Radio Boy (Matthew Herbert) on Arte last night

Anybody else see it?

When I downloaded bits of the "album" I wasn't really taken with it. Yeah, interesting political statement about consumerism and all that, but the music didn't connect. Wow, it's all made by sampling the sound of a Big Mac being tossed into a bin, but you only know that because you're told as much, so what's the point? However, seeing it done live, with all the music literally created from scratch before your eyes* by sampling a single 'found' object (be it a cereal box, a TV tapped with hammer, or whatever) it made a lot more sense. (Which is kind of an interesting side question - can you only "trust" music when you can internally visualise its production? If you fooled by a sample into thinking it's an acoustic sound, does it matter? Is this a "real music by real musicians" hang-over in my subconscious? Eek!)

I should say there were some limitations for Radio Boy in a live context too: with only seconds available to create something interesting, Herbert tended to get something danceable going, so all the numbers had a broadly similar dynamic. Still, great fun.

(*this is an assumption on my part - did he in fact cheat and use pre-programmed sequences to create some of the sounds? Anyone?)

Oh, Björk & Matmos did a set too - it was okay.

Also, is Rob Cohen the most punchable presenter on TV or what?

i couldnt care less about his political statements, the "purity" of his production, what objects he uses to get his noises.. in fact i think it all just gives critics like yourself easy ammo to gun a guy who i rate as the most consistent, musical producer in electronic music at the moment.

bodily functions was far and away the best LP of last year

ive seen herbert live and it was breathtaking. herbert + danni siciliano = musical genius.

critics like yourself easy ammo to gun a guy...
pardon? who's gunning anyone?

(also 'Radio Boy' ≠ 'Herbert' of Bodily Functions. Plus, the politics is the primary point of Radio Boy, according to the interview he gave on the programme)

(to clarify the above, Herbert considers them separate personas)

I would agree with Jeff when it comes to Radio Boy's politics. I caught Herbert's studio visit on Mixing It a few weeks back and thought he was one of the most pompous, pretentious and ego-centric people I'd ever heard. He seems to think he can bring down the MacDonalds empire by crushing a Big Mac box on stage.

Deary me...

I downloaded the 'mechanics of destruction' album and suprise! the sound of oppressive soul-crushing corporate control is pretty much like kid606 without the jokes

"(to clarify the above, Herbert considers them separate personas)"

So how come when I paid READY MONEY to see "Herbert" I got 90% "Radio Boy"???

(yeah it's visually impressive but let's be honest he spends more than two minutes on most of the stuff he releases and in comparison it definitely shows)
