TRUE OR FALSE.

and thus do all of the recent events of ilm converge on one thread. or not.

jess, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i felt this deserved its own thread since, you know, most people don't read lord custos threads.

jess, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i somewhat misquoted mark, but the basic point stands. (pointless/inconsequential = NOT the same, but same in my heart.)

jess, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(bah wot abt my tracy island thread

no one really reads mark s posts (except jess obv) (aw), Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

velvets effect = richman & the modern lovers, ducks deluxe, bowie, glam, "I Feel Love", television & voidoids (pre pistols!), patti smith, mott the hoople, iggy & the stooges.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jess s ("the extra S stands for would make a play for mark but is Scared of beyo, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

False. To further defend: Electric Eels, Rockets from the Tombs, even KISS..

Dave225, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

''bowie, glam''

Explain?

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bowie was an acknowledged velvets diciple, no?

(btw julio, the "velvets effect" was a term coined by brian eno that "no one heard their records but everyone who did formed a band blah blah." basically this means that all art rock stems from the velvets which is both a. somewhat true, b. not true at all, c. very hard to prove either way, d. a cheap and easy out for "rock critics like us." [c. 2002 big dapper.])

jess, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Venus in Furs = first glam-rock song. Lady Godiva was the 2nd, and Stephanie Says was the third.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bowie liked the velvets but can you honestly hear their influence (don't mark s! just don't do anything! go and have a lie down NOW!) on Bowie/glam.

''Venus in Furs = first glam-rock song.''

If only glam was as good as this!

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It WAS Julio, it WAS! Best glam album = Lou Reed's Berlin.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

even KISS.
NY Dolls

cuba libre (nathalie), Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So that "Only 10,000 people bought that Velvets album but they all started bands" theory was started by Eno? Damn, I just called him a boring rock critic.
Bowie has indeed covered "Waiting For The Man" in concert circa his Ziggy Stardust days. He does it pretty well, IMO, while still making it sound both like a VU song and a Bowie song.
More influenced affected bands: Sonic Youth, Wire (probably), Probably at least a few of those Elephant 6 kids. (Oh yeah, and TEH STROAKS (cough) or not, who cares)

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mitch Ryder!

And "Queen Bitch" is so Velvets Bowie credits them on the back cover of Hunky Dory. He should have thanked Jackie Curtis, actually.

Arthur, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I believe "Queen Bitch" is about Lou Reed.

Dave225, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You could add Can to the VU followers, though its even more interesting to replace Can with VU in the original statement.

Can were largely pointless until XXXXX did YYYY Dunno what to put for X or Y though

Alexander Blair, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Public Image Ltd.? Oh, and this brings us all back to the whole John Lydon connection. Rad.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can were largely pointless until XXXXX did YYYY Dunno what to put for X or Y though
X= The Fall
Y= I Am Damo Suzuki

(just kidding - here's some salt to take with it.)

Dave225, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pointless is a misleading word, cz it implies teleology (whig theory of pop heh); inconsequential was what i said, meaning w/o consequence

almost everyone discussed upthread had turned OF THEIR OWN ACCORD away from everyday vu-ism by 1976 (inc even ubu), and it was always only ever mixed in with other stuff, lost among traces of the stones the beatles the yardbirds yada yada; lydon et al made a space in which consequences OF THAT LONE SPECIFIC ELEMENT suddenly seemed possible, and ppl went back to look in a new way at everyday vu-ism, as mainfest in all these secondary ways

the electric eels aren't even consequential now, not yet

mark s, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jess, Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(wrong thread jess, that's indie guilt!)

cuba libre (nathalie), Thursday, 30 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The only Sonic Youth stuff that sounds VU-ish to me is from the last 3 Geffen albums and even then it doesn't really come off as a primary influence. "Small Flowers Crack Concrete" is probably their most VU- ish song and it sucks.
