The memories. I had most of this stuff around at one point, in my 'goddammit WHY isn't there a new MBV album oh well these people all seem reasonable...'

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 December 2008 20:47 (sixteen years ago)

Movietone would take this just on the strength of The Blossom-Filled Streets, one of my favorite records of the past ten years

nabisco, Monday, 8 December 2008 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

3rd eye foundation!

cutty, Monday, 8 December 2008 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

FSA being first among equals, I'd have to say beyond them that Third Eye were my personal favorites, Amp the best overall band/collective (the many sideprojects are pretty much on par with the core Richard/Karine partnership), Movietone an underappreciated pleasure and Light my most regular standby to throw on the stereo as needed.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 December 2008 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

Definitely absolutely FSA.

Though sometimes I think I'm the only person in the world who likes Philosopher's Stone.

ian, Monday, 8 December 2008 20:56 (sixteen years ago)

You're not alone! (I consider that part of the Amp empire.)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 December 2008 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

I'm slightly embarassed for liking Movietone's debut so much. All those mumbly spoken word bits about "chessboard realities" and "music is the rope around your neck" are pretty over-the-top, but it's a perfect album for lying in bed on a foggy afternoon and feeling pensive. But yeah, they definitely found their niche a few years later with the ambient beach hippie schtick, and The Blossom-Filled Streets is my favorite of theirs.

sex organs of admittance (unregistered), Monday, 8 December 2008 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

imho Movietone are the poor man's Codeine.

ian, Monday, 8 December 2008 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

I got confused and thought that Bristol Palin had joined a post-rock band. :( :( :(

Mordy, Monday, 8 December 2008 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

Third Eye Foundation >>> FSA

"You Guys Kill Me" is spotty, but the other TEF albums are close to perfect

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 8 December 2008 21:04 (sixteen years ago)

Don't get the Movietone < Codeine bit at all ... maybe I haven't listened to enough Codeine, but they seem so vastly texturally different.

nabisco, Monday, 8 December 2008 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

FSA, 3rd Eye Foundation a close second. Dude from 3EF used to work in the sadly long-gone Revolver Records.

Neil S, Monday, 8 December 2008 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

3rd eye foundation/matt elliot kind of the same thing to me, anyway, him

akm, Monday, 8 December 2008 21:16 (sixteen years ago)

dude from 3EF used to work in FSA even

cutty, Monday, 8 December 2008 21:16 (sixteen years ago)

Meantime, I just got this in my inbox!

Hello Everyone

We have put together a new live album from a gig we did in 2006 in Darmstadt Germany. It is available from our website as a download for the modest price of £3. the album is called 'Oetinger Villa' and is a recording of the entire concert with a running time of well over 85 minutes.

Here is the link to the ampbase.net/shop page:
http://www.ampbase.net/shop/shopdetail.php?db=ampshop.csv&applykeys=true&thereco rd=65

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The film which we recently supplied the music for, is having its premier screening in Berlin
Germany this week!!!!

We think its a great, semi abstract road movie, that is both trippy and thought provoking,
(of course we would say that, having done the music for it:)))))))
In our humble opinion, its a must see slice of film and music collaboration.

'Interstate 5' is a film by Michael Maier,
with the soundtrack by Amp.

The film is being screened at the Gallery Tristesse deluxe, Berlin, Germany from the 19th december to 31st Janurary 2009 With the Opening on Friday 19th December at 7pm. the gallery is open mon-fri 10am-6pm.
Gallery address is: Wallstr 15, 10179 Berlin. web: www.galerietristesse.org tel: +49 163 2841165

If any of you are in the Berlin area, pop along to view the film if you can:)

Warmest Wishes to all

Amp

Hate to be Mr. Obvious, but I gotta go with FSA. Movietone, sure. AMP had their moments, too. I don't really remember the others well enough to distinguish them from one another (I may be confusing Philosopher's Stone with Alpha Stone, perhaps?). But, at the end of the day, FSA made one of the best albums of that decade (Further) and the rest of the bands didn't even come close to something like that.

