Andre/internet tie.

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

Internet's to blame for it as an underground movement, 'dre is to blame for it being commercially viable.

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

voted Kanye in the original CB poll, might switch it up to Andre here.

actually on second thought I'm voting for Pharrell, he shepherded a lot of that BAPE shit in around the time his beats started getting all limp an dshitty

dumb pseud (some dude), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

all of these xxl guys are really just a bunch of dudes trying to be lupe fiasco, who was brought to us by kanye so i''m voting kanye

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 16:59 (sixteen years ago)

yeah Charles Hamilton is like Lupe-is-a-hamburger bad idea jeans x10

dumb pseud (some dude), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 16:59 (sixteen years ago)

“God is a woman and pink is the inside of a woman’s womb and that’s where life comes out of, so wearing pink is a way of showing respect to God,” Hamilton explained. And as for Sonic the Hedgehog, well sonic means ‘sound’ and hedgehogs bury themselves underground, so “I’m Sonic the Hedgehog because I bury myself into sound,” he said.

dumb pseud (some dude), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

the thing about andre is that his move from parliament-type space age-ness and into the soft-serve fedora era also coincided w/ him ceasing to rap and become way less visible in pop culture and in the rap world

for this reason, i also voted kanye

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

streetwear blogs are to blame

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that's true, as big as Andre was at the height of his space shit, noone was really following his lead in '03. i think a lot of rappers still have in mind now when they pick up a guitar or sing a cheesy R&B hook or wear a sweater vest, though.

dumb pseud (some dude), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

^^^good read for this tbomb from killer mike:

KM: If you look at most southern rappers who are successful, they walk in the room with a $70 pair of jeans, $5 white tee and a $60 pair of sneakers – with a chain, hat and sunglasses. Every successful “so-called” conscious rapper is usually rockin’ a $400 shirt, $600 jeans and some sneakers that regular people can’t pronounce or obtain. Who really reflects the value of the people?

deej, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 18:03 (sixteen years ago)

i think its kind of astretch to call these dudes 'conscious' anymore

:) Mrs Edward Cullen XD (max), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

(1988) Eric B. & Rakim - Follow The Leader

So follow me and were ya thinkin' you were first?
Let's travel at magnificent speeds around the Universe
What could ya say as the Earth gets further and further away
Planets are small as balls of clay
Astray into the Milky Way - world's outasight
Far as the eye can see - not even a satellite
Now stop and turn around and look
As ya stare in the darkness, ya knowledge is took!
So keep starin soon ya suddenly see a star
You better follow it cause it's the R
This is a lesson if ya guessin and if ya borrowin
Hurry hurry step right up and keep followin

:) Mrs Edward Cullen XD (max), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

If you transported your common-or-garden wannabe Rawkus MC from 08 to the present day though, would they be doing this stuff?

Peter "One Dart" Manley (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

it's so obviously Teh Internets. their whole fanbase is organized on the internet and its really the only medium they've used at all, to the degree that it has actually been leveraged into things like ticket sales and magazine covers and ads, etc.

it's true that Lupe is basically the blueprint for their style though.

that's like blaming someone for introducing an alcoholic to smack, kanye was always gonna go on some corny non-rap tangent at some point or another.

^^^these dudes are creative producers but really really boring rappers

deej, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i was listening to a charles hamilton tape and the production was pretty cool if not a little corny but it's like he was purposefully trying not to flow or rap interestingly

i heard that 2nd album for the first time this year, and i was impressed! i like it even more than the first one. (though i haven't listened to the first album in a gazillion years.) 2nd album is much deeperdarkerthickerstronger.

this makes me sad

That was meant as more of a "I'd rather have a pancake for breakfast than a dry piece of toast, but neither of them comes close to a well-made Western omelette". i.e. - Jeezy is a boring, boring rapper. The only interesting tracks on his last album came from, imho, the interesting producers.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

did i already mention on ilm how much i liked that cool kids bake sale EP. i wanna hear their new album. um, not that they are space age. but they are, like, retro and shit. way better than any other retro shit i've heard. like the ugly duckling or jurassic five or whoever.

i completely forgot what this thread was about. sorry. i don't listen to none of these guys in the poll. they are pretty soft serve though. except for jimmy iovine. he's hardcore.

scott seward, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 23:02 (sixteen years ago)

tru

Ringtone Tycoon (The Reverend), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 23:03 (sixteen years ago)

kanye may align himself with a lot of this stuff but i don't really hear any of this subgenre's lesser lights trying to specifically follow in his footsteps...definitely more pharrell.

disagree about new hood rappers having less personality...the soft-serve guys are swift to package up a readymade "personality", or idea of personality, for people to jump on but that's not really sufficient. i still like kid sister though.

jeezy's lyrics on the recession were more interesting than his voice or the production (though those were great too).

i don't know why what kind of rap you listen to is always treated as some kind of rorschach test for what kind of person you are or what kind of life you'd like to lead. i listen to lots of types of raging id music besides gangsta/ignorant rap, and nobody's ever told me loving guns'n'roses is a symptom of my desire for the...white thug life or whatever you might call it.
