And again, Portishead.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:21 (sixteen years ago)

wtf at 3 MGMT songs in the top 5.

ianmaxwell, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:29 (sixteen years ago)

i like about 23 of these

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:32 (sixteen years ago)

holy fuck its sam sparro!

still think mgmt are a less funny flight of the concords

straightola, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:32 (sixteen years ago)

oh missed blind.

straightola, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:33 (sixteen years ago)

Portishead, with honourable mentions to MIA, Santogold and Nick Cave. Predictably a mostly horrible list.

'Wearing My Rolex'

Surprised by how *little* of this I've heard actually, pretty much all these tracks will inevitably be described as "unavoidable" by someone somewhere

The Biggest Event In The History Of Ethnic Comedy (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

"Wearing My Rolex"

This was the year when even the wussiest palest indie rock I fucked with no longer had any crossover with the NME. No "International xTweecorex Underground", no credibility.

Seanadams Molloy (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:44 (sixteen years ago)

whither the mezzaterra

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:46 (sixteen years ago)

Did the NME even fuck with HMHB during their brief period as the brutes of C86?

Seanadams Molloy (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 13:47 (sixteen years ago)

um, in what way?

Tried to anoy them, no.

Give them much coverage and praise, yeah.

Paper Planes, a ringer from 2007

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

Space and the Woods or Focker? How am I supposed to decide? Toss a coin? Give a toss?

Does the world really need that many MGMT singles? Honestly...

The All-Singing All-Dancing Unstoppable Kate (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 14:45 (sixteen years ago)

FOCKER!

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 14:52 (sixteen years ago)

I had a sock puppet vote for each, but I do actually think that FOCKER is the better track. Do I have a third sock puppet? I have a funny feeling I might. I can no longer keep track.

I'm going to have a wank and if I fap on Sam Eastgate, I'll vote FOCKER and if I fap on Sam Potter, I'll vote Space and the Woods*.

*I am obviously joking. This is obviously anatomically impossible for me, as a female.

The All-Singing All-Dancing Unstoppable Kate (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 14:55 (sixteen years ago)

A fair few of these are decent - two way fite between Rolex and Blind for me though.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 14:59 (sixteen years ago)

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I HAVE THE CARROT CAKE FOR LUNCH!!!!

The All-Singing All-Dancing Unstoppable Kate (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 15:01 (sixteen years ago)

stop eating carrot cake all the time

Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 15:04 (sixteen years ago)

focker is 30 seconds shorter than space and the woods = win. (whitesnake is unbelievably shorter at just under 3 mins- it lasts aaaages in my head)

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

i don't even care any more, but i just have so much...pity and contempt for people with taste like that.

('rolex' duhhh)

lex pretend, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

were you ever one of "those people?"

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 16:21 (sixteen years ago)

Get you, Dennis Norden.

straight outta Easter Compton (aldo), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 16:24 (sixteen years ago)

it's easily paper planes, but uh, where are the pop songs?

k3vin k., Wednesday, 10 December 2008 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

rolex

you brought me home to this funky house (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 17:23 (sixteen years ago)

But but but I LIIIKE carrot cake, it's the only mind-altering drug I get to take any more.

I did recently find a video of the keyboard player from LOTP, eating carrot cake, up a tree, and spouting bollocks about the apocalypse, which only made me love them more.

But, erm, yes, I think FOCKER seems to do even MORE in 30 seconds less, so it is WINRAR.

I understand this list even less than the albums list. What is the point of MGMT? What, I ask of you, is the point of Glasvegas? I didn't even get the point of Santogold, and that was one of those albums that *should* have had my name all over it. What am I failing to see?

The All-Singing All-Dancing Unstoppable Kate (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 17:55 (sixteen years ago)

What's the point of anything when we're all going to die anyway?

Matt DC, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

Oh don't start me on that when I'm on carrot cake comedown.

I mean, what is it in this musics that makes people want to listen to it? But, yeah, de gustibus, etc. I guess it's just weird that it's such a non-pop singles list. But it isn't singles any more, is it, it's just random tracks for download.

The All-Singing All-Dancing Unstoppable Kate (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 18:03 (sixteen years ago)

nme wants to get down wiv der kidz

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 11 December 2008 00:05 (sixteen years ago)

nme more wants to get down with the industry!

Mark G, Thursday, 11 December 2008 08:41 (sixteen years ago)

List needs more Blackout Crew.

NickB, Thursday, 11 December 2008 09:19 (sixteen years ago)

'Blind' must win this... so I voted for "LES Artistes"

zeus, Thursday, 11 December 2008 11:09 (sixteen years ago)

Those MGMT records have been more ubiquitous than most actual pop singles this year.

Matt DC, Thursday, 11 December 2008 11:17 (sixteen years ago)

I've heard (and can recall) maybe four of these. Dizzee ahead of Sam Sparro.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 11 December 2008 11:56 (sixteen years ago)

i dont even remember hearing that oasis song

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 12 December 2008 00:03 (sixteen years ago)

wiley's a vote-getting guy and she knows it

BLAP BLAP (Roberto Spiralli) (sic), Friday, 12 December 2008 00:20 (sixteen years ago)

I am v. close to being in the Wiley pile, but I went wet: Two Doors Down. yes, retro 80s semi-indie pop (tho' not lol retro I think), but I just really like it.
So when that has a vote, that's this by-and-large lurker.

woofwoofwoof, Friday, 12 December 2008 00:31 (sixteen years ago)

nme is lame

Young Love. E.R.O.L.

elgolfo, Friday, 12 December 2008 07:46 (sixteen years ago)

It's kind of remarkable how every year for the past few years, the NME year-end lists consistantly make the previous year seem terrible.. at least since 2006.

I mean.. "Two Doors Down" is okay, but seriously? #3?? There are about 10 songs on Made In The Dark that are better than "Ready For The Floor." The Last Shadow Puppets are terrible. etc etc

billstevejim, Saturday, 13 December 2008 07:15 (sixteen years ago)
