like Nebraska run through autotune or Digital Ash in a Digital Urn without the whole connor oberst thing

I'm looking for stuff that's dark and maybe has elements of "futuristic sounding" digital trickery but is still kinda folksy

I'm writing a loosely rural sci-fi if that helps at all

HOOS wearing bitchmade sweaters and steendriving (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Sunday, 14 December 2008 08:19 (seventeen years ago)

things that are like "packt like sardines in a crushd tin box" will do as well

lonely futuresounds

HOOS wearing bitchmade sweaters and steendriving (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Sunday, 14 December 2008 08:23 (seventeen years ago)

Only heard it once, but the last record (I think) by indie bluegrass act the Bad Livers had techno elements.

dad a, Sunday, 14 December 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

boduf songs? i think they fit the brief, but i really hated their album and sold it.

I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE - I THUMB THROUGH YOUR MAGAZINES (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 14 December 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

shiitake maki (La Lechera), Sunday, 14 December 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

I would also like to hear some stuff like this.

Take You Down (I know, right?), Sunday, 14 December 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

"poppies (for mr. allerton)" & "god is alive, magic is afoot" - buffy sainte-marie
"trashing days" - the notwist
"parallelograms" - linda perhacs
"peach heart" - serafina steer

Turangalila, Sunday, 14 December 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

Turangalila, Sunday, 14 December 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

"Ash in the Rainbow" - Haco & Hiromichi Sakamoto

Turangalila, Sunday, 14 December 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

I'll second the Linda Perhacs
Souled American - Flubber, Fe, Around The Horn, Notes Campfire
Thin White Rope - many of their rekkids - Sack full of silver and Moonhead comes to mind

BlackIronPrison, Sunday, 14 December 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

American Flag by Cat Power (and the rest of that album)

caek, Sunday, 14 December 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

What about the album Ghostyhead by Rickie Lee Jones?

Home made ectoplasm (I am using your worlds), Sunday, 14 December 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

I don't really feel Gravenhurst, but this is exackly the furrow he plows.

Me and Ruth Lorenzo, Rollin' in the Benzo (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 14 December 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

thanks guys, i'll have lots of downloading to do when i get home this afternoon.

HOOS wearing bitchmade sweaters and steendriving (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Sunday, 14 December 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

Oh and duh Califone who I do feel very much.

Me and Ruth Lorenzo, Rollin' in the Benzo (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 14 December 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

Anything by Grandaddy, especially The Sophtware Slump

The Elected: Me First, especially the song "Go On"

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 14 December 2008 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

Selected Bon Iver tracks do this, when he manipulates the voice. Also Bibio, esp. the one about to come out, which has more vocals.

Mark, Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:03 (seventeen years ago)

Some Capitol K songs are like this, when Kristian uses an acoustic guitar. Like "Anon" off Island Row.

Gino-Vanellyville (Mackro Mackro), Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't see the "folk" part. Yeah, Hoos, you should run through the Capitol K catalog, including the latest one from this year.

Gino-Vanellyville (Mackro Mackro), Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

i remember Hood sounding kind of like this. The description "dark, glitchy folk/country" makes me think Drag City/post-rock in general though i can't think of anything specific. you should try "laughing stock" by talk talk if you haven't already.

Matt P, Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

"you have cum in your hair and your dick is hanging out" by palace bros./will oldham

conceptually it's kinda like Pole (glitchy drum machine) but you know... with a title like that how can it dissapoint?

Dredd Foole - Daze On The Mounts

have u ever seen a 77 with a butterfly door (Curt1s Stephens), Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

the first calla album maybe?

ǝɟɟɐzǝɟ (☪), Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

i downloaded calexico's the black light which is almost there but a little too coy and bright

so i said let me HOOS the beats and steen (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

and not glitchy enough

so i said let me HOOS the beats and steen (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

but definitely has the otherworldly earthy vibe going

so i said let me HOOS the beats and steen (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

in that case try the acorn's album pink ghosts

Lamp, Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

Lamp, Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

10000 maniacs 'hope chest', more out than you would expect, i think there have been threads on it before. somewhere.

keythkeyth, Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

Hosono's side project "World Standard" might be up your alley. People with real glitch/programming chops don't also tend to be great songwriters, and people who are great songwriters often necessarily equipped to realize "glitch" per se, so maybe this is a hard area to quantify.

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

oops missing "arent" in that last clause obv.

