Six degrees of Music

You know the drill. (A variation perhaps: Six Degrees of AMG, in which you try to get from one band to another using only preexisting links. And we all have nothing better to do, apparently.)

Portishead to Lamb. (Harder than you think for bands so supposedly close to one another.)

Perhaps this is of interest - a Stephin Merritt-centric version of the game: http://stephinsongs.wiw.o rg/game.html

Hmmm.

Portishead recorded a live album in New York, whilst New York, New New Tork was by...

Frank Sinatra, which was a single by... Cake , who, on the Virgin trains playlist for Winter 2002, were followed by... Lamb

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Am I meant to set one for the next guy? Eh... Phi Life Cypher to Adriano Celentano.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah forgot to say whoever gets one can set up the next.

BTW, my own Lamb to Portishead: Portishead remixed UNKLE on "The Time Has Come" EP, which Plaid also did remixes for. Plaid have also remixed Goldfrapp's Utopia; Goldfrapp appear on The Princess + The Warrior soundtrack, on which Lamb singer Lou Rhodes sings. Huzzah!

Portishead to Lamb: Portishead is from the UK, as is... Lamb.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to work in Portishead. On the journey to work I passed some Lambs.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can spell Portishead and I can also spell Lamb.

Marc, Wednesday, 29 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The best I can do without looking is: Lamb have been remixed by Kruder & Dorfmeister, who have remixed Depeche Mode. Depeche Mode have been remixed by Portishead.

If we're done with Lamb, I reissue my challenge from last time we did this:
Neil Reid to So Solid Crew

Jeff W, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Neil Reid lives on planet earth which So Solid Crew also do.

Not too impressed by that site, at least from the first sets of artists i asked it to link. Like, from this post upthread:

Frank Sinatra, which was a single by... Cake , who, on the Virgin trains playlist for Winter 2002, were followed by... Lamb

i asked SixDegreesOfBlackSabbath to find a path from Frank Sinatra to Cake; it came up with:

- Frank Sinatra performed with Bing Crosby on the song Mister Booze and 181 others.
- Bing Crosby performed with David Bowie on the song Peace on Earth / Little Drummer Boy and 49 others.
- David Bowie performed with Trent Reznor on the song Warszawa and 17 others.
- Trent Reznor was a member of Pigface
- Pigface had member Duane Denison
- Duane Denison was a member of Firewater
- Firewater had member Yuval Gabay
- Yuval Gabay was a member of Homie
- Homie had member Greg Brown
- Greg Brown was a member of Cake

Not too impressive given there's a much more direct route:

- Cake covered "What's Now Is Now", a song originally recorded by Frank Sinatra on Watertown

Likewise, it took eleven links to connect the Eagles to the Velvet Underground, a connection I could make in only three steps (i.e. "Take It Easy" written by Jackson Browne, who also wrote songs for Nico). What's odd is that it could connect the Eagles to Jackson Browne in three steps, and Jackson Browne to VU in three steps, but it couldn't follow its own links to connect Eagles to VU in six degrees or less.

Also, it seems at least 40% of the bands I asked it to link passed through "We Are The World"....

It took 9 connections to connect Weird Al Yankovic to Michael Jackson.

So far the answer is a 'no' from me

paolo, Thursday, 7 July 2016 10:41 (nine years ago)

Here is how Xasthur and Pink are connected:

'A National Acrobat' by Xasthur is a cover of 'A National Acrobat' by Black Sabbath

'War Pigs' by Black Sabbath was sampled in 'Oh No' by Girl Talk

'Don't Stop' by Girl Talk sampled 'U + Ur Hand' by Pink
