STILL GEETIKA IN 2009 (PappaWheelie V), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

bon cuz he is from wisconsin

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

Fleet Foxes are like Thomas Kinkaide. Exquisite detail applied to the most boring subject matter imaginable.

Bon Iver. At least he seems to like what he does.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

bon iver for the hint of r&bness he has.

goole, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

autotune, even!

goole, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

Where is of Montreal on this list?

A REAL GOON (The Reverend), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

I had never heard of Bon Ivor until Thanksgiving when my 14 year old cousin was all "oh, surely you know this guy!" and played me some of his stuff and it sounded tepid and artificial.

ian, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:26 (sixteen years ago)

you are wrong ian

cutty, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

14 year old cousin knows what's up

cutty, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

bon iver = tv on the radio + john frusciante solo work

cutty, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

you know me better than to think that's going to appeal to me, cuddly.

ian, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:32 (sixteen years ago)

honestly, i didn't like it on first listen either.

i'd expect you to appreciate his wisconsin-log-cabin-in-the-woods schtick. it works.

cutty, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:34 (sixteen years ago)

does the idea that it works really justify this much hype (based on EOY lists) tho?

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

you live in britain

goole, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

i have it on my end of the year list, so i guess it does.

cutty, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

and you live in britain, do you even know where wisconsin is?

cutty, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

Canadia, you fucks

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

Definitely Bon Iver - I saw him do an instore at Rough Trade and it's in my top 3 or 4 favorite shows of the year. Just really, really pretty. Beautiful weird lyrics, too. "I wear my garment so it shows... gluey feathers on the flume..."

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 11 December 2008 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

i guess i should check this dude out since he's a local boy

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Thursday, 11 December 2008 00:17 (sixteen years ago)

I liked the Talk Talk cover I saw him do at Pitchfork Fest.

jaymc, Thursday, 11 December 2008 00:19 (sixteen years ago)

Yawn Iver

whawazzatIfellasleepandmustamizzedit

um,

staggerlee, Thursday, 11 December 2008 03:46 (sixteen years ago)

i liked the bon iver album when i got it. i must listen to it again. i cant even get halfway with the fleet foxes album though. zzzzzzzzz.

Michael B, Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:07 (sixteen years ago)

heard that bon iver album last week when someone made me listen to it in their car. 'nice' i suppose, but seemed a bit fake with the niceness. the backstory behind how the the album got made seemed to be what won my friend over but even that seemed like a load of shit.

titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

huh i guess i should out bon iver then

Tanganyika laughter epidemic (gbx), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

i want the last four minutes of my life back

Tanganyika laughter epidemic (gbx), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

haha

i think british people are overstating the importance of self-recording in a cabin in the middle of nowhere in the winter. it's not like this mythic thing, it's really no big deal at all.

goole, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:32 (sixteen years ago)

it's better than going crazy and turning a bunch of local girls into furniture, you know

Tanganyika laughter epidemic (gbx), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

NME would go nuts for that story too

goole, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

it didnt really sound like it was recorded in a little cabin either. i know these days you can do a pretty good recording wherever you are but if theyre making such a big deal out of the cabin thing, they could at least make it sound less 'professional'.

titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

maybe the people making a big deal about the cabin thing are not the ones responsible for the recording.

goole, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

one of my friends recorded a great album in a northern wisconsin cabin last year (seriously), i bet he's pissed.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

no. wisc ain't big enough for the two of 'em

Tanganyika laughter epidemic (gbx), Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

honestly, the purported recording method of bon iver should not eclipse the music itself. it's great shit.

cutty, Thursday, 11 December 2008 15:44 (sixteen years ago)

albums recorded in cabins - S/D

OT motherfuckin' M my friend, you nailed it. Record an entire album in a hot tub, or while working the grill at a family barbeque, and I'll be impressed

These two bands (and throw Band of Horses in there too) and subsequent inexplicable hype are what made 2008 such a lousy year for music. Indie kids get stupider every year.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Thursday, 11 December 2008 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

but i like the record a lot! doesn't matter how it was put together or where. it's just not a big deal to hole up in a cabin in wisconsin.

the chef (emeril lagasse ha ha) (J0rdan S.), Friday, 12 December 2008 03:20 (sixteen years ago)

bon iver has a better and more expressive voice than the fleet foxes dudes, and it's cool that he tours with his younger brother

the chef (emeril lagasse ha ha) (J0rdan S.), Friday, 12 December 2008 03:24 (sixteen years ago)

Great on Letterman last night, btw.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 12 December 2008 07:42 (sixteen years ago)

Someone reference the autotune upthread, which I thought was a joke, but apparently he does it on the upcoming e.p.

Savannah Smiles, Friday, 12 December 2008 14:25 (sixteen years ago)

Bon Iver is so fucking awful.

Turangalila, Friday, 12 December 2008 21:23 (sixteen years ago)

Bon Iver - not awful - but certainly not as great as lazy journos make out.

It's laughable the way this log cabin wank allegedly defines music at it's '08 best.

Is this it?

Surely Fleet Foxingtons were way superior. They used verb.zzzzzzzzzzz
