Taking Sides: Pearl Jam - "Hail, Hail" vs. Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

I found the general band question too hard to answer, cause my thoughts are too scattered, but howsabout this? The former song I believe to be Pearl Jam's finest moment, the latter suffers from overkill, but back when it didn't it to my mind kicked in a comparable fashion. Interested to see which finds favour.

I am relatively certain I have never heard "Hail Hail" before ever.

Ca-hoot na na na oh oh (HI DERE), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 21:17 (seventeen years ago)

hail hail by far. i don't need to hear smells like teen spirit ever again. maybe if i could approach them both with fresh ears it might be different, but as is, overexposure sucked any enjoyment out of slts a long time ago.

"Hail, Hail" catches me by surprise every time I hear it (which isn't often).

Kind of an odd choice for Pearl Jam's finest moment - it's great piledriving rock but not really their signature song or anything like that.

Right this second, though, I'd much rather hear it than SLTS - but that could also just be from being unbelievably burned out on the former by 1997 or so.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

yeah wtf is this shit...I love Pearl Jam way more than Nirvana, No Code is my favorite album of theirs, and I'd be happy to never hear "Teen Spirit" again, and I still wouldn't vote for "Hail Hail."

ah, THAT'S why I never heard this song

Jeremy vs Teen Spirit may have been interesting. 2 songs people may be burned out on.

"Lithium" vs "Better Man"

Taking Sides: Pearl Jam - "Bugs" vs. Nirvana's - "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter"

i think "hail hail" is strikingly fabulous, not their most well-known song no, but for me about as good as they get.

This thread is like:

The Cure - "Just Like Heaven" vs Siouxsie and the Banshees - "Mirage"

Ca-hoot na na na oh oh (HI DERE), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i mean...polls that position something super well known vs. something comparatively obscure are interesting and cute in theory, but ultimately you just get a really predictably lop-sided result and a lot of confused responses.

the ref (denis leary ha ha) (some dude), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 21:30 (seventeen years ago)

well, maybe mere cuteness is my priority?

Taking Sides: Pearl Jam - "Bugs" vs. Nirvana's - "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter"

This one should be a no-brainer.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 05:56 (seventeen years ago)

First of all, I don't buy the overplayed argument. If something is truly brilliant, it should stand however many times y0ou hear it. If you've heard a song so often that it's spoiled your enjoyment then
a) get a bigger music collection, b) hang out somewhere cooler where they don't have it on rotation
Secondly, Teen Spirit is a unique piece of music. Unsettling, hilarious lyrics. A sense of humour, a two-note guitar figure and a great, thrashing riff, a voice to die for.
Hail Hail is ordinary, dreary, dull rock music.

hail hail is a thoroughly mediocre and uninspired romp through run of the mill hard rock terrain
smells like teen spirit is a chore to listen to these days for obvious reasons, but is fundamentally a strong track

Charlie Howard, Friday, 12 December 2008 06:27 (seventeen years ago)

lol "Hail, Hail" did surprisingly well! at this point I expect the same ratio for the big N/PJ poll.