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Sunday, 14 December 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

also maybe authentic celestial music by the dirty three?? someone above mentioned califone - heron king blues has this but its more textured than glitchy, i think.

Lamp, Sunday, 14 December 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

Benoît Pioulard

arghkaybee, Sunday, 14 December 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

alright dudes i'm working my way down from the top of the thread and thus far cat power's "moon pix" is perrrfect

so i said let me HOOS the beats and steen (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 15 December 2008 02:38 (seventeen years ago)

caek thx for cp rec its pretty much exactly what i had in mind!

nv i will be sampling gravenhurst and califone soon will get back to you

The Pink Ghosts (feat. music by The Acorn)

derelict, Monday, 15 December 2008 03:27 (seventeen years ago)

friend of mine from portland, Dragging an Ox Through Water fits your description perfectly hoos.

http://dragginganox.blogspot.com/2008/09/main-songs-to-hear.html

Clay, Monday, 15 December 2008 03:33 (seventeen years ago)

using a liberal definition of country (most of these are german and probably too glitch or "out" based on reading the thread but what the hell)

to rococo rot and i sound - music is a hungry ghost and the amateur view
ekkehard ehlers - a life without fear
gudrun gut - i put a record on
mindless boogie - dolly (cosmic rmx/edit of dolly parton's "jolene", best/most creepy pitched way down)

tricky, Monday, 15 December 2008 04:55 (seventeen years ago)

alright dudes i'm working my way down from the top of the thread and thus far cat power's "moon pix" is perrrfect

love moon pix :) you should hear her earlier stuff too, it's more upset? dirty three were on moon pix, or at least mick turner (the guitarist). someone mentioned dirty three upthread, <3 ocean songs.

Matt P, Monday, 15 December 2008 10:18 (seventeen years ago)

You need to get yourself some Tunng guys.

the next grozart, Monday, 15 December 2008 10:21 (seventeen years ago)

it seems like you are perfectly describing califone. i also second the ekkehard ehlers. and dirty three is great but there's nothing too glitchy about them.

how about 'the civil war' by matmos? or john fahey's 'womblife' (produced by jim o'rourke)?

psychgawsple, Monday, 15 December 2008 10:47 (seventeen years ago)

nothing glitchy about moon pix either. the glitch is in the snatch. 'womblife' kind of blows.

Matt P, Monday, 15 December 2008 10:52 (seventeen years ago)

seconding tunng, also try the accidental, though it may not be dark enough

Minister for Compression Issues (electricsound), Monday, 15 December 2008 10:53 (seventeen years ago)

annnnnd i give up on this thread. enjoy the moon pix revelations!

psychgawsple, Monday, 15 December 2008 10:59 (seventeen years ago)

Please to check out Autistic Daughters last record Uneasy Flowers.

Tracks can be found here: http://www.myspace.com/autisticdaughters

I couldn't think of a more apt record for the thread title and it/they (imh) honestly deserve much more attention.

MaresNest, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but I'm listening to FOG a lot.

u s steel, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

oh oh oh! this dude i know made a glitchy country ep using instruments of his own invention, pretty sweet: http://www.owenlake.com/

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 15 December 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

Is this sci-fi in America (I assume from your influences that it is)?

u s steel, Monday, 15 December 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

(four tracks streaming at that site btw, good stuff)

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Monday, 15 December 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

total mormon cockblock extravaganza (jaymc), Monday, 15 December 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

Just buy a really scratchy Skip James record folks.

NickB, Monday, 15 December 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

drqagging an ox through water was the first thing that came to mind when i saw this thread

uptown churl, Monday, 15 December 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)

DRAGGING AN OX THROUGH WATER that is. doesnt he have something new out too? i might as well rep another pdx act, grouper, which is more droney than glitchy but you should still check her out

uptown churl, Monday, 15 December 2008 18:32 (seventeen years ago)

the new thomas brinkmann might fit the bill.

three months pass...

Any more Ideas? I'm looking for something more dancefloor oriented. Basically does anyone know anything like Metric of of Orchestra of Bubbles, but with banjoes instead of Cellos? That is exactly what I'm trying to find basically.

Plaxico (I know, right?), Saturday, 21 March 2009 11:10 (sixteen years ago)

Or like Waiworinao but with folk guitar instead of spanish. Or like For the Trees with a 4x4

Plaxico (I know, right?), Saturday, 21 March 2009 11:18 (sixteen years ago)

Country techno

mehlt, Sunday, 22 March 2009 00:55 (sixteen years ago)
