i'll admit i like 'em. all their singles since about '99 or so have been melodic and fun and 'n2gether now' is one of the top ten greatest things i have ever heard on trl. they expose their fans to better music and are a trendsetter for various interesting things in popular music. recently, i liked 'rollin' better than 'my way' (of course the swizz beatz remix of the former is the best) but both were pretty good. 'my way' sounded like nirvana only actually good, like with propulsion and bombast and personality. they're the best rock band getting major play on mtv since rage against the machine broke up.

I just listened to the much-blogged-about "Gifted" (feat. Kanye West, Lykke Li and Santogold) and can confirm that it's stupid.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 13 December 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)

I'm shocked that none of you ringtone cru dudes are gonna come to the defense of Def Jux engineer/Presence rapper/Uncommon Records CEO NASA who totally got his name jacked from under him for this dumb neon shit.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 13 December 2008 03:17 (seventeen years ago)

Also how did these fucking jokers Squeak E Clean and DJ Zegon get so many famous people to come help them out. I know Squeak E Clean was putting out shitty rap records on Dim Mak that were universally ignored four years ago which means he's prolly pals with Aoki and probablu some bullshit DJista in LA or something

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 13 December 2008 03:21 (seventeen years ago)

also post in before ringtone crew calls me King Hipster or something for actually knowing the names of things instead of being all art of pretend forgetfulness.

he's Spike Jonze's brother.

BLAP BLAP (Roberto Spiralli) (sic), Saturday, 13 December 2008 04:01 (seventeen years ago)

Hmmm, even so, I can't imagine that modicum of nepotistic goodness got him a major label deal and every famous person on the planet to rep for him.

There's clearly something else at work here because I simply cannot fathom a major label, in this economic climate, spending the money to get the biggest music star on the planet (Kanye West) to appear on a record from some untested new artist, not to mention Tom Waits (who barely leaves his house), the exclusive rights to unused ODB vocal tracks, increasingly famous hot commodities MIA and Santogold, and a shit ton of famous rappers.

Dude either has a) some kind of cred that I don't know about that makes these artists want to work with HIM, or b) is funding it himself with the millions of dollars that Spike made off Jackass DVD sales. Still doesnt account for why they got signed.

big lol @ their myspace page's "indie-tribal" logo

sam york, Sunday, 14 December 2008 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

maybe he recorded cameos from "the most people famous people on the planet" (rilly a bunch of rappers who like $$$ - you may have heard of the spiegel family - and exactly the kind of musicians who would roll with Spike Jonze's music-inclined brother - they've collabo'd on ads) before he got signed.

da croupier, Sunday, 14 December 2008 06:54 (seventeen years ago)

Heading west from his hometown of NY, Sam Spiegel (aka Squeak E. Clean) began DJ'ing clubs and events around Los Angeles. His signature party, Suds, is an annual gathering he hosts at unconventional venues (previous locations include a laundrymat and a car wash). Sam has spun at award shows, clubs, premieres, parties, and fashion shows in countries such as Japan, Brazil, Morocco, Canada, Australia, and England.

In addition, Spiegel scored and compiled the soundtrack for Spike Jonze's cult classic "Yeah Right!" (the top-selling skate movie of all-time) as well as the skateboarding movie classic "Hot Chocolate." His film composing credits also include the Korean anime "Sky Blue" and the HBO documentary "Pretty Things," and his music has been featured in "The Boys & Girls Guide To Getting Down" and "Human Nature" as well as the snowboard movies "City. Park City." and Warren Miller's "Off The Grid."

Sam is also well known in the advertising world, having scored spots for brands such as Nike, Adidas, Levi's, ESPN, Virgin Mobile, eBay, Toyota, Jose Cuervo, Saturn, Wendy's, and Honda while working with directors like Mark Romanek, Tarsem Singh, the Malloy Brothers, and Spike Jonze. In particular, the song "Hello Tomorrow" (written and produced by Squeak E. Clean and featuring Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and featured in an Adidas commercial directed by Jonze, won the Gold Lion for Best Music at the 2005 Cannes International Advertising Festival and Silver for Original Music at the 2006 Clio Awards.

While Spiegel has produced and remixed tracks for Maroon 5, Iggy Pop, Kylie Minogue, The Eels, Ben Lee, The Cardigans, Swollen Members, Fatlip, The Bumblebeez, and more, 2006 saw the release of the first major label album fully produced by Squeak E. Clean. Show Your Bones, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs sophomore record, was named "Album of the Year" by the likes of Rolling Stone, NME, and Spin, and was nominated for a Grammy for best alternative album. However, Sam already has turned his focus to completing his longtime NASA project (North America/South America). The album is a Brazilian-inspired hip hop collaboration with DJ Zegon featuring KRS-One, Karen O, Del the Funky Homosapien, David Byrne, Fatlip, Tom Waits, RZA, Rakim, Chali 2na, M.I.A., Spank Rock, De La Soul, Method Man, and the last recorded track from the late Ol' Dirty Bastard to name a few.

2007 will likely see not just the release of the NASA album but several other top-secret projects in the works. Furthermore, Sam's company Squeak E. Clean Productions continues to score films, do music and sound for commercials, and produce and remix tracks, many of which can be found on iTunes. While he now has a team of producers and composers working for him Spiegel continues to be actively involved in all aspects of the business. When not in his studio, Sam can be found either at the nearest sushi joint, basketball court, or on the slopes snowboarding.
