see STP may be no more of a landslide here than Nirvana in the other thread but at least that thread has the appearance of a kind of level playing field. fuck outta here with Bush.

the ref (denis leary ha ha) (some dude), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 18:59 (sixteen years ago)

I can't imagine STP not winning

Indiespace Administratester (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

amazing how getting older means previous decades are all like, different every 6 months and each minor change is big, but now, 5 years pass and I don't notice major changes

in other words, i think of these two bands being different eras

STILL GEETIKA IN 2009 (PappaWheelie V), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

xxp: I was going for grungeternative bands with great, enormously popular singles and useless albums. I picked Bush.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:04 (sixteen years ago)

You and Gwen Stefani will be very lonely on this poll.

Ca-hoot na na na oh oh (HI DERE), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:09 (sixteen years ago)

I'm willing to give Bush a few pretty good and underrated singles, especially later overblown things like "Cold Contagious," "Greedy Fly" and "Letting The Cables Sleep." And "Machinehead" has a pretty great sound. But STP has enough material to fill a good mix CD - off the top of my head I enjoy:

Interstate Love Song
Plush
Wicked Garden
Pop's Love Suicide
Tripping On A Hole In A Paper Heart
Lady Picture Show
Big Bang Baby
No Way Out
Vasoline

And then add, you know, whatever other tracks you're into - I can dig "Big Empty" and "Sour Girl" in the right mood. I think "Hello Hello" can count too, honestly. Not as terrible a band as their image and posturing would imply.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

i never thought i could ever vote for STP in any poll...... Now I can.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

Among my high school friends, these bands were equally lame.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

The Big Bang Baby riff shocked me into thinking they might not suck for a minute. Something Bush could never achieve.

bendy, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

on the one hand we have a bunch of reasonably competent songwriters and musos who logically hit their stride come record number 2. on the other we have some lads who pulled a farce on a public who confused themselves that tired-nirvana-retread was a substitute for the real thing.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 04:47 (sixteen years ago)

STP were Beatles nuts posing as grunge rockers to buy their way into the game.

Bush didn't really hit their stride until they'd absorbed Radiohead. But "The Chemicals Between Us" and "Letting The Cables Sleep" are ace.

No question which band is more accomplished, but if you're not thinking twice before you vote, you're not thinking.

Passenger 57 (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 04:58 (sixteen years ago)

Now what about Spacehog?

Passenger 57 (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 04:58 (sixteen years ago)

gavin rossdale fucked gwen stefani which is better than anything stp pulled off

goole, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 05:13 (sixteen years ago)

good video tho:

goole, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 05:15 (sixteen years ago)

but royston langdon nabbed Liv Tyler, so you're kind of giving Spacehog the inside track here

Passenger 57 (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 05:15 (sixteen years ago)

Right now, Collective Soul is feeling pretty left out.

D'Andrelo, the gay white ex-con (Pillbox), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 05:17 (sixteen years ago)

I pick bush since I feel that their singles are more enjoyable than stp singles.

❤ⓛⓞⓥⓔ❤ (CaptainLorax), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 05:20 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, Bush towards the beginning were a better singles band, but they never put out an album like Tiny Music.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 05:28 (sixteen years ago)

Right now, Collective Soul is feeling pretty left out.

But they have no good songs...

billstevejim, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 06:00 (sixteen years ago)

big bang baby is great!

stp a million times over.

Q: Why was the mushroom so popular? A: He was a fungi (latebloomer), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 06:09 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, bush had a few alright songs, but most of STP's singles were golden. Never heard an album by either band though.

askance johnson, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 06:28 (sixteen years ago)

I think I like "Swallowed" best out of the catalog from either band. A fun Pixies rip-off.

Savannah Smiles, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 11:03 (sixteen years ago)

Now what about Spacehog?

I had to search youtube to figure out who this even was. I had completely forgotten about that song of theirs. They sound more like britpop than grunge though.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:14 (sixteen years ago)

Going for Bush here because they had a couple of nice songs (kind of like "Glycerine" at least) while STP had absolutely nothing.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 14:19 (sixteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Thursday, 11 December 2008 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

this is actually really difficult. from my experience, Bush were on the radio a lot for about three years, but more or less disappeared after that. Scott Weiland stuck around forever (and STP is still played heavily on local rock station). I can concede that "Big Bang Baby" and "Tripping on a Hole..." are far better than anything Bush ever did, the collection of "Everything Zen", "Comedown", "Machinehead", "Glycerine", and "Swallowed" are much less annoying than every other thing STP released.

