inspired by sterling on one of the goddamn irony threads: what recent pop is "light" or "inconsequential" enough to be forgotten by 2004, but is really great great great(!)?

taking sides: nuggets vs. am gold of the future.

(notice in both cases that neither feature the "big" or "important" artists of their eras yet one is flogged by everyone as the "true story of the 60s" and the other probably sells more copies every year than any one record by the byrds.)

(that should be: all the byrds records, natch.)

Dream - "This Is Me"

Jessica Simpson - "I Think I'm In Love With You" (am I still the only person who loved this?)

Mandy Moore - "Candy"

All these were minor hits over here, maybe they were bigger in the States but then the thing about the original Nuggets is that so many of them were Top 40 pop.

Christina Milian?

There's some really really good post-Britney/(other)Christina/Mandy French stuff around at the moment, which I wish I could remember the names of. They're only hits in Francophone regions obv., but still count!

I'm surprised De/Vision's Heart Shaped Tumor only hit the charts in Germany. It's a fantastic Depeche Mode soundalike track that works in all its gloompop glory. Even better than the stuff DM is releasing themselves these days, actually.

And I'm still baffled why Miss Kittin's Rippin Kittin never made it to the charts. Whenever I play this in public, people love it! And why not Twin A New Day?

Ooh! speaking of Germany -- ATC's "Around The World"!
