organ style, neither of whom had a clue what they were doing.
