since the xmas playlist is on, which contains a lot of esquivel, i'll try to answer this in earnest now.

i genuinely like mid-century orchestral pop, despite recontextualization and repackaging. but since esquivel is quirky, the SAP 90s revival bunch proclaim him king, which often implies irony as the driving factor. to me, he's good -- often great -- but all that "oink oink" remains annoying.

i've always liked the three suns more, and to a degree, some of the more straight ahead (non exotica) les baxter stuff more than esquivel.

liking this stuff wasn't all "hey, look, i gots tiki mugs!", so fuck a trend.
