I was in Freebird Records in Dublin and I heard a country version of snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice". Came off surprisingly well. Anyone know who's responsible?

Phish

The Gourds did one. Snoop likes it.

Stuart, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's The Gourds. They're from Austin, I think. The MP3 that was going around was mislabelled as being by Phish. Would it've come off surprisingly well if Phish had done it?

I'm pretty sure Ween did that country version of "Gin 'n' Juice"-- it's totally amazing, maybe even better than the original.

...or, uh, maybe that cover was by the Gourds. The mix tape I have it on says that it's by Ween, but the MP3 my friend recorded it from could have been mislabeled as well. Either way, it's pretty fantastic.

Explain to me again why I should be upset about audiogalaxy disappearing.

btw, what's the version sung by the indie girls, y'know with 'smokin menthols'??

Ron, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard it was Colorado jam band Leftover Salmon! On pretty good authority, too. I don't like this cover, although the idea is interesting.

that would be Sissy Bar from Silverlake. saw them once, haven't thought much about them since.

That Sissy Bar version was AWFUL. Saw them once and I was cringing for weeks afterward. I think they broke up, hooray.

Arthur, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The "original" bluegrass cover is by the Gourds. I saw them do it live in '97 or '98. The idea has been stolen by numerous other artists.

I've got it appropriated to ween.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Gourds version...ppl just see it as a joke, but I think it's much more- it gets to the heart of the song (having fun and raising hell).

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a radio dj in berkley (90.7) just credited it to the gourds. the mystery deepens! tho it certainly doesnt have the funk of phish

Come back phish!

Dib Dub, Tuesday, 2 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Survey Says: The Gourds. Please see the Austin Chronicle's June 16, 2000 story (available online) about the confusion that has surrounded "Gin and Juice".

Ace Kabob, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My favorite cover of this was done by a little girl I sat next to once on the LIRR. She only did the chorus, but she turned the line "sippin' on gin & juice" into something sounding like "steppin' on Jerry Lewis."

Michael Daddino, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I got it as an MP3 when I was looking for some Ween songs. I always thought it was Ween but then I had a friend who told me he didn't think it was. Why is this so hard to find out?

Amber Clark, Monday, 8 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is the Goards. PERIOD! All those mp3's you have saying that it is Phish, or Ween is totally wrong. Rename it The Goards - Gin and Juice.mp3!! JEEZ!!

Jim Anderson, Tuesday, 9 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just make sure you spell it right! The Gourds! I'm retarded.. yes! ;)

scott, Thursday, 5 December 2002 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Snoop Dogg did the original. Anyone who doesn't believe me is a bit slow witted

Jim Anderson, Thursday, 5 December 2002 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i think covering rap songs has to have some kind of limit. i feel like one or two was about enough. heard a cover of 'around the way girl' done by dismemberment plan - it wasn't really workin. "it's been done"

i can understand why there are so many versions of gn'j - cuz the lyrics are awesome

three weeks pass...
this song is sang by Hank Williams III for sure without a doubt

Eric Shipley, Saturday, 1 February 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Beware though - I bought a Gourds album because one of the songs was entitled "Gangsta Lean" and I thought it would be a cover of the DRS classic... but its NOT.

phil-two, Saturday, 1 February 2003 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It's by the Gourds! My store carries it! I saw it last week! It says "Gin and Juice", right there, on the cover. Tell me which Hank Williams album it's on. Double dare you.
