young mc 'bust a move' vs. tone loc - 'funky cold medina'

they are conjoined twin songs that only ever get played consecutively (at my workplace anyway) (much like 'wake me up before you go go' + 'footloose'). but like conjoined twins, even though they have their points of intersection, they are entirely different beasts with their own fierce personalities, different choice of haircut etc.

personally, i prefer the tone loc song, for its dry cigarette n whiskey voice-ness (including the guitar riffage), and the break down. also because tone loc is now on a sitcom late at night. bust a move loses points for having been danced to by bill gates.

alternately, you can talk about other songs that have been inextricably tied together in dj sets.

dust brothers vs. dust brothers. since marvin young wrote tone-loc's rhymes, I gotta go with "bust a move", the best single the dust brothers ever produced (Beck and the Beasties aren't even in the top five).

funky cold every time

but what about if you put that up against MC Hammer?

Come, this is like being forced to choose between your children, or something like that. I want a mix-tape of songs like this.

Young MC all day long. "Food is served, and you're stone cold munchin'" gets me every time. Also, the "Sheena" verse of "Wild Thing" is some of YMC's most phoned-in writing.

Of "Funky Cold Medina" I mean.

The use of "Hot Blooded" in "Funky Cold" is creative, but have to go w/ Young MC.

"Bust a Move" came on the radio the other night and it was like a long lost stepchild. I still knew all the words! Even my roommate knew some, and he listens to classic rock!

I think "Bust a Move" was the moment at which the US in general noticed that rapping had become really fluid and impressive and amazing. Obviously it helped, public-wise, that Young MC seemed friendly and unassuming and was going on about non-threatening comedic topics -- all this left the spotlight on the fact that he was just verbally impressive.

Tough one, but I'm gonna have to say "Bust a Move", simply for the fact that Flea and John Frusciante of RHCP played bass and guitar on it. :D

Well, and also 'cause it's funky as fuck.

Are you sure that's "Hot Blooded" in "FCM"? Sounds like Kiss' "Christine Sixteen" to me

Blount, as a near obesessive DBs fan, I'd love to see your top 5 list. Especially one that apparently won't include 'Shake Your Rump' or 'Car Thief'.

"Bust a Move", obv.