D'Andrelo, the gay white ex-con (Pillbox), Monday, 8 December 2008 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

yeah it's great, but matt elliot's solo records are a cut above too, very different from the other albums. to me anyway.

akm, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

(nbsco, maybe it's an unfair comparison. i listened to one movietone album once (don't remember which) and it seemed like the hideous bastard child of tortoise and low.)

ian, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

Ha, that one I can almost see. Something like "Hydra," though ... could only be that in the best way.

nabisco, Monday, 8 December 2008 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

Voted FSA but I *think* 'You Guys Kill Me' is my favourite record to come out of this whole thing (don't find it spotty at all really). The Wigwam record of folk standards and the Foehn album 'Insideout Eyes' are both rad and unappreciated. Into most of the Movietone stuff. Tried and failed to get anything out of Crescent. AMP are alright but that 3CD comp of theirs that came out last year feels like way more than anyone needs to own. Hardly any of these guys play live or do anything much these days which is kind of weird and a shame altho Matt Elliott is touring in spring

The Biggest Event In The History Of Ethnic Comedy (DJ Mencap), Monday, 8 December 2008 22:47 (sixteen years ago)

I think the answer here might be Foehn.

straight outta Easter Compton (aldo), Monday, 8 December 2008 23:15 (sixteen years ago)

AMP when they were being drifty and not cut-price Bowery Electric with the trip-hop beats were rather lovely... but no FSA. It's the obvious vote but it has to be made.

van tussenvoegsel (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 11:32 (sixteen years ago)

This is effing hard, but in the end I must go with Third Eye Foundation instead of FSA. I love Movietone, Crescent and Amp as well, but the first two, to me, were groundbreaking.

It's strange though, as much as I love Matt Elliott's albums, his solo-input seems kind of out of place in this poll. Like DJ Mencap says, he's probably the only one left actively making music. The Bristol scene seems like a thing from the past.

WOODBINE

Michael B, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

Hey now, Le Bateau, I just posted that mailout from Amp and all! And Crescent's still releasing albums.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

3EF but also love crescent and FSA. and light and foehn were pretty good.

that AMP box set really, really changed my mind about them. for the better!

pierre some sugar henry (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

I know Ned, I didn't mean to show disrespect! And I still check out Crescent's new stuff, the news about a new Amp is great! But there was a certain 'vibe' to all those records released from these bands, early to late nineties, which truly made it a 'scene'. Those bands all were a team, in a figure of speech. But it's great to see some of them back.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 15:59 (sixteen years ago)

FSA always had beautifully produced vinyl products, didn't they. It was a pleasure to own one. Did their peers go in for this much?

Neil S, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 16:44 (sixteen years ago)

True, the records of Further, Distance, New Lands all have beautiful packaging. But this goes for 3EF as well, I think. The Ghost record looks, well, ghostly beautiful. It was pretty much after that one when the religious imagery started to kick in, but I enjoyed that as well.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

that first track on 3EF's Semtex is how i imagine the apocryphal mbv dnb album would sound.

but FSA by a country mile here. Distance has always been a fave and i picked up New Lands this year and it's lovely, fuzzy stuff. best listened to in the fog, with a headache.

koogs, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

that first track on 3EF's Semtex is how i imagine the apocryphal mbv dnb album would sound

Hahah, yep. That was exactly my reaction when I first heard it.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

Voted for FSA of course, but I want to give a couple of shouts to the first couple of Light singles. Quite good.

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 21:16 (sixteen years ago)

Crescent's song "Light Will Pour From Our Eyes" is one of my fave songs ever. This thread inspired me to listen to it again, and yep, really great.

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

Seconded, that song is gorgeous.

four years pass...

Movietone's Sand and the Stars turns 10 this week. Does anybody know what happened to them? It drives me nuts when bands just fade away without a break-up announcement

As for bands who have persisted -- Amp just put out a retrospective live album:

https://soundinsilencerecords.bandcamp.com/album/switched-on-and-live

Switched On And Live is an impressive collection of live recordings covering different periods of Amp history, from mid-90s to mid-00s. Starting from the full band line up of 1995 including Charff, Walker, Elliott and Jones, to live shows performed by the duo of Charff and Walker during 1998-1999 and finally to a 2003 full band performance by Charff, Walker, Skinner and Challans.
The recordings have been restored and mastered by Richard Amp to bring the Amp live experience to life.

Meanwhile they say they're about finished on a new album, and three new tracks from it are up on SoundCloud:

Chris Cole/Manyfingers was surely one of the first doing looper-based solo sets. He had an album out last year which I am just checking. Dave Callahan is on it.

Movietone's...ambient beach hippie schtick

that description p much sums up why I love Day & Night so much. The following two just felt like more of the same but I literally haven't heard either in over a decade. Should revisit. In my memory this is still one of my favorite bands

Yer welcome -- new album in March! This is the final one with Karine -- not sure if she's flat out retired as such or just wants to do her own thing from here on in. Good long run, though!
