Torn between Haggard and Hall, but there are a bunch of other great ones, obviously...

This was quite a year for Charley Pride--all 3 of his #1s are great, though I prefer 'San Antoine.'

I guess Glen Campbell was on vacation in 1970. Gotta go with Hag.

jeeeezus. i don't even know all of these, but what a line-up. can't get with the hag -- great tune but my sympathies are too long-hair, and the assholes who loved that song when it came out are still out there somewhere forwarding obama-muslim emails. "san antone" is awesome, so's "week in a country jail." "tennessee birdwalk" is goofy as hell. love "sunday morning comin' down," but i think i love the kristofferson version more. "hello darlin'," "for the good times" and "coal miner's daughter" hardly need explication or championing. but i think i might come down to tammy doing her motown thing.

Seems like Sonny James was the dominant singles artist of that era and no one really gives a damn about him today. Country has always had a few artists who can hang in there for decades scoring top ten hits with every single they put out regardless of quality. I guess George Strait and Alan Jackson (and maybe Reba) are today's models.

The only one I've heard here is "Rose Garden", which I refuse to vote for. "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" is great, why wasn't it a country #1?

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 6 December 2008 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

For the Good Times

"Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" is great, why wasn't it a country #1?

I guess it wasn't considered Country by Billboard, or didn't get played on Country radio.

Isn't Charley Pride one of those guys who could actually go gold with a country album back in the day?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 00:05 (sixteen years ago)
