i think it's the act of listening that could be considered cynical. even though that's still quite bullshit

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

the act of listening to "slick pop" seen as "ironic" you "say"?

irony is dependent on other people seeing you listening. can you listen ironically at home by yourself?

Shh! It's NOT Me!, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

If you post about it ironically on a message board, yes...

what is inauthentic about cynicism, exactly? also why does authenticity matter?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 22:42 (sixteen years ago)

Is it cynical to imagine that otherwise intelligent people who listen to music you do not like could only possibly enjoy it in a cynical manner?

Moodles, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 23:56 (sixteen years ago)

Don't answer that question.

Moodles, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

OK!

Who says I don't like it?

Shh! It's NOT Me!, Tuesday, 2 December 2008 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know who, but I've been in situations where someone assumed that I could only possibly like something (Steely Dan, I'm looking at you!) in an ironic manner. Or worse, that I would only choose to listen in order to torture those around me.

Not true!

Also, acknowledging the inherent cheesiness of the music you like != listening ironically or cynically.

The phrase "cynical music" made me immediately think of Toto. Dunno if that helps.
