Are we talking influence or effect here?
Philip K Dick has had a big impact.

many of quirky rocker beck's lyrics come from the cut-up techniques invented by beatnik poet william s burroughs in the 1970s!! also bob dylans parents named him after robert 'dylan' thomas.

also some rappers such as blackalicious, common, and even the beastie boys, make references to literature in their work.

i bet you didn't know this but rap classic "peter piper" is based on the childrens book classic about a little boy who never wanted to grow up.

jess, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes both direct influence and implicit analogies.

francesco, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cubalibre- both diesct inluence and implicit analogies...true p.k.d was enourmously influential in all the artistic domain but I can't find a strong link with music project or scenes..

there is no such thing as infulence so this thread is doomed

mark s, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh ethan my sides.

"thinkers hidden beyond different kinds of pop music" --> the definition of ILx yay!!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think he was into Booty Bass. Seriously (?), wasn't one Sonic Youth based on a Philip K Dick novel? Sister? I can't recall. Gibson has also been name-checked by them and others.
Pop art and fluxus also played an influene impact.
Harry Crews as well, but only a minor player. Lydia Lunch and Kim Gordon has a band named after him.

"Lines of flight" which allow you to take yourself elsewhere are better than links that bind things together. (© Deleuze) (sometimes it's a good idea to actually read and maybe even apply what some of these "thinkers" thought instead of just name-checking them eh?)

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cue: start bonus track on NWW's "Chance Meeting..."

tracer-maybe g.d. suffers gratuitous quoting more than others (this trend has a little faded lately) but in a way or in other it seems that people who quote him put in their artistic project some echo of his thoughts.... think, instead, of the idiotic post- industrial nazi folk ( sol invictus....) and his tratment on authors like junger or nietzsche

francesco, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no YOU think, instead, of US as the philosophers and necessary for all pop to exist! that's what i do, anyway

never heard sol invictus so it's hard for me to think about..... however i am just reminded of this. I can't say I see the connection with Deleuze, though.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Word on the 'street' is that KRS-One is (a) a philosopher and (b) thinks very deeply.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't say I see the connection with Deleuze, though.
Because he's hiding so well. From Mark S maybe? ;-)

cuba libre (nathalie), Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Word on the street is KRS-One is unrational and thinks our children grow up prisoners, all their life radio listeners.

J Blount, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and if i evah find him!!

mark s, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gary Numan / Philip K. Dick Sabbath and Zeppelin / Crowley L. Ron Hubbard / Himself (I refer to his BATTLEFIELD EARTH LP) The Alan Parsons Project / E.A. Poe Moby / Herman Melville (JUST KIDDING... sheesh)

And I heard that quirky rocker Sade was named after the Marquis de Sade. WOW!

Jody Beth Rosen, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there's an L. Ron Hubbard LP??!
