these dudes were pretty great. maybe they "are" pretty great, who knows, i haven't heard any of their stuff since "dead cities". i'm including 'tales of ephidrina' because it's them in all but name. i'm probably missing more recent shit, maybe people can fill me in on what's missing and what's good.

Dead Cities for sure

J0hn D., Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:45 (sixteen years ago)

Lifeforms prob best album but PNG far and away their best track

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

Lifeforms for me as well, very closely followed by Dead Cities

StanM, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

inspired by recently watching "deep cover" and laurence fishburne's bit of narration that was sampled on 'dead cities'

omar little, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

I would have voted for dead cities a few years back but since reinvesting in these dudes I would have to agree Lifeforms is definitely the best album
Accelerator's more like a collection of singles from early on, isn't it?

TOMBOT, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

has anyone heard these "environments" releases? they kinda sound like the river run stuff that underworld put out, in terms of release and concept, but i could be wrong.

omar little, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

"Slider" off of ISDN for best track btw

TOMBOT, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

accelerator reminds me of driving at night between upstate ny and chicago during my college years, i would listen to this and second toughest by underworld 3x each during the drive

omar little, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

j0hn d, confirm/deny any possible connection between tales of ephidrina song title and your own work

omar little, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

the Environments releases are good but a touch spotty. not as good as From the Archives 1 & 2, but worth having. i voted for Lifeforms but ISDN and the promo only ISDN:SHOW are phenomenal recordings.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

Globular Burst of Antistatic (Longform) is a great track. heard that on thanksgiving while i was sunk into the couch.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

Really tough ,but yes, dead cities

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 4 December 2008 19:44 (sixteen years ago)

FSOL is one band in which the EPs hold up as well as the the albums, and are sometimes longer. No poll would be complete without the Cascade (1993), Far-Out Son Of Lung And The Ramblings Of A Madman (1995), My Kingdom (1996), and We Have Explosive (1997) EPs. We're they included, Cascade would get my vote. Without them, I lean towards ISDN, simply because it has a spontanaity that was pro-Tooled out of existence on the other releases.

derelict, Thursday, 4 December 2008 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

I will always vote for the release that has PNG on it.

Ca-hoot na na na oh oh (HI DERE), Thursday, 4 December 2008 20:16 (sixteen years ago)

I never really connected the dots between all of their various works in the 90s but I've had Lifeforms in heavy rotation for a couple of years now, ever since I heard a few of the top songs woven into some keen DJ mixes. Of course, "Papua New Guinea" is one of the top songs of the 90s flat-out, but I also think "Calcium" deserves much more credit too, a song that I keep thinking I should be sick of by now but as of yet I'm not.

viborg, Friday, 5 December 2008 07:00 (sixteen years ago)

"We Have Explosive" seems to mark the advent of them listening to way too much Prodigy or something, though. I think I actually owned Dead Cities at one point and I all I can remember is that it was more along the lines of that song. The EPs sound really nice though...I didn't realize there were five parts to "Cascade"! And is "My Kingdom" more along the lines of "We Have Explosive" or closer to the earlier stuff?

viborg, Friday, 5 December 2008 07:03 (sixteen years ago)

"my kingdom" EP = so dope

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 5 December 2008 07:07 (sixteen years ago)

viborg: the My Kingdom ep is closer in sound to to their golden era than to We Have Explosive. There's some absorption of d n'b on one track, but little of the noisier big beat post-happy hardcore Prodigy flogged.

derelict, Friday, 5 December 2008 07:11 (sixteen years ago)

ISDN for me. in fact i like it so much i have both the "white" and the "black" version.

drone/a/sore, Friday, 5 December 2008 07:12 (sixteen years ago)

To add to the confusion, there's also a 7 part Lifeforms EP featuring Liz Frazier, in addition to the double album of the same name.

Also, I need to retract any implied recommendation on Far Out Son of Lung etc ep. Its just four extracts from the rerelease version of ISDN, two of which not appearing on the original limited release.

derelict, Friday, 5 December 2008 07:21 (sixteen years ago)

as much as i like Lifeforms and ISDN, i voted for Tales of Ephidrena. The summer of 93 that and Orbital's Brown album came out a few months apart; they both soundtracked a good six months of raving every weekend up and down the east coast and midwest. ToE was the best late-morning post-rave drive-home jam.

j0hn d, confirm/deny any possible connection between tales of ephidrina song title and your own work

no, but I do feel that kinda kinship - there was a period there when I just listened to dead cities all the damn time. and the remixes of "we have explosive," over and over.

J0hn D., Friday, 5 December 2008 09:09 (sixteen years ago)

I really need a copy of ISDN.

Shh! It's NOT Me!, Friday, 5 December 2008 10:12 (sixteen years ago)

I need a copy of ISDN, too.

I keep forgetting that I really love these guys.

Ca-hoot na na na oh oh (HI DERE), Friday, 5 December 2008 14:35 (sixteen years ago)

for a lover of music, I really have a very spotty purchasing record. there are a million great bands that I only have one album from. I think the gap between buying Loveless and Isn't Anything was almost ten years for me. At least ISDN is still in print, which is more than I can say for a lot of great electronic music.

also I blame Simon Reynolds for being such a good writer.

Shh! It's NOT Me!, Friday, 5 December 2008 20:59 (sixteen years ago)

I bought the ISDN ltd cd the day it came out. Got loads of their eps too and yes theyre great.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 5 December 2008 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

i spent most of the workday yesterday listening to the FSOL "similar artists" thing on last fm

omar little, Friday, 5 December 2008 21:04 (sixteen years ago)

as someone who only owns the above (minus the isness), tell me what FSOL i should seek out posthaste

omar little, Friday, 5 December 2008 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

Cascade and Lifeforms EP's, as mentioned above, are great. I really enjoyed the first 2 volumes of their From The Vaults series and think you would too.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 5 December 2008 21:20 (sixteen years ago)

there are a few live radio sessions (other than that great Peel Session) that should be heard too. i'll have to go home to check the specific dates but they shouldn't be hard to find online.
