RFI: Whatever happened to Tse Tse Fly?

A simple question really, a handful of good singles, an excellent album on Cherry Red and then nothing at all forever and ever. I even saw them live before they'd made any records, and they were rather good. But there's nothing on the Net, unless you mean the fly itself, and UBL has nothing except a link to how to buy the album. So... WHERE ARE THEY? What happened? Sigh...

Any answers?

At least three members (Paul Dorrington, Simon Cleave and Jayne Lockey) ended up in The Wedding Present in the early to mid-90s. Simon Cleave now plays guitar with Cinerama.

Doesn't surprise me that three members ended up in the Weddoes as I saw them supporting the Weds in late '92, and yep, another Leeds band. I felt they were somewhere in the gap between the Weds and Boyracer, with more of a LOUD quiet LOUD mentality. Rather good anyway.

three years pass...
I had read a review of them long ago, comparing the band (favorably) to the Swirlies. Bought a single, which I liked but never completely committed to, and which vanished during a move at some point. Noted a copy of the full length CD at Virgin in midtown NYC in the imports section, but it was expensive. For years, that copy sat there, untouched. At least I assume it was the same copy.

Of course, when I finally decided to buy it, it was gone, and it never seemed to make it to the top of my queue of things to mailorder. Was elated to find that this album (along w/a lot of other Cherry Red items that I could never *quite* bring myself to buy) has shown up on eMusic. Can't say it was exactly worth the wait, but does occasionally remind me of a somewhat gauzier 18th Dye. Nice to have closure, anyway. Kind of surprising how little there is about Tse Tse Fly on the net...

i found 'duckweed smuggled home' on ebay about a year ago, after about eight fruitless years of searching. that ep was definitely a staple of my later-era wnur shows.

Interesting...a search for "tse tse fly" + "duckweed" reveals:

Wow! I picked up the "Duckweed" EP from a second hand shop in Manchester in 1997, which had inside a handwritten letter from Jayne to a DJ at the Leeds radio station begging them to play it. A bit of a bonus.
