Poll Results

OptionVotes
France - filterdisco, impressionist classical dudes, Vanessa Paradis, Serge Gainsbourg, songs with girls going 'fa fa f 37
Italy - Piano house, hi-NRG, Moroder, loads of opera, 60s crooners, power-ballads 11

Matt DC, Monday, 8 December 2008 23:51 (sixteen years ago)

I left italo-disco out of the Italy option but that should be obvious. There should be a third 'fa' at the end of France as well.

Matt DC, Monday, 8 December 2008 23:51 (sixteen years ago)

Edith Piaf? Boris Vian? Jaques Brel?

Ennio Morricone? Piero Umiliani? Mina? Rita Pavone?

STILL GEETIKA IN 2009 (PappaWheelie V), Monday, 8 December 2008 23:52 (sixteen years ago)

Does music produced in France by former colonies count here? Cuz that would seem to me to make this poll rather one-sided.

Alex in SF, Monday, 8 December 2008 23:55 (sixteen years ago)

vietnamese music kicks ass

STILL GEETIKA IN 2009 (PappaWheelie V), Monday, 8 December 2008 23:55 (sixteen years ago)

No colonies allowed.

Matt DC, Monday, 8 December 2008 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

Even if the music was made and mostly consumed in France?

Alex in SF, Monday, 8 December 2008 23:58 (sixteen years ago)

Oh hang on I misread that, anything produced from within France is fine.

Matt DC, Monday, 8 December 2008 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

and moroder...does he count in both the germany and italy polls?

STILL GEETIKA IN 2009 (PappaWheelie V), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

don't forget prog-rock. lots of good ones from both countries. but france just leads.

Magma vs. Goblin

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 00:10 (sixteen years ago)

Italy kind of walks this, although France are finally starting to catch up since the late 90s.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 01:07 (sixteen years ago)

ondes martenot, maurice ravel, claude debussy, olivier messiaen, lili boulanger, francoise hardy, jacques brel, brigitte fontaine, pierre schaeffer, serge gainsbourg, france gall, claude le jeune, darius milhaud, henriette renié, alain goraguer, germaine tailleferre, arthur honegger, jean-jacques perrey, guy reibel, musique concréte, tristan murail, pierre henry, guillaume de machaut, andre jolivet, josquin desprez, monsieur de sainte-colombe, francois couperin, jean-phillipe rameau, micheline coulombe saint-marcoux, gabriel fauré, henri dutilleux, paul dukas, francis poulenc, edgard varese, maurice duruflé, gérard grisey...

Turangalila, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 02:37 (sixteen years ago)

Turangalila, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 04:32 (sixteen years ago)

don't forget about afro/cosmic music on the italian side of things.

i don't think much could beat out berio, moroder, or goblin for me.

unless the actuel label counts?

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 04:48 (sixteen years ago)

France because Italy trading too much on past glories

I'll pick France because of Lard Free, Fille Qui Mousse, Red Noise...but of course football is an entirely different matter.

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 11:26 (sixteen years ago)

I remember quite well the afternoon I saw it. I was a highly impressionable 7-year old boy and they scared the hell out of me.

Marco Damiani, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 11:30 (sixteen years ago)

I had Italy in the FT Euro 2008 of music, and from what I can see, there is virtually no good Italian pop music from the last 15 years, give or take a decent MC or two. Lots of ska punk though. Italy briefly on top during the 80s and early 90s but otherwise its France all the way.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 11:42 (sixteen years ago)

Always liked this dude, even if he does look like James Brown (alive loathsome one, not dead good one):

Its strange how Italy now seems to be in the same limbo France was in during the 70s-80s. These two countries seem to have swapped places sometime in the late 80s.

Although, France did have Rita Mitsouko in the 80s

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 13:02 (sixteen years ago)

this is really no match on the music side (on food, wine, landscape/cities, culture, girls or football, that would be harder !).

Yes, and it's French and it's one of the countless reasons to love France musically.

"Its strange how Italy now seems to be in the same limbo France was in during the 70s-80s"

Don't know about France in the 80's, but these days Italy is musically almost dead - there are a couple of lucky exceptions, but most of our so-called artists are crap.

Marco Damiani, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 14:03 (sixteen years ago)

Turangalila didn't even include Berlioz!

Italy has Jovanotti of course!

sam500, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, he's here and doesn't want to leave.

Marco Damiani, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

Does he have any credibility? My mate used to like him soley because Gianluca Vialli used to listen to him - or something.

Italian food counts for a lot in my book. Also, Italians seemed a lot friendlier to me when I was in Europe.

I really like Italy and aspects of Italian culture but i don't think my vote will come as a surprise to anyone here.

Italy. Mainly because of Paolo Conte

A Jetpack Operation (Cliftonb), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 10:43 (sixteen years ago)

Quite obviously, for a long time Paolo Conte was more appreciated in France than Italy.