Bush it is.

Gukbe, Thursday, 11 December 2008 01:41 (sixteen years ago)

Bush

redmond, Thursday, 11 December 2008 01:42 (sixteen years ago)

I never got why so many people made such a big deal of 3rd-rate Nirvana plagiarists like Bush. But, then again, that was long before Puddle of Mudd..

STP, on the other hand, moved quickly past their ill-fitting grunge jones to become the ace glam-pop singles band they always were at heart. I've never heard their full-lengths, but if any post-Core single comes on the radio, count me in for volume-cranking & steering-wheel drumming.

STP in a heartbeat.

D'Andrelo, the gay white ex-con (Pillbox), Thursday, 11 December 2008 01:49 (sixteen years ago)

zomg, just watched 2 bush videos. I WANT TO CHANGE MY VOTE! HOW COULD I 4GET???

Gukbe, Thursday, 11 December 2008 01:51 (sixteen years ago)

I never got why so many people made such a big deal of 3rd-rate Nirvana plagiarists like Bush. - o wait, I forgot about the heart-throb. Cute band alert!

D'Andrelo, the gay white ex-con (Pillbox), Thursday, 11 December 2008 01:53 (sixteen years ago)

Gavin > Weiland
Weiland is a massive douche with a crappy voice, as evidenced by his 'career' with Velvet Revolver. Gavin at least wrote all the songs, Weiland needed the Deleo bros to write all the hits.

redmond, Thursday, 11 December 2008 02:27 (sixteen years ago)

That just makes them a more convincing shiny glam act though!

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 11 December 2008 02:46 (sixteen years ago)

yeah who gives a fuck who wrote STP's songs if they had better songs (which they did)

That's pretty subjective. Most of STP's do nothing for me, whereas there are a couple Bush songs I don't turn off when they come on the radio.

redmond, Thursday, 11 December 2008 04:48 (sixteen years ago)

If Gavin didn't sound like Gavin, Bush would own this. I dug just about all their riffs. But the Tiny Music singles are a lot more listenable than anything with Gavin's mouth on it.

Werewolves!

da croupier, Thursday, 11 December 2008 04:54 (sixteen years ago)

holy shit i totally blocked the existence of the Bush remix album out of my memory

the rev (al sharpton ha ha) (some dude), Thursday, 11 December 2008 05:11 (sixteen years ago)

And the "Mouth" remix is an improvement! How the fuck!

didnt vote cuz no option for 'syphilis'

siskin/skulls, Friday, 12 December 2008 21:42 (sixteen years ago)

I FAIL ANOTHER MUSIC POLL

❤ⓛⓞⓥⓔ❤ (CaptainLorax), Friday, 12 December 2008 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

I know very little about STP's actual story, but I always thought of them as the "fake" grunge band that was actually musically better than the "real" grunge bands.

Indiespace Administratester (Hurting 2), Friday, 12 December 2008 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

Voting in this would've been like choosing between a band that named itself after a brand of motor oil and a band that named itself after pussy.

Leee, Saturday, 13 December 2008 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

WTF Julie Delpy.

sad man in him room (milo z), Sunday, 14 December 2008 00:51 (sixteen years ago)

Leee, you do know what STP stands for, right? You don't have to choose!

Passenger 57 (rogermexico.), Sunday, 14 December 2008 03:06 (sixteen years ago)

julie delpy did a werewolf movie, watch that.

I didn't vote but bush strikes me as harmless and scott weiland is totally fucking atrocious

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 14 December 2008 03:48 (sixteen years ago)

catchiest/best STP songs unmentioned here: "unglued," "tumble in the rough."

I didn't vote, but they deserved to win by a mile (which I guess they did.)

xhuxk, Sunday, 14 December 2008 04:32 (sixteen years ago)

I think STP's inability to be a very good grunge band is exactly why they haven't dated as badly as some 90s bands. They wrote pretty straight-forward catchy hard rock songs.

Great unmentioned STP song: 'I got you'

iatee, Sunday, 14 December 2008 05:19 (sixteen years ago)

Not an unpleasant track, but I love how the YouTube thumb highlights the goofiest part of the song. "All the slipping that I slap me"??
